Mastodon has went through a similar bump, but more recently has had some larger figures begin usage (local government broadcasts, b-level 'thought-leaders'/'influencers', etc). In order to get to the next level, lemmy needs to show it can survive test of time and is worth the effort to establish an online profile. For example, reddit has corporate organizations creating and maintaining subreddits which act as an avenue for community engagement. Having active community engagement leads to advertisement, which can be a double edged sword, but useful if pursuing 'growth' metrics. I'm not sure what the lemmy devs (or it's users) have planned for this.

Framework vs Macbook laptop?

Reply in thread

Not for the MacBook, it's soldered in. So he will have to upgrade the whole thing. The M1 is one of the best laptops I've used (for work), but you have to choose the right specs at the beginning, otherwise you will be in a pickle.

The US has so much space

I know lots of euro bros are showing how long their country is, but I think the point is that Texas is a state, not country. When you compare those things it's quite impressive, however still not even the largest state in the world. Here are some others. A nice drive from Anchorage to Prudhoe Bay will cost you 17 hours, or in Amazonas, Brazil, Manaus to Cruzeiro do Sul is 33 hours.

To the guy who annexed Arizona into California in order to beat Texas, shame.

Paris aims to drive out large SUVs by increasing parking fees

I understand something like a GMC Suburban or a Cadillac Escalade, but the Porsche Macan (in article thumbnail) and many other compact SUVs take up the same curb space and about the same weight and length as a standard sedan.

  • Porsche Macan (SUV): 4400lbs, 186.1"
  • Honda CRV (SUV): 3285lbs, 184.8"
  • Audi A4 (sedan): 3700lbs, 187.5"
  • Pegeout 508 (sedan): 3290lbs, 187"

vs

  • Cadillac Escalade (SUV): 6200lbs, 211"
  • Range Rover (SUV): 6025lbs, 207"

Unless they put weighted meters at every parking space, would be interesting to see how they enforce this. Compact-SUVs are useful and are well equipped for their weight (AWD, safety features, space-efficient).

Here is a cool chart showing weight vs road wear. Not sure how scientific it is, but shows cars around 4000lbs are considered normal wear.

Unless the goal is to move drivers to the subcompact-sedan form factor.

  • Mini Cooper: 3144lbs, 159.1"
  • Citreon C3: 2226lbs, 156.7"

Then they could make low cost parking spaces ~170" long and any cars that do not fit in that would have to go in the bigger spaces with a higher rate. Very curious how they would implement it without costing the tax payer too much.

Uber, Grubhub and DoorDash must pay NYC delivery workers an $18 minimum wage

I don't think it's the wrong question. Profits exists in every society and many countries are capitalist or have their own flavor of capitalism. If the idea is to create a system where those who excel are rewarded, then profits need and should exist. In a capitalist economy, this drives better products, better services, etc. Additionally, the opposite of profit (loss), serves as a great metric to determine whether something is worth doing. If the customer wants a pure gold toilet, but only has $50 to spend, your going to offer them spray paint instead of the real thing.

There are some bad apples that abuse profits, and disproportionately hoard all the value, but I'm looking to discuss my original question.
