Hakeem Jeffries meeting with Jared Kushner sparks backlash amongst Democrats ahead of midterm elections – US politics live

Reply in thread

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are still learning about this topic, instead of a troll. Jared Kushner does not hold a government position. He serves as an outside adviser and informal envoy, assisting with foreign policy and negotiations without holding a formal cabinet position. Jeffries talking to Kushner has nothing to do with wanting or having a functional government. Any influence Kushner has in the world is through his association with the Trump brand and his/Trump's money.

After leaving the White House, Jared Kushner started a private equity firm named Affinity Partners. The Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia invested $2 billion into this firm. Kushner's firm has collected over $110 million in management fees from the Saudi government and other Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds, even before producing major investment profits for them.

So, if Kushner is unofficially advising Trump/The white house, this really looks like Saudi Arabia is bribing Kushner for access via a bullshit investment into Kushner's company. Furthermore, Iran is not on good terms with Saudi Arabia. So if you're thinking Jeffries is using Kushner's relationship with the Saudis to leverage ceasefire with Iran. That's the least likely outcome. The Saudi's would rather we keep up the conflict with Iran.

Kushner, (and Trump,) are corrupt as fuck. Nothing good will come of Jeffries talking with Kushner. There are other avenues for Jeffries to speak with the president and participate in foreign policy. This just makes Jeffries look super corrupt and complicit with the trump administration.

But Jefferies won his primary, he has the mandate of his district.

The only reason why he won his primary is because the person running against him didn't get financial support from DSA the way other candidates did. The DSA thought it would be too costly to try and oust Jefferies, so they focused on other primaries that were more winnable. If anything, this might piss off enough democrats in his district that they vote against him for a republican, or just don't vote period. I honestly think that this will be one of the nails in the coffin of Jefferies political career.

Statement by PM Carney on Canada-US trade negotiations

Our government understood, before many, that America is altering all its trade relationships. Putting tariffs on its closest allies and charging for access to its vast market.

I'm not sure how vast American markets will be as we become more and more impoverished with each generation, but go off king.

In recent weeks, we made important progress toward improving Canada’s position as having the best deal in the world with the U.S. However, that progress has not been enough to meet our objectives for Canadians. As a result, this evening, I have decided to suspend trade negotiations with the U.S. and have directed Canada’s negotiators to return to Ottawa. They have worked hard, in good faith, to defend the interests of Canadians throughout these negotiations up until the very last minute. However, last-minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal.

No cap. Go on.

At midnight tonight, the U.S. intends to impose a 50% tariff on roughly $28 billion of Canadian goods. Canada will match those tariffs dollar for dollar to protect our workers and businesses. In the coming days, the government will introduce additional measures to support Canadian workers and businesses, building on the nearly $25 billion in support provided over the past 18 months.

Canada! FUCK YEAH. Coming again to save the motherfucking day yeah! As an American, it gives me hope to see other countries refusing to play ball with Trump. I'm happy for you Canada.

I had a pretty sweet bike with presta valves I built myself. GT frame with amazing manitou front shocks, carbon fiber handlebars, aluminum rims, seat post, top tier derailleur, shifters and gears.

Bike was stolen from my university while it was liked on a bike rack with a security camera pointed at it. (It was locked with a kryptonite u-lock too.) Obviously school security and the police didn't give a shit. So I called around all the local bike shops and gave them the description, and the numbers stamped on the bottom of the frame. The shop about 5 blocks from my school called me to come pick it up. The thief brought it into the store to get the tires inflated because he couldn't figure out how the presta valves worked.

I loved them before that, because I found they leaked less than schrader valves. After that incident I am presta 4 life.

The works of the roots of the vines, of the trees, must be destroyed to keep up the price, and this is the saddest, bitterest thing of all. Carloads of oranges dumped on the ground. The people came for miles to take the fruit, but this could not be. How would they buy oranges at twenty cents a dozen if they could drive out and pick them up? And men with hoses squirt kerosene on the oranges, and they are angry at the crime, angry at the people who have come to take the fruit. A million people hungry, needing the fruit- and kerosene sprayed over the golden mountains. And the smell of rot fills the country. Burn coffee for fuel in the ships. Burn corn to keep warm, it makes a hot fire. Dump potatoes in the rivers and place guards along the banks to keep the hungry people from fishing them out. Slaughter the pigs and bury them, and let the putrescence drip down into the earth.

There is a crime here that goes beyond denunciation. There is a sorrow here that weeping cannot symbolize. There is a failure here that topples all our success. The fertile earth, the straight tree rows, the sturdy trunks, and the ripe fruit. And children dying of pellagra must die because a profit cannot be taken from an orange. And coroners must fill in the certificate- died of malnutrition- because the food must rot, must be forced to rot. The people come with nets to fish for potatoes in the river, and the guards hold them back; they come in rattling cars to get the dumped oranges, but the kerosene is sprayed. And they stand still and watch the potatoes float by, listen to the screaming pigs being killed in a ditch and covered with quick-lime, watch the mountains of oranges slop down to a putrefying ooze; and in the eyes of the people there is the failure; and in the eyes of the hungry there is a growing wrath. In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage.

I soak my produce in a combination of 1 cup water, with 1 tablespoon vinegar and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Then after that I soak in plain water and drain. Citric acid and acetic acid will both help kill germs and help get lipid soluble chemicals, (pesticides,) off the produce. After that I drain, and place a clean cloth into a bowl to soak up any moisture, then put the produce in the bowl.
