Readers and Writer’s Resource to Fanfiction | Community Guidelines

[Work in Progress] feel free to add your suggestions below

Introduction

Fanfiction is a fan written story based on a popular media, book, anime or literature. It needs no detailed intro for a lot of us know what we want when getting into fanfiction. But if you don’t, read around for some ideas.

Basic Guidelines

  1. Be respectful - A fanfic is above all else, a safe space for one to explore and experiment. You might encounter others who have different opinions and views as you. And that’s fine. But be reminded that fanfictions are written for free, a true labor of love. In this case, “if you have nothing good to say, don’t say anything at all” applies.

  2. Valid Criticisms are Welcome- that said, a fanfic can be an avenue for some to improve their writing. Valid and sincere constructive feedback are welcome.

  3. Be civil - let’s keep this place a safe and warm place for everyone to enjoy their fandoms.

  4. Proper Credits- Always credit when sharing works that aren’t yours.

  5. Proper tagging and labels- Do label your fandom when sharing a story for easy searchability. Example- Fanfiction Title [Fandom]

Writer’s Resource

  • Choose a fandom
  • Write… and write - it’s always the first step that’s most difficult
  • Don’t be afraid and/or ashamed - you write what you like. No pressure, no guilt. :)
  • Proofread… or not. It’s up to you.

Reader’s Resource

  • Respect each other’s fandom.
  • Feel free to read and discuss. Share what you love.
  • Requests are welcome (but note that this community is just created on lemmy. There might not be a lot of takers, for now.)
  • Enjoy and have fun.

Topic Ideas

  • Favorite fanfics
  • Writing tips
  • Sharing of reading lists
  • Writing Prompts
  • [More to come as this list is revisited]

Misc

  • Fanfiction.net and archiveofourown.org are both welcome
  • Feel free to share fanfics from other media like tumblr, livejournal and more.

Suggestions

Suggestions are always welcome :)

What's everybody's preferred writing equipment?

Hey everyone,

I'm curious to know what the denizens of Lemmy prefer when it comes to their writing setup. Are you team "old school" with pen and paper, or do you have a specific software, keyboard, or device that you can't live without?

For me, I've become quite fond of Obsidian. I'm flexible with any keyboard that feels good, but I prefer running a Fedora machine. I absolutely detest writing on mobile—even tablets give me the "ick," though I do have a frightening number of ideas sitting in my phone's notes app (also Obsidian).

What's your setup? Any gear you swear by?

What do you guys think about me uploading my fanfic from ao3 to other sites ? (Warning: Started typing too much randomly without care about structure or logic below .)

I have a fanfic on AO3 I've been working on since April, I also started writing I'm April so I'm a amateur writer who's honestly terrible at a lot of things and still figuring things out now for Writing.

I have nothing better to do so I've been working on this fic a lot and constantly trying to fix it. I went through three rewrites and am on my final version and at chapter 4. I've mostly worked out my style of writing and formatting, while learning what's necessary for the most part of the series I have another character from another one crossover with, doing the usual writing something you basically never watched or played or read. I am feeling like expanding my fic to other sites which I honestly already have, but I haven't uploaded everything. I'm still on chapter 1, though on Webnovel I have half of chapter 1 there. They're not getting much attention but it's expected. Should I upload all the chapters and just go on to work on chapter 5 ? Or should I just upload them on specific days apart while I see if anyone actually comments and being specific about why they dislike it or like it and see if they want more. (Also uploaded by fic on Webnovel, Wattpad and Quotev.)

I value comments over any form of likes and views , I mean views essentially just means people saw it but it could have been a quick glance and nothing more , usually the views are a lot but the firm of likes or comments could be few to none. The likes as well can say someone liked your fic but it's not specific or true feedback.

While on AO3 I have a lot of comments not all are very specific and I realised on my own the mistakes my chapters had and inaccuracies, but people said it was peak or great despite how clear the mistakes are. Doesn't help I have absolutely no one to talk to about anything so I'm just left with myself and my overthinking and ADHD to try to figure things out when I'm not even a sliver of competent at even basic thing's....

It's a miracle the fic got to this point of being actually okay to ignore certain things and leave it as is.  But I'm not getting any comments on suggestions or critics or anything that might motivate me to continue, sure hits and kudos along with bookmarks go up, but it's not a clear opinion that pushes me.

I'm sorry if it feels like I don't value the who like and bookmark, it's just I'm not really someone who can move on with just that...

First time happening to me, a fanfiction deleted while I was reading it

I have the rss feed for ships I love, this morning I got a notification for a Shadowzel fic and I jumped on it. Three chapters published at 3:30 am. I opened it immediately and waited until 8 pm to read it. First chapter, everything is good andinteresting. I go to the next chapter and Ao3 says "we can't find what you're looking for".

Argh, so sad that this person decided in so little time to delete their work. But I also should start downloading my "mark for later" list.

Random Fanfic Idea(s): Rewriting MR in the WTWB/TLH Tone — or a potential Multiverse-Style Crossover

Warning: Long Post

So this is half thought experiment, half “someone please steal this idea because I’m terrible at writing.”

Lately I’ve been thinking about the tonal whiplash between the original When the Wind Blows / The Lake House duology and the later Maximum Ride series. Same core concept, same characters at the DNA level — but wildly different vibes: MA techno-thriller vs YA adventure dystopia.

That got me thinking of two possible fanfic directions that could be genuinely interesting if handled carefully.

Idea 1: A Dark Rewrite of MR (or Just Book 1)

Basically: A rewrite of Maximum Ride — or even just Book 1 — but written in the original WTWB/TLH tone.

Not “grimdark for shock value,” but:

More grounded science

More body horror implied, not constant

The Flock treated less like quirky teens and more like escaped experiments

Violence and danger feeling consequential, not episodic

The YA version of MR often softens:

Injuries

Psychological trauma

What it actually means to be engineered, hunted, and never safe

A WTWB-style rewrite could:

Strip out some of the humor

Slow things down

Emphasize fear, paranoia, and mistrust

Make the Erasers feel less like comic-book villains and more like inevitable predators

Same plot beats, same characters — just framed through an MA lens.

Idea 2: MR × WTWB “Multiverse” Crossover

This one’s a bit more out there, but hear me out.

Instead of a straight rewrite, imagine a multiverse-style crossover:

YA Maximum Ride universe

MA WTWB/TLH universe

Not a merger — more like:

One or more characters crossing universes accidentally or intentionally

Or the two Flocks becoming aware of each other

Think:

MR Flock: hopeful, bantering, heroic

WTWB Flock: traumatized, clinical, morally gray

The contrast alone could carry the story.

Why This Could Actually Work

This isn’t unprecedented. MARVEL, DC, etc. do this all the time:

Ultimate vs 616

Elseworlds

What If…?

etc.

What makes MR especially interesting is that:

The same author wrote both tones

The MA version came first

The YA version arguably sanitizes the original concept

Seeing:

Max (YA) react to Max (MA)

Angel’s portrayal across tones

How the School differs between universes

…could say a lot about how tone changes meaning, not just content.

Themes This Could Explore

Is the YA Flock “lucky,” or just protected by genre?

Which version feels more human?

Does hope survive realism, or does realism crush hope?

Are the MR kids heroes because of the tone, or in spite of it?

You could even frame it as:

The WTWB world viewing the MR world as dangerously naïve

The MR world seeing WTWB as broken and cruel

Neither necessarily wrong.

Final Thoughts

I’m not claiming this should exist — just that it could be fascinating if done well.

And to be clear:

I understand MR is YA

I don’t think it “failed” by not being MA

I absolutely love MR

I just personally think that the contrast between the two versions of the same idea is uniquely ripe for exploration.

So yeah — feel free to steal these ideas. I’m genuinely curious what someone more talented could do with them.

Would love to hear:

Which idea people prefer

Whether a WTWB-tone rewrite would enhance or ruin MR

Or if the tonal gap is too big to bridge at all

Idea for a Discord bot: track fanfiction links

Hey, I’ve been kicking around an idea for a bot: it would look for fanfiction links shared in a server and keep track of which ones get shared the most.

The concept:

  • Track sites like AO3, FanFiction.net, ScribbleHub, etc.
  • Count how often each link gets posted
  • Commands to see the “top” links or which domains are tracked

It’s just a rough idea, I haven’t built it yet. Curious if anyone thinks this would actually be useful or has tips for implementing it without overcomplicating things.

Do you use RSS feed with Ao3?

Just a reminder to people that is possible to follow a tag through a rss feed reader. I put my favourite rarepairs, so that I have a notification of the one in a month fic that gets published. It has changed the way I use Ao3 completely, I spend much less time browsing on the site.

I wrote an original One Piece series, looking for feedback

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/34775239

Hey, everyone!

About 6 months ago, I began writing an original series set in the One Piece universe as a way to connect to my kid, who loves One Piece. Since then, it blossomed into a 170,000 word (and growing) story that encompasses the entire scope of the original East Blue story arc.

This new adventure follows a new crew of pirates in a familiar yet different world along the same trajectory as the original Straw Hat crew. It has a mix of original characters and reimagined/remixed characters from the Manga/Anime.

As it was intended for a young/teen audience, there is no graphic violence, sex, or nudity. I worked very hard to keep it in the spirit of Odo's work.

I have published the first 8 chapters of my work on AO3 so that my kid can share with her friends, who were excited by the idea. I was hoping to get some feedback from the community here as well since there's always room for improvement.

Here is the link to my work: "One Piece - Twist of Fate"

It's a Date | A New Chapter | Part 1

This is a high school AU of the Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit characters. Victor Quartermaine x Wallace shipping.

It was Saturday afternoon, and Victor was exactly where he wanted to be: buried under the covers of his king-sized bed, fit for a king like him. Victor had spent the whole day in bed so far since he went to sleep there the night before, with Wallace in his dreams. Now, Victor was awake enough to actually enjoy the day, and best of all? He didn’t have to go to school.

Without much thought and a great deal of boredom, Victor scrolled through TikTok posts on hunting and the like. Victor had a hunting rifle of his own, actually. His dad, Harold Quartermaine, had given it to him as a small child to keep him out of the house so “he didn’t have to deal with his constant whining”. Victor sighed, sinking deeper into the covers. And yet here I am, in bed, but at least I’m away from Dad right now. At least he doesn’t think I whine anymore. In fact, Victor’s dad hasn’t said anything of the sort in a long time.

Victor shook his head, deciding not to think about it and watch a video by @thehuntingexpert792 on how to properly hunt a rabbit. All of a sudden, a message appeared on the screen.

“Hi” from Wallace.

Victor suddenly felt as if he had a ton of coffee, which he usually drank when he wanted, or needed, to stay wide awake, especially for hunting and late-night calls with his friends.

People generally found Victor unapproachable, so he didn’t have many friends besides his own little group with Bernard Cedarwood and Tristan Goldman. They were from his middle school, though.

Victor then focused his eyes on the message again.

“Hi”.

He began to feel giddy, a feeling he was long used to by now. “What is this feeling?” he would ask himself, he would ask his dog Phillip for so many days and nights. It just dawned on him a few days ago after he had his first dream about Wallace.

Love. A crush.

With shaky hands, his face gradually turning warmer, he sent back a message.

“What ho!”

What ho? Seriously?

Victor facepalmed. Why am I always so awkward? That’s the best I could think of??

That’s what he always said to the girl he used to like, his ex, Campanula Tottington. But of course, she didn’t like someone like him. A mere nobody. A slimeball.

Victor felt his phone buzz again.

“LOLLL”

Wallace thought it was funny? Campanula never did.

“LOL”, he replied.

As the feeling began to rise in his chest, Victor planned on doing exactly what he should have done: ask out that blithering idiot. Wallace was always a blithering idiot, but admittedly, a cute blithering idiot. A handsome blithering idiot. He didn’t see it when they first met, when he got mad at Wallace for his peaceful ways and the way he seemingly could win over his Campanula, but none of that mattered.

His hatred toward Wallace turned into fixation. And dreams. And well, he didn’t hate Wallace. Not for a long time, he didn’t. He was in love with him.

“Would you…” Victor typed the words on the screen. “Hey, I want to ask someone….”

No, no. The first one was better.

“Would you like to go bowling sometime?”

Wallace’s reply was almost immediately, much to Victor’s surprise and content.

“I would love to, Victor. I’m the inventor, but you’re the one who always has the smart ideas.”

Victor’s face got hotter, feeling even giddier.

Smart ideas?

Wallace, the utter vegetable he thought he hated, was actually a cute vegetable. Maybe even his vegetable. And that vegetable thought he was smart.

“So”, began Victor.

“Yeah?”

“It’s a date? LOL”

Victor began even giddier. He swore the room was spinning, and his face got even hotter than before. “A date?!” he giggled. “Nah, nah, Wallace and I are just friends, right Phillip?”

Phillip barked in a way Victor saw as sarcastic agreement, like “Yeah, right”.

But Wallace? He just answered: “If you want it to be 🤷‍♂️”

“WHAT”

“Did I say something wrong?”

“Oh no no no! You said everything right Wallace.”

“Is it a date?”

Victor sighed, taking deep breaths to ease his giddy feeling. “Of course”.

When You're So Early to The Fandom That There's Not An Official Tag

Just watched To Be Hero X ep 1 and 2 in eng dub today and immediately got hooked. Was curious to see if there were Ao3 fics, and there are, but we're so young that it didn't have an official fandom tag 😭

This is my first time ever being so early lol, I'll treasure it, can't wait to see it hit 1000k fics by season end!

Also that first episode was fucking CRAZY
