Meta Halts Employee Data Tracking After Sensitive Info Reportedly Exposed
For those wondering what was exposed:
The Model Capability Initiative, which was implemented in April and strongly opposed by staff, has been paused following an incident in which employee data became accessible to the entire company.
[...]
Citing an internal security notice and information from three Meta employees, Wired reported that private conversations, prompts, transcriptions and performance reviews were exposed to "anyone inside the company."

Congrats! However, it's worth pointing out that gas prices affect the cost of pretty much everything in the end; transportation/logistics, electricity, etc.

How does this scam work?
These scams can get fairly complex. Sometimes they even employ models to video chat to make the whole thing seem legitimate.
Sometimes these are people who are trapped inside of a compound where they can't leave unless they scam enough victims.
Jim Browning gives us a behind the scenes view on how these work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vu-Y1h9rTUs
Skipping ahead to 4 minutes will show how they typically use the call/text by "accident" method.

16-year-old SATA II SSD survives 1 petabyte of writes, 25x the drive's rating

I definitely want to know more about this. Was this in an actual test environment, or could it be caused by a lot more reads/writes than expected due to something like using nvme's as RAM through page files/swapfile?

Multi-Boxing in Star Citizen
I have used multiple accounts simultaneously for a few purposes. Mostly with another computer, but more recently with a SteamDeck.
Usually I have my alt setup as a getaway driver, especially if I'm running some FPS mission in a PvP hotspot. I usually have a Nursa setup for respawning, but if I have some bad luck (and run out of med gel) I can always have my alt blitz to my main's body for a quick revival. There's also the option of having a literal getaway driver if I decide I want to have some fun breaking out of prison.
Pro tip: if hacking away your CS, have the account with CS go to Kareah first, then have your alt pickup the "Kareah Infiltrated" mission, so that they can land safely and then revive your CS character in the case where you get overrun. Alternatively, you can start the hacking process, then go hide somewhere safe while your alt completes the hack for you.
They can also be useful for "hot drops" near comm arrays (line the ship up right, go full speed and hop out with my main just as I'm passing the array). Then pick up the ECN alert "Network Intrusion Detected" once the comm array hack has begun. This allows you to park the ship immediately outside of the comm array for a faster getaway.
Note: Years ago, picking up this mission with an alt had the side effect of preventing other players from being able to accept this contract. This would effectively allow you to hack the comm array without having to worry about interference. You could even accept the mission to bring a comm array back online and just ignore it to keep an array offline for as long as you wanted. Luckily they eventually patched it out (now, multiple players can accept the same contract for protecting comm arrays).
I have occasionally used my alt for mining in an argo mole. It works pretty well. I have also used it for manning the torpedo launchers on the Polaris, as well as the EMP on the Antares.
If you set up something like an Xbox controller to connect to the other device, it makes it a lot easier to have the alt push whatever button you need without having to completely switch between screens (as well as the occasional input needed to keep the client from timing out due to inactivity).
You could also revive a soft deathed ship and just have your alt fly the other ship back to a hangar instead of having to ditch your main ship.
I haven't done it personally (yet), but for something like the player marketplace it can help to have an alt that's ready to sell something to other players at a moment's notice. My alt could already be at their home location, waiting for the buyer to arrive. Meanwhile, I can mostly continue what I'm already doing with my main without having to pack up early and miss out on some loot/contract completion.

Granted, with all the planned obsolescence happening, you could also argue that engineers "knew" what they were doing.

[Technology Connections] Some DVD re-releases got cheapened out in a weird way [17:59]
Additional context from his pinned comment to that video:
I've been away from internet all day and it sounds like I got my hands on a couple of bootleg/counterfeit sets here! That's neat. Love that. I'm going to leave this video up as it is because the overall lesson here remains mostly the same - but I am embarrassed this thought never occurred to me, especially with The Good Place Blu-rays. I honestly thought a Blu-ray release of that show would be niche enough that a run of pressed discs wouldn't be justified and didn't question it. I've not been paying attention to physical media for nearly a decade so I've missed some memos and made one too many assumptions!

I joined the fediverse when Reddit made their API changes.
For me, personally, I found Kbin/Mbin to be a sort of hybrid between Twitter and Reddit, and I wasn't a fan of the layout. Lemmy felt a lot more like the Reddit-like experience I was looking for.
However, PieFed then came along and it feels like Reddit, but has features that cater to the Fediverse much better than Lemmy does (such as being able to combine communities into feeds, crosspost handling,), as well as other features that are great (polls, spoiler blur for image posts, etc.).

AMD silently removes memory encryption from consumer Ryzen CPUs, leaving users unaware that they may be vulnerable
Reply in thread
A little more context as to when the engineer declined to continue the discussion:
Kilpatrick then brought up something especially awkward. He reminded Lendacky of a comment that the engineer had made back in 2020, confirming that a Ryzen 3700X, a consumer CPU, “should support TSME.” In a later 2025 comment in the same discussion, Lendacky again recommended using TSME, while noting that the motherboard BIOS provider had to expose the option. So there it was, AMD's own engineer, years earlier, acknowledging the feature working on exactly the kind of lower-end chip now stripped of it, proving that Ryzen support was not some fantasy users invented.
After some more back-and-forth, Kilpatrick asked bluntly whether the flag being set to FALSE on consumer chips was a silicon-level limitation or a firmware policy decision — since one is permanent and the other is potentially reversible. Limonciello’s reply effectively closed the chapter. “My apologies, but I don’t have any more information to share on this topic,” he wrote.
To be fair to AMD, there is no clear indication that the company ever publicly advertised TSME as a consumer Ryzen feature. AMD has long said that a related memory protection, Secure Memory Encryption (SME), is available only in the Pro and EPYC CPU tiers. SME is OS-managed, using a single key and allowing the OS to selectively encrypt individual memory pages. TSME, by contrast, is firmware-managed, encrypting all RAM with no OS involvement.
Sounds to me like he had originally wanted to have it enabled for consumer CPUs, but some decision was later made to make this a feature only for higher end chips, even if lower end chips could technically support it. I can't really blame the engineer for wanting to stop the discussion at this point. He's most likely not the one making these decisions and the questions would be best asked to someone higher up.

Google maps is drunk. I'm at the blue dot & wanted to see how long it would take to walk to the red flag and this is the route it suggested.
Time to check out Cartes.app! https://cartes.app/?clic=34.02076%7C-118.50899
It uses OSM and has some very useful routing options for foot/bike/public transportation.
