Do you participate in this hobby without a formal IT education or a career in a similar field?

Does anyone else here participate in the selfhosting hobby without a formal IT related education or a career in a similar field? I've only had one or two programming courses as part of my university education, but it was only very basic Python and C. I've never formally learned how to use containers, version control or anything else. Sometimes I regret not pursuing an education in IT/programming because there are so many things I'd like to accomplish but can't (for example if there's a feature missing in some project, or to feel safe in my abilities to harden my servers and my network in order to expose services to the open internet).

Why does github:sodiboo/niri-flake exist?

I'm a relatively new user and I've successfully set up Hyprland with home manager. I wanted to try out Niri though but it's a bit more confusing for me. What's the point of that repo? Does the Niri that's in nixpkgs not work with home manager? Is that repo, and that repo alone, expected if you're using home manager and want to manage Niri with it?

Thanks!

What used Thinkpad should I aim to get now in 2026 for 200€ or less?

I'm going to use Linux on it (probably NixOS with a Wayland compositor like Hyprland or Niri), it will mainly be used as a social media and surfing machine, intended to replace my phone for something that's more private and FOSS. So it will go down in my bag to be used on the bus, at work, etc. It will be used in my bed and in my couch. I won't be gaming on it, but I'd like to stream media from my Jellyfin server. I will then relegate my phone to be used only as a phone and for proprietary banking apps that I can't avoid.

For reference I am in Sweden, and I'll probably use something like Tradera. But if there's any refurbished options within the EU that you can vouch for that'd be cool as well.

To give some examples of what I've found:

T450S with a i7-5600U and 12 GB RAM for 2000 SEK ≈ 180 EUR.

L430 for 600 SEK ≈ 54 EUR.

X280 for 3215 SEK ≈ 293 EUR (above my budget, just wanted to include it for pricing reference).

ThinkPad X270 i5-6300U 12, 8GB, 256SSD for 2306 SEK ≈ 210 EUR.

I've never really used a laptop before, I've always used a desktop, so I'm unfamiliar with what to look out for, how much stuff is worth, etc. I don't want to be ripped off.

Thanks so much for any help!

E2EE cloud storage providers with FOSS clients?

It doesn't seem to exist. I'd like a solution to upload and sync my photos and my KeePass database, but I'm really hesitant to upload personal photos unencrypted to services exposed to the internet. Unfortunately self-hosting a Nextcloud instance on my LAN isn't possible at this moment, but maybe a VPS with a strict firewall and a mesh VPN like Tailscale or Netbird? But honestly I'd rather just pay someone for the trouble.

What do you suggest? Clients need to be FOSS and available on Linux and Android, and on Android they need to be available on F-Droid (thus no proprietary blobs or libraries from Google).

Are there any truly FOSS email providers?

Tuta and Proton, which are both commonly recommended, have not released their back-end code (read about it here and here). Proton doesn't seem interested in open sourcing their code, and Tuta has claimed they're aiming to do it in the future (the claim was made years ago and nothing has happened yet). They also both claim to be open source in their marketing.

Is there any alternative that is fully FOSS?

Looking for new headphones, closed back with detachable cable in a standard format

I used to use a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80 Ω, at first they were awful because the treble hurt my ears but I got used to it in a few weeks and I had them for years until they broke. Then I bought a pair of Sennheiser HD 599. They were alright, but they've started falling apart now too

So what should I go for next? I've been looking at the DT 770 Pro X which ticks most of my boxes. Can they be run through an amp? They're only 48 Ω.

Can you recommend anything else? Sheepskin pads would be cool, but that's not a requirement. I primarily use it for movies, music, gaming and VoIP. Budget is around 300€.

Thanks!

Niri + DMS on a custom atomic image based on Fedora Kinoite

I really like the declarative paradigm of NixOS, but the way I use my computer often actively go against this paradigm. Next I found out about atomic distributions such as Fedora Kinoite and Aurora, and I really liked those too except for the fact that I had to layer so many packages which sort of defeated the purpose of using their images (not everything can or should be run in distrobox containers). This past day I've been setting up a custom image using the ublue-os image template and I'm surprised by how easy it was to get going. The only negative part is having to use GitHub, which I would prefer to avoid.

I just wanted to make this post to highlight how easy it is to customize atomic distributions (assuming you want to use atomic distributions in the first place, traditional distributions are of course easier to customize). If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Reddit has successfully driven me away

I can't get rid of it, it's obnoxious. I've tried filtering the element with my adblocker but it keeps reappearing. As much as I find Reddit useful (unfortunately), especially for information and discussion relating to my country, I will never install their proprietary garbage app on my phone just to use their website.

Oh well. I've used the Internet before Reddit existed, I'm sure I can get used to doing so again.
