Gatekeepers are important to have around

Are you the one then who gatekeeps who is allowed to be a gatekeeper, and whether something is acceptable? An example: I really like the aesthetic of upside-down 5 pointed stars. Is there some sort of meaning and history behind them? Don’t know. Am I allowed to like them? Or should I feel shame for not looking up the symbolism in everything that I like? Do I really need to educate myself on the occult in order to like something that might hold meaning to someone else?

Purity tests for fandoms are gross. No one, save for those who take these things way too seriously, cares about how hardcore you are.

Great unpopular opinion!

Utah House passes transgender bathroom ban

The thing that scares me about these laws being passed is that they serve to embolden those who want to hurt us. MAGA uses this as a hate feedback loop. They are winning. Any anti-LGBT bill that passes is a W for them and a step closer to the edge of society for us. It’s not going to stop.

Traverse City hair salon no longer servicing all LGBTQ members

9&10 News reached out to the owner, Christine Geiger, who said she has no problem with the LGB part, it’s the TQ+ that she doesn’t support. Gieger said she is taking a stand against being forced to use preferred pronouns, such as: they/them, he/him and she/her.

Wow, so brave. They didn’t even spell the idiot politician’s name right. I doubt there will be some sort of backlash or loss of business—it’s TC after all.

Trump Plans to Skip G.O.P. Debate for Interview With Tucker Carlson

Reply in thread

He’d be a hero to his stupid base when he had to have the courage it would take to renege on the pledge, blaming it on a conspiracy against him.

This is because his supporters are amongst the dumbest, most gullible and hateful people in the nation.

They’d much rather watch a video of a doofus asking him questions that had been provided by Trump himself. They don’t have any interest in hearing anything others have to say, just their god man.

One would think it would get boring hearing the same, obviously fictitious, dribble from the same angry man all the time. But again, his supporters are idiots, and it’s an exercise in futility trying to understand them.

Why gay couples using surrogacy are the latest target for Europe's far right

Reply in thread

I agree with you that there needs to be a robust system in place to provide resources and other support for women that feel like surrogacy is one of their only ways to make money. However, the legislation in Italy is targeting LGBTQ families specifically. Right wing/fascist ideology the world over is experiencing a renaissance in support of legislating LGBTQ folk back into the shadows. It’s working, btw.

In Italy, it is already illegal for same-sex couples to adopt. Now they are trying to make surrogacy punishable by jail time, no matter where an Italian citizen goes to do it. Should the government be allowed to tell you that you cannot have a family? If I proposed a law that would effectively outlaw your ability to have a family, would you support that? Is this new law really just to protect women?

How difficult was it for you to abandon a social media website for a fediverse alternative?

I am was an Apollo user, and decided that Reddit killing it was too much. I switched to Lemmy, and while it has been an adjustment, I am reminded of the days of forums past. I dig it. Using Voyager (formally Wefwef) has helped preserve most of the UI of Apollo, which is nice. I had never heard of Progressive Web Apps before, and am super interested in the topic now. This makes me want to pick up programming again, in hopes of eventually being able to contribute to open source projects.

What's your "old person" trait?

Eh, it still works, why get a new one?

This was born of necessity for me. But now that I can afford a new laundry basket, why buy a new one if the old one is all busted? It still holds clothes… This holds even more true with electronics. I hate throwing things away if I am able to fix them, even if fixing a thing is not going to actually save money.

Lemmy, what's the meaning, or point if you prefer, of life? I know 42, but I'm serious. Nothing lasts, everything is meaningless - are we just amusing ourselves until death?

Literally? There is no reason for life. Which scares people, so they develop superstition (theology) or ascribe it to emotions (happiness, suffering, etc). There is no reason, for life. The reason for life existing or how it came to be is certainly up for debate, but there is no why. We are alive, we are conscious. Eventually our bodies give out on us, and our life ends.
