Microsoft admits 8GB RAM is fine for Windows 11, after years of pushing 16GB as the baseline

Really depends on what you’re trying to do. Done a few budget builds for folks who were attached to Windows but don’t multitask.

Someone who keeps their activities limited to one browser tab and one document/spreadsheet can get by just fine on 8GB.

Might seem very restrictive to most of us, especially here on Lemmy, but there are people who live their lives just like this.

Also, bit cheeky of Microsoft to do this right as they’re introducing new Surfaces with 8GB at what used to be the 16GB model’s price point, lol.

The Fall of Reach is being released on Nov 10 as an audio drama featuring Steve Downes, Jen Taylor, Tim Dadabo, and a full cast

I’m the opposite, it really enhances the immersion and clicks for me. With some Audiobooks, dialog is a major challenge when there’s no clarity as to which character is speaking. I don’t have that issue when reading though.

The Harry Potter full-cast audiobooks are greatly enhanced by the sound effects - for example, the screaming paintings in the Black house audible in the background during character dialog

Only if the CPU and motherboard support quad-channel memory, which is usually only found on High End Desktop platforms. Even the high end consumer CPUs you might consider for a new build - like a Ryzen 9 9950X3D or Intel Core Ultra 9 285K - are limited to dual channel.

In Ryzen’s case, the officially supported memory bandwidth is reduced when you populate 4 modules. For the aforementioned 9950X3D, you’re guaranteed support for 5600Mhz with two modules and that drops down to 3600Mhz with four. Whether or not you actually have issues will depend on the properties of the unique CPU you end up with / silicon lottery.

HDMI 2.2 is set to arrive in TVs and monitors next year, bringing uncompressed 4K at ridiculous frame rates — here's what to expect from the next-gen connector, and who it's actually most useful for

There is an important qualifier, though: devices can be HDMI 2.2 certified without delivering the very fastest data speeds, so you'll need to study the spec sheets of any potential purchases.

That’s not going to confuse anyone /s

What’s the point of having a “standard” if it’s really more of a standard…ish?

Sorry Microsoft, Windows 10 taskbar is still better than Windows 11, and here's why

I wonder about the gripe of having to go to settings to make changes to the taskbar. Are there really folks resizing or repositioning their taskbars on a day-to-day basis?

In my case, I haven’t really been bothered by most of the Win11 taskbar gripes. I strip my Taskbar down to be somewhat minimalist, only showing the start menu button and whatever apps are currently open on a given window. It’s something that I set up once after OS install and then never really touch again. The only option I miss is having all system tray icons show all the time - in Windows 11, that can only be manually managed so when an app updates it defaults into the tray’s submenu.

Having the start menu be nothing more than a set if pinned apps and then alphabetical list of everything is great and aligns with how app menus are structured on mobile devices, not that I tend to engage with it much. My engrained habit at this point is to press the windows key, first three letters of the app I want to open, and then enter.

Old games with high GPU requirements (and look great)

What’s your threshold for “old”?

Couple more demanding games / difficult to run at launch that come to mind for me:

Cyberpunk 2077 is about to be 5 years old (2020)

Red Dead Redemption 2’s PC Port is about to be 6 years old (late 2019)

Metro Exodus is coming up on 7 (early 2019)

If this is your first foray into Ray Tracing capable cards, Control makes good use if that feature (Mid 2019)

Shadow Of The Tomb Raider was used as a benchmark for years (2018)

As you start going older than that, even the Steam Deck ends up being very capable.

People had a rough time with Batman Arkham Knight, still looks pretty IMO (2015)

If you’re looking for games that are coming up on 15-20 years old, like Crysis:

S.T.A.L.K.E.R (2007)

Metro 2033 (2010)

Rage (2011)

Doom 3 (2005)

Elder Scrolls Oblivion (2006)

Microsoft finally admits almost all major Windows 11 core features are broken

That’s quite a headline they’ve got there!

After provisioning a PC with a Windows 11, version 24H2 monthly cumulative update released on or after July 2025 [KB5062553], various apps such as StartMenuExperiencehost, Search, SystemSettings, Taskbar or Explorer might experience difficulties.

This will occur for the following: First time user logon after a cumulative update was applied. All user logons to a non-persistent OS installation such as a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) or equivalent as application packages must be installed each logon in such scenarios.

If you are wondering, provisioning essentially is the way admins configure devices as they automatically deploy various settings and policies on a client PC. So while the issue is in office PCs, considering a huge number of enterprise PCs are Windows, this is probably a very big problem.
