the Cure. Even almost half a century into their existence as a band, they release an album that hits hard.

Their early stuff was a bit weak. Thankfully by the time they got there first album together they had found their formula. I mean "killing an Arab" compared to "Hanging Garden" or "a forest". You know which one you're choosing.

Robert was always heartfelt and sincere. Which is why it will always work. I'm just glad he didn't mazzy star himself. Instead coming to terms with a temporary Mass Appeal and just staying true to himself.

The Cure, then Bauhaus, then My life with the thrill kill kult (which is maybe just goth adjacent, but their early stuff fits I think)

Industrial is pretty settled goth territory. They are both descendants of postpunk along with "alternative". Worst case scenario they're close siblings. TKK 100% is "goth" ๐Ÿ˜‰. At least in my circles. They'd laugh at anyone claiming otherwise.

The Damned, 45 Grave, Misfits, and Calabrese. ๐Ÿค˜

All solid and Calabrese is essential in any horror punk playlist.

The Sisters of Mercy (because Fields of the Nephilim ain't in the list).

3

Yeah, I recently started listening to the Sisters' three albums bc I realized I knew a bunch of songs but hadn't heard the albums all the way through. It's good stuff, I think Floodland's the best even tho I know a couple songs are supposed to be kindof a parody.

I'm gonna be honest I really like one specific Depeche Mode album and it's not their first and definitely wasn't their last.

Also, is Goth specifically the music genre or can we include the band's vibe too? The Birthday Massacre has some bangers.

If we really want to be pedantic, most goth things aren't "goth" technically. If they aren't from late 70s Manchester blah blah blah. But that's not a useful or often used definition. Typically when it's used it's with reference to a larger culture. Generally tied back to punk or horror. So horror Punk is absolutely goth Etc. ๐Ÿ˜ As are TBM.

I may be biased. Once had someone pull me aside at a birthday party asking what the "shirt" was about. Only to realize I had worn my TBM shirt that day. I was like, it's a band and that's totally not what I'm plotting. You'll find out about that later. Though for the future I need to find some The Birthday Party merch to wear instead. Or at least Nick Cave. A lot less questions that way.

Lel it took me a while to figure out that referred to "The Birthday Massacre"...

I'm guessing.... Violator? My fave is Some Great Reward, tho Black Celebration is pretty good too. I'm not familiar with a lot of their later stuff, tho Memento Mori was OK.

Ultra and Violator were definitely peak. Vince Clarke days as well. The last decade or so, that I definitely wasn't feeling.

After Violator it got hard to call Depeche goth. But from about Construction Time Again till then, sure

Hadn't heard of zwyntar before. Interesting and another band to add to my Ukrainian list Etc LOL. Deadchovsky on the other hand I'm well familiar with and a solid candidate.

Can share more Ukrainian stuff if you want.

Zwyntar is quite popular today in Ukraine actually, but they made awesome music and shows for years and years without much recognition before they were invited to one popular summer festival and made a lasting impression. Happy for their success, it's well deserved.

Great list! Didn't know about Sexual Purity. Know personally the people from first 3 bands though :)

Btw, Old Cat's Drama guitar Divuar is guitar / male vocalist in Zwyntar.

ะšะฐะดั€ะธะปัŒ recently made an album where he re-recorded their stuff in Ukrainian. Bandcamp

DK Energetyk post punk band that recently went fairly popular, their tracks also were added to Stalker 2.

Zagreb, Sudno, BaWN, SMURNO - haven't seen these folks live but their recordings are great.

Edit1: Dark Folk band Folkulaka absolutely needs to be in the list.

Nice. Honestly I like when they use their native language. I listen to a ton of stuff I don't know the lyrics to. I've listened to She Passed Away for about 10 years. They don't sing in english. I never looked up translated lyrics till this year ๐Ÿ˜›. Good stuff. Was listening to an album by Kitty in a Casket. They do most of their stuff in english, despite being from austria. Kitty does a decent impression of the midwestern accent where I am from. Mid album I heard a song start to repeat, But the lyrics kick in and she's singing in her native language. Instantly my favorite version of the song. Just because of how unique it was,
