Mastodon has went through a similar bump, but more recently has had some larger figures begin usage (local government broadcasts, b-level 'thought-leaders'/'influencers', etc). In order to get to the next level, lemmy needs to show it can survive test of time and is worth the effort to establish an online profile. For example, reddit has corporate organizations creating and maintaining subreddits which act as an avenue for community engagement. Having active community engagement leads to advertisement, which can be a double edged sword, but useful if pursuing 'growth' metrics. I'm not sure what the lemmy devs (or it's users) have planned for this.

Framework vs Macbook laptop?
Reply in thread
Not for the MacBook, it's soldered in. So he will have to upgrade the whole thing. The M1 is one of the best laptops I've used (for work), but you have to choose the right specs at the beginning, otherwise you will be in a pickle.

A genre of Country Music...
I'd call the genre cowboy bebop, but wouldn't want to insult the show

Sizing up Baldur's Gate 3's success, Warhammer 40k CRPG lead says "almost no developer has the same resources"
Is Larian considered a massive studio? On Wikipedia is says Larian is 450 people and on LinkedIn it says Owlcat is 201. I assume that Larian didn't have everyone working on BG3 given their other efforts, so isn't the total headcount not that far apart?

Musk's interference to protect Russia allowed Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities, and resulted in the deaths of civilians including children - Zelensky advisor.
Do we know what the details of the DoD contract outlined in terms of services provided? Musk seems to be retorting that the service was never meant to escalate conflict in the war, but I'd be curious what is actually on paper.

The US has so much space
I know lots of euro bros are showing how long their country is, but I think the point is that Texas is a state, not country. When you compare those things it's quite impressive, however still not even the largest state in the world. Here are some others. A nice drive from Anchorage to Prudhoe Bay will cost you 17 hours, or in Amazonas, Brazil, Manaus to Cruzeiro do Sul is 33 hours.
To the guy who annexed Arizona into California in order to beat Texas, shame.

Foreign student arrested in Norway on suspicion of espionage including electronic eavesdropping
I wonder what tipped authorities off that there was some form of spectrum surveillance. AFAIK you don't need a license or government approval to receive RF spectral data in almost all countries. I wonder if the actor was also transmitting as well.

Teams apparently can't call when using Firefox
I works for me without a user agent change if I enter through the Microsoft 365 teams workspace and not a teams share link.

San Francisco homeless sweep was cheered on by the right. It was also illegal
While I agree we should be solving the root problem of homelessness equitably, the headline is misleading as I know many people on the left were also happy to have clean streets for a while.

Columbia University community 'shattered' after police raid

Yes, anti-BDS laws. These were passed years ago (not reactionary to now). There are state and federal rules but in general, a university can't boycott or divest from Israeli (or many other nations) in political protest or it loses funding.
I think this is why we see most universities have their hands tied.

Paris aims to drive out large SUVs by increasing parking fees
I understand something like a GMC Suburban or a Cadillac Escalade, but the Porsche Macan (in article thumbnail) and many other compact SUVs take up the same curb space and about the same weight and length as a standard sedan.
vs
Unless they put weighted meters at every parking space, would be interesting to see how they enforce this. Compact-SUVs are useful and are well equipped for their weight (AWD, safety features, space-efficient).
Here is a cool chart showing weight vs road wear. Not sure how scientific it is, but shows cars around 4000lbs are considered normal wear.
Unless the goal is to move drivers to the subcompact-sedan form factor.
Then they could make low cost parking spaces ~170" long and any cars that do not fit in that would have to go in the bigger spaces with a higher rate. Very curious how they would implement it without costing the tax payer too much.

They're such great investors!
It's also harder to invest with the amount of funds that Berkshire Hathaway has. The slippage must be a difficult task to manage. Also, they have to make more than 20% because they have to payout the employees and guarantee growth for the investors.

A real river of wine was formed in the Portuguese town of Anadia. It was there that two tanks of wine burst at the local distillery.
Would love to see some before and after photos of the street now permanently dyed red 🤣

Pfizer says it will price Covid treatment Paxlovid at nearly $1,400 for a five-day course, which researchers estimate only costs Pfizer $13 to produce. That's a 10,000%+ markup. Shameful.
Isn't Pfizer going to offer Paxlovid free of charge till 2028 if your uninsured or underinsured?
Who would be the people affected by this?

Not disagreeing with you, but Norway is the way it is because it sells oil and it has been enough revenue over the years to provide for it's citizens. Many countries can't follow this model.

I don't think it's the wrong question. Profits exists in every society and many countries are capitalist or have their own flavor of capitalism. If the idea is to create a system where those who excel are rewarded, then profits need and should exist. In a capitalist economy, this drives better products, better services, etc. Additionally, the opposite of profit (loss), serves as a great metric to determine whether something is worth doing. If the customer wants a pure gold toilet, but only has $50 to spend, your going to offer them spray paint instead of the real thing.
There are some bad apples that abuse profits, and disproportionately hoard all the value, but I'm looking to discuss my original question.
