Why is the US currently obsessed with protein?

It turns out the answer is realy very long, but it's a hell of a ride. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K35FtbuyTh4

TLDW:
It's a right-wing grift. The Leftist Cooks argue that carnivore and “protein-maxxing” diets are not about health; they’re tied to masculinity, control, grift, and far-right politics. They use figures like Jordan Peterson and the Liver King to show how restrictive meat-heavy high protein diets can become symbols of power, identity, and pseudo-scientific authority.

The broader argument is food is never just food. Dietary choices can carry cultural meaning, political signaling, and ideological pressure, and that high protein culture is part of a larger ecosystem that can normalize authoritarian, anti-science, and anti-egalitarian thinking.

The video is excellent though. It's basically a miniseries on the various causes and effects of this and it's incredibly well put together, even if it is 6 hours long. 😱

What is the difference between an American liberal and a liberal outside the USA?

It's wild to me that almost everyone seems to be mixing up classical liberalism and neoliberalism to a some significant degree; two wildly different paradigms only related by name. The former is defined by the freedom of the individual, the latter by the freedom of markets. The conflation of the two is wildly good marketing from the neolibs.

Liberal philosophers John Stuart Mill and Harriet Taylor Mill were massive advocates for the abolition of slavery, women's equality, free speach, worker cooperatives, inheritance tax, etc.

The father of neolibrolism Milton Friedman believed in unfettered free markets, minimal government, deregulation and monetarism (influencing the economy through the supply of money)

The current war on science, and who’s behind it

From your title I thought this was about the book "The War on Science" that came out this year, which is definitely right wing propaganda. I guess there are two books with that name though and this is much more in the vain of the earlier better one.

They’ve helpfully characterized “the five principal forces of antiscience “ into alliterative groups: (1) plutocrats and their political action committees, (2) petrostates and their politicians and polluters, (3) fake and venal professionals—physicians and professors, (4) propagandists, especially those with podcasts, and (5) the press. The general tactic is that (1) and (2) hire (3) to generate deceitful and inflammatory talking points, which are then disseminated by all-too-willing members of (4) and (5).

I really appreciate them pointing the finger at podcasters specifically. 😆 Never trust anything you hear on a long rambling podcast presented by one man either talking on his own or interviewing one other person!

Foundation vs Dune

Reply in thread

Or is Dune about the folly of different types of dictatorship; sadistic, benevolent, religious or machiavellian? Taking only the first book (because that's as far as I've read) every leader is thwarted or confined by the consequences or weakness of their own style of leadership.

Poor sleep linked to rising cancer risk in under-50s

Correlation ≠ causation. I would assume that people with underlying health conditions sleep less/worse on average. Some of those health conditions could in some cases cause cancer and in others some could be cancer. Now let me actually read the article and see if they took account of this.

Edit: It has a bunch of caveats at the end quoting someone saying things like i did but with some actually expertise, e.g.

“So if your immune system takes a bit of a hit, then I suppose it would make sense that your risk of some cancers may increase. But it also might be the other way around. It could be that if you have cancer, and it’s not yet clinically obvious, it could be causing some change in how you sleep.”

So don't stay up at night more worring that doing so is causing cancer. There's every chance it isn't and there are just a few unlucky people that are creating the association, because they have some form already.
