Everybody laughing at this comment needs to know that THIS DOES HAPPEN. Ex-employee had to return her laptop, so we send a UPS return label via e-mail. She shows up at the UPS store with the laptop in hand and is surprised when they tell her it needs to be in a box. We received the laptop inside the wildest combination of two boxes taped back-to-back and filled with garbage that didn't even form effective packing material.

Some people have literally never shipped anything in their life before, despite being 30 🤷

Painful Sideloading

Reply in thread

You're missing the point. It is "just" the act of downloading and installing, which were seen as normal things to do. However, by calling it "sideloading" they can then attach any meaning, any implication they wish. This is now something different and wierd, not something normal people do, does your mom sideload? I'm pretty sure the battle for control of your phone that you bought was lost as soon as we allowed them to call it sideloading.

What is the deal with IPv6?

Inertia. IPv4 still works, every service on the internet still available over it. You can just be lazy and things will be ok.

Complexity. IPv6 is complex in the areas where v4 sucks. Ran out of address space? Here's a lot more address space. Multiple routers offering multiple routes? Just grab them all, have as many addresses as you want. No method to find peers on the same subnet? Here's like three methods to find peers on the subnet. All this is stuff you gotta learn!

Workarounds. Initially, ISPs thought that people turned their PC off at night and they'd get the IP address back. Then, they were leaving multiple devices on all day! So they came up with a hack that pretends everyone is behind one IP address, now all your devices are just one IP. But that IP still stays up and occupied all the time, they're not getting it back, so they put all their customers under another (CG)NAT. It's just NAT all the way down whenever they run out, and this way they never run out.

TIL about the arc lamp

I learned about these from the projectionist where I worked, back when I was a kid. When they'd get taken out of a projector and thrown in the garbage, he'd smash them on the ground to get the tungsten electrodes out. Apparently they both looked cool, like the surface of the moon, and sold for a lot!

Where's my fellow crims at?

Why do you think there's such an interest in VFIO and passing a graphics card thru to a VM? You think all these people are just happily making their own cloud gaming Stadia clone? Nah fam, they're fucking cheaters trying to hide their tracks. For every five legit posts there's a "why can't I get BattleEye/EAC to work in a VM?" JUST STOP CHEATING BRO

Last year, Canadian politicians banned bike lanes and speed cameras in Toronto. Now it's blowing up in their face. You reap what you sow.

For the second time so far too! Everyone forgets how Mike Harris got elected upon the simple promise he would ban "photo-radar" as it was called then. Just like the truck speed limiters, people go apeshit when you restrict their driving speed. Bring back speed cams, slap a 105 km/h limiter on ALL vehicles! Bring it the fuck on!

I wish I knew. I spoke to my brother about this a while ago, and told him I'd never gone to a doctor because I always thought it was a "strength of will" thing. He told me that was insane. First thing he did was get to a doctor and get prescribed. The thought never crossed my mind.

Similarly I was watching some show with my partner and this guy in the show talks derisively to he daughter: "I bought you your anti-di-pressants, what more do you want?" And he's stressing the word, like he believes it's some kinda party drug. I think that mentality is a very real thing and hits other areas like birth control too. "I didn't have this for ME and thus I resent you taking the easy way out!" seems to be the thought process.

Self of Theseus

Reply in thread

He was not even alive to begin with. Literally a robot following the instructions left by a recording of a human mind. He just thought he was a real human because the recording said/believed so.

I would say no, because he never was a part of the original. IIRC, he's a copy of this person's memories before they even died, so he forked the progression of memories? The original would have lived, and died, with no continuity going over to the clone. The clone, upon receiving these memories, believes himself to be the original, but he's wrong.

What was the conversation about sex and drugs like in your home growing up?

Back when I was in elementary school, I had a classmate named "Noah Bates" and they called him Master Bates as a joke. I didn't understand at the time so I want home and asked my mom why they kept calling him that, and why this was supposed to be funny. She couldn't explain, was all flustered, and eventually said that it was a sexual innuendo, which I also didn't understand the meaning of. We never had any other serious discussions about sex or drugs. Parents never drank alcohol even so I figured it was a non-starter with them.

We had sex ed in high school, but they spoke of it in terms my brain didn't understand. "It's better than any drug" yes but I haven't done any drugs yet, so that is a meaningless comparison to me. A pretty dry and technical rundown of it. The DARE officer brought that suitcase full of drugs that shows you what each one is supposed to look like, and all I remember is wondering what they all did. I also had to write a paper on why drugs were bad, and I got hallucinogens as a topic. The only thing I could come up with that misconstruing a dangerous situation and injuring yourself.

Internet Tutorials

Always always check what version of blender the tutorial is for! Later versions have automated and fixed so much annoying shit that you had to do/fix manually in older versions. Blender 5.1 is way different to 2.8! Also it doesn't matter what menu it's in because you can just search for that tool with the search function, bind it to spacebar.

Blender is actually amazing now (>5.0) and I feel like lots of people tried 2.8 and got scared because it was janky and it turned them off Blender forever.
