Gordie Howe bridge opening scuttled after Trump officials pushed back

Two top Trump advisers privately pushed back this week on plans to open the long-awaited Gordie Howe International Bridge, according to three sources familiar with the behind-the-scenes discussions.

U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick had been appointed by President Donald Trump to lead discussions with the Canadians about opening the $4.7, six-lane span between Michigan and Ontario, citing “outstanding issues” that require resolution.

...

Trump's comments followed the revelation of a meeting between Lutnick and Matthew Moroun, the billionaire owner of the Ambassador Bridge, whose private crossing will face the first competition for lucrative truck traffic in the Ambassador's 97 years of operation.

Lemmy instance post visibility rankings

How I ranked the Lemmy instance visibility by sort type

I'm building Stakswipe, a mobile Lemmy client with a swipe-to-vote UI. One of the problems I ran into was the anonymous feed — when you're not logged in, you need to pick an instance to connect to upfront, and that choice matters more than most people realise. Rather than just guessing or defaulting to lemmy.world, I wanted to objectively measure which instances give the best view of lemmy for someone browsing without an account. I put together a benchmarking script that tests the top 20 instances by monthly active users and scores them.

It's worth noting that some instances defederate from others or block certain communities, and that's completely fine — it's one of Lemmy's strengths. Communities and instances should be able to self-govern and set their own norms. These rankings aren't a judgment on any instance's moderation choices; they're purely about federation breadth and visibility of all that lemmy has to offer for a general anonymous feed.

What I measured

For each instance × sort combination, I fetched posts anonymously until I hit a quality floor suited to that sort's algorithm:

  • Active (48 hours) — Lemmy's Active sort decays based on the most recent comment time, capped at 48 hours. The script stops when the last post on a page has been quiet for more than two days.
  • Hot (24 hours) — Hot decays based on post publication time using a gravity of 1.8. Anything older than a day is well past its peak rank.
  • New (2 hours) — Purely chronological. I stop at 2 hours to focus on live traffic.
  • Top 6 Hour / 12 Hour / Day — These are ranked by score within a fixed server-side time window, so the feed exhausts naturally. I stop when posts drop below 5, 10, and 20 absolute votes respectively.

How scoring works

Every post has a canonical ActivityPub ID (ap_id). The script builds a universe — the union of all unique posts seen across all instances for a given sort. An instance's ability to surface that universe is what is measured.

Each instance is scored across four metrics, then the scores are normalized against the best performer and combined:

MetricWeightWhat it captures
Posts visible40%Federation breadth — how much of the universe this instance sees
Comments visible35%Federation depth — whether post threads actually federate
Post vote totals15%Signal quality — are the votes syncing, or just stubs?
Comment vote totals10%Thread engagement fidelity

The instances with the highest weighted score for each sort type are shown.

YSK About Ali Khamenei's fatwa against nuclear weapons

You should know this because one of the reasons Trump's been trying to use to justify this war is that Iran never said they wouldn't pursue nuclear weapons.

You could say the fatwa is just talk but there's a strategic argument for Iran to not get nuclear weapons besides the moral case. Iran doesn't want to get nukes and become a pariah state like North Korea and cut itself off from global trade, they're a Petro state they need trade. At the same time they don't want Israel and the US to be able to bomb them with impunity. So their best strategy is to remain close to building a bomb, that way they can get sanctions relief while being able to dash for a bomb and nuclear deterrence in the case of a war.

Civil Rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson has died at 84

The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, who led the U.S. Civil Rights Movement for decades, died Tuesday. The protege of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and two-time presidential candidate was 84.

As a young organizer in Chicago, Jackson was called to meet with King at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, shortly before King was killed, and he publicly positioned himself thereafter as King’s successor.

Jackson led a lifetime of crusades in the United States and abroad, advocating for the poor and underrepresented on issues, including voting rights, job opportunities, education and health care. He scored diplomatic victories with world leaders, and through his Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, he channeled cries for Black pride and self-determination into corporate boardrooms, pressuring executives to make America a more open and equitable society.

And when he declared, “I am Somebody,” in a poem he often repeated, he sought to reach people of all colors. “I may be poor, but I am Somebody; I may be young; but I am Somebody; I may be on welfare, but I am Somebody,” Jackson intoned.

It was a message he took literally and personally, having risen from obscurity in the segregated South to become America’s best-known civil rights activist since King.

Tesla's flashing lights

Across the street from me is a gym with rooftop parking. Most of the time it has been empty but recently a bunch of Tesla's have been parked up there, which I assume are storage for the Tesla dealership down the street. Last night a bunch of them started blinking their yellow lights, sometimes in sync. More interesting / creepy than infuriating for me honestly since I can just close my curtains but it's probably annoying someone.

Kinda creepy though since it seems like they're, or someone controlling them, is plotting something.

Deutschland Uber alles

Context: on the eve of WWI the SPD in Germany was the most successful and powerful socialist party in the world with a good shot of taking power in a couple years. Like the other socialist parties it was officially opposed to imperialist wars, but when it came down to it, barring a few principled individuals like rosa Luxembourg, the party voted yes on war bonds out of fear of looking unpatriotic, signing the blank check the kaiser issued and sending Germany into WWI which of course worked out great for the working class and Germany as a whole...

Unless you're in a militia, owning an AR-15 is just LARPing

This is referring to all the people who say I own this gun to protect against a tyrannical government. While I agree fighting a tyrannical government is noble Most of those people aren't serious about it and are just LARPing. If you are serious about fighting for your freedom then you'd know that fighting alone will get you nowhere. No revolution or civil war has ever been won by scattered armed individuals with no organization, you need to join a group to be effective.

But all the militias are full of right wing psychos

Yeah, but you won't be able to change their mind from the outside. Join one and try to educate them on true freedom from the billionaire capitalist class. Worst case scenario even if they don't respond you'll still be training and learning how to work in a group, and you can be a spy and learn their tactics and how to defeat them in the case of a civil war.

I'll just buy the gun now and join a group once shit starts going down

That's the wrong order, get organized and then buy weapons. Left wing organizations will be banned and forced underground long before guns are. There's a very high probability trump will ban armed left wing groups in the next couple years, him restricting gun purchases is far less likely. It's best to get in an organization and build trust before it goes underground because after they are banned they are rightfully more picky on who they let in for fear of informants.

YSK the Venezuelans community in the US is not representative of Venezuelans as a whole.

Venezuelans who come to the US tend to be wealthier, in order to be able to get here, and have enough issues with their country in order to leave, issues that they will usually blame on the leadership.

None of this is to say Maduro has majority support, he doesn't by most accounts, or that they don't represent a sizable chunk of Venezuelans who don't like Maduro, but that his support isn't as non-existent over there as it is here.

It'd be like if Trump took over the US and you only got your views on what Americans think from expat communities in Canada. They would probably cheer his death, even if it was by a foreign empire, but that wouldn't be representative of average Americans who probably wouldn't like the foreign intervention, even if they don't like Trump.
