People would just do that, but an app can harvest soooo much more telemetry data. Business executives will claim the app provides a "richer experience," by which they mean they'll experience getting richer by harvesting more customer data to sell.

Tax evasion.

It's always the people you most suspect.

Not the most ragged lookin' ship I've ever seen, but for a representative of the world's most expensive Navy she's looking absolutely shabby.

How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now...

I wonder what it's like to be Ed Sheeran. Is there any air gap at all between Ed-Sheeran-the-brand and Ed-Sheeran-the-human? Does Ed Sheeran even exist as a human anymore, separate from the brand?

The brand clearly thinks it'll make more money by not taking any strong position on an active genocide. Makes sense for a brand, it's a corporate construct that's fundamentally amoral. It can only value profit.

What I'm wondering is what happened to the human? It existed at one point, before the brand did. Does it still exist? Does it share the same profit motive as the brand of the same name? Can it feel shame anymore? I hope it does.

I bet they used to like Rage Against The Machine before they got all political.

This Cisco field notice has diagrams for the curious.

Not sure about Teams, but for Zoom you're only first locally. Everyone else sees themselves first in their local client. The ordering of participants in Zoom meetings is documented here. There's a whole bunch of logic behind the scenes; muted vs. unmuted, whether the participant called in, etc.

The problem with making S3 config the default is that it would add friction for new admins. If you're just starting to play around with self-hosting Lemmy then it's 100% certain you have a local disk but not nearly as likely that you've got an S3 bucket ready to go. Making S3 the default would force those new admins to either tweak their configs or figure out how to get an S3 bucket before they could get going. Using local disk for images is fine for smaller instances and self-hosts, but for cost and scaling reasons having an option to switch to S3 is really valuable for larger instance like lemmy.world. Only the top 10-20% of instances are likely to really need to make the switch to S3, so Pictrs defaulting to local disk makes sense I think.

The original self-checkout!

I thought they were banana slices. Kiwi would be even more cursed, which I didn't think was possible. Either way, kind of it to warn us of the danger it poses! Biohazard symbols might be more appropriate though.
