Kbin's "Log in" bug is discouraging me from participating

I'm having the same issues too. I've even had the scenario of writing a long comment on a thread and getting error-ed away once I hit "Add comment". I don't know why it happened, but it certainly made me stop using kbin for the rest of the day. 😅

It hasn't fully discouraged me though. I remind myself that it's early days so it's going to have a bunch of hiccups along the way.

I miss reddit

It's kinda tricky because a lot of people who just left reddit, left for the reasons you're ranting about. I think that's why there's such a prevalence in posts that are anti-Meta/anti-Threads/anti-corpo. It's so fresh in everyone's mind how greediness has ruined a lot of communities they've built.

I will say, there's a learning curve to using the fediverse (I'm still getting the hang of it). But there's a way to get more "normal" content, you just have to deal with the reality that a lot of those communities are starting out and need your contribution to become a real community.

Besides, you don't have to completely give up reddit. I still use mine and I don't have any intention of deleting it any time soon.

Is Hogwarts Legacy any good?

It's alright. Story was okay. Combat was pretty entertaining; although I'd recommend playing on higher difficulty, the gear progression makes the game too easy. The crafting mechanic was also fun for a while.

I think the worst thing about it is map bloat, but if that's a nonissue for you, you might enjoy it.

Why "kbin"?

Reply in thread

Yeah, I was hoping I could find an old post from him regarding the name, but google just shows me code, and I didn't want to bother him because I imagine he's busy. 😅

How to make social media less for instant gratification and more for long term value?

I honestly think it needs a collective cultural shift by the users to not get so clickbait-y. I think one of the issues in social media is the constant pressure to stay updated, not just to post but also react. Interactions have a deadline and if you don't meet it, too bad, so sad--which, to a degree makes sense for its usage. If I just want to keep people updated on the goings-on in my life, quick reactions are more than enough.

But if I want more meaningful discussions (which is what I hope for in the fediverse and what I tried to get from reddit), interactions should be normalized or even encouraged to have longer lifespans and users would ideally contribute more thoughtfully. This comes with the consequence of not having as much content, or having to be one of the few people constantly commenting and posting to keep a magazine or community active.

This is why I'm on the fence about "rule" posts. On one hand, it's one way to populate the fediverse and I do like variety in my scrolling, but on the other, it detracts from being able to see discussions, and it can get tiresome to see meme after meme; because honestly, if I wanted a barrage of shit posts I would've stayed on reddit.

What are some of your favorite videogames from your childhood? What made them so special?

Ooh! Nostalgia time!

I have very vivid memories of Sonic, Pac-Man 2, Moto Racer 97, Contra, Final Fight 2 & 3, Knights of the Round, Earthworm Jim, Spyro, Phantasy Star IV, and Mega-Man. I don't remember a lick of storyline but when I close my eyes, they're there.

As for games that have a more emotional tether, that would be things like Legend of Mana, Chrono Cross, and Threads of Fate. All of which helped build my love for fantasy. I was enamored by the art style and gameplay of LoM, the fact that you could mix and match different skills and discover new ones was like a drug, add in a crafting and pet system and I was stuck. I have a deep love for the soundtrack of Chrono Cross, the combat system also challenged my stupid child brain. Threads of Fate was more of a casual playthrough, but I remember going back to it over and over again, because I kept losing my saves.

I also have games that were more communal: sometimes played with cousins and siblings or with me as the riveted audience. Things like Bomber-man, Tetris, Puyo-Puyo 2, Worms, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy 7-9, Valkyrie Profile, Prince of Persia and Grandia. I have stories for all of those but this is already getting too long. 😅

Is this asexuality or something else?

Asexuality is a broad term that can refer to many things. Some people are genuinely sex-repulsed, some are completely indifferent, some can only experience sexual attraction when there's an established emotional bond, etc. All of these fit under the umbrella of asexuality.

You fit if you so choose to. It sounds to me that you have a high libido but no sexual "attraction" to people. There may be a more specific term under the ace spectrum, but the labels are really just there to help you find community.

Have got vs Have

If I remember correctly, "have got to" is more informal than "have to". So yeah, it's cleaner/more grammatical.

I think most people use the "got" as a extra word to emphasize urgency in day to day conversation. So in that way, it's useful?

We need to be more active about commenting!

I think it's a matter of content type. We have a lot of links to interesting articles or pictures of memes with no additional input from the poster. Those make me less inclined to comment. I just tend to upvote/boost and move on.

I think for more discussion/opinions, people need a spring board to jump off of.

Fanfic Summaries

There's a sweet spot for summaries to be vague enough to entice, but also clear enough that the reader can get a gist of the story. The only ones I tend to skip are those that don't bother at all.

With my own summaries, I've recently started adding excerpts from the story, then an overall quick view. My format tends to go:

Summary blurb
"Excerpt"

Liara and Shepard and my new found love of romance in video games

Reply in thread

Agreed. I think the closest one would be Garrus actually, but even then, there was a gap.

One thing I will say about DA:O that I think they did better than ME, was how some romantic interests would take initiative towards the player, which I found surprising and caught me off guard. It helped build the illusion that the characters were their own person, and thus the relationship between player character and them was more genuine.

Is it just me or are there 0 recent news articles about reddit's status after the fiasco?

I wouldn't say it's unaffected. The quality of the content has dropped, less people are posting which makes the feeds look and feel stagnant, and some subs are just gone now. Whether or not that stays the same months or years from now, who can say?

I don't think any censorship is happening though. Reddit is still very much an internet subculture thing and fediverse apps even more niche.

For those who grew up without DLCs and microtransactions and games went unchanged after launch. How has the adjustment been to current day monetization and game updates?

I wait for deep sales now. That usually comes with the downside that the game isn't as hyped up or commonplace, but on the flipside, it's been patched and surely someone on the internet has fixes to any issues that may arise.

I do buy into monetization sometimes, but I tend to budget it very tightly and only go for cheap skins, or novelty gacha characters.
