What comedy movies aged like fine wine?

Reply in thread

I wish I could find it again, but years ago I saw a video about why you couldn't make Blazing Saddles today, aside from it already existing/permission/etc. It wasn't the racism or anything, or how people today are too sensitive.

It couldn't be made today because Blazing Saddles basically destroyed the entire genre.

Prior to its release, Westerns were everywhere. They were incredibly popular, with countless movies and TV shows released every year. Then this movie comes along, points out all of the overused tropes, and reveals the formula they've all been using. The genre of Westerns has never recovered. It would be lampooning obscure content with dated references that people don't understand.

That's the real reason it couldn't be made today.

Manage Devices without AD,GPO or an MDM

Focus on the business needs. What do you need? Why do you/they need it? What will they have that they don't have now? This part is very important. If you can't come up with a compelling business case, then there's no reason to move forward on it.

How much will it cost? Are there any cheaper options? Some places would rather hire a $100k/year sysadmin rather than buy a $10k/year license. Other places will get excited when you talk about reducing support staff. Keep that in mind. Also, some places are more concerned about how replaceable someone is, so using standard products are more valuable than price or capability.

When you're evaluating options to recommend, try to get information about the entire landscape. There's a very good chance that they're already paying for Microsoft E5, which means you already have a license for Intune that you aren't using. If not, you can pitch it as a total package with other benefits.

ETA: Security is a really big deal at most companies. Internal and external threats, data loss, exfiltration, legal compliance requirements, etc. But smaller places often won't care until they've been burned.

Data from independent organisations suggests Hybrids don't actually prevent as much emissions on average over traditional ICE cars as thought in real-world use | Just Have A Think

Reply in thread

Hybrids (at least Toyota hybrids; unclear about other brands) don't just use a smaller engine - it's a much more efficient engine design. However, this design also requires performance compromises that are only acceptable because there's an electric motor supplementing it.

Someone else already linked the Technology Connections video that covers it in much greater detail.

Burning Gas Pollutes So Much, Dirty EV Battery Manufacturing Evens Out In About 2 Years

Reply in thread

Huge is subjective, but there are many solar farms today running on just a few acres. Some quick googling says that community-based and commercial farms typically run on 10-40 acres, generating between 50-200 megawatts. If you consider 40 acres to be a huge farm, then sure. But it doesn't make much sense to run these in a decent populated area anyway. This is no different than coal, gas, or other power plants today, albeit for different reasons.

As for huge batteries, yes, we will need them once solar power capacity reaches a point where generation in the day exceeds the demand. As it stands, many places still have off-peak pricing at night. Solar would need to counterbalance that completely before we need huge batteries for solar.

Why democrats under Biden administration didn't release Epstein files?

Legal Eagle just released a video about "the real Epstein files". The main point they covered in the video is victim impact. The victims could be threatened and harassed because of the info.

Another point not covered is that criminal case info is typically not disclosed. Releasing a list of accused perpetrators (i.e. pedophiles/child rapists) encourages vigilante justice. It also interferes with any ongoing investigations, which should (at least in theory) still be ongoing.

I don't want Trump to release the case info. I want his DOJ to announce charges against people like Les Wexner, based on that info. And I want it to not just be his political enemies and bullshit lies.

Isn't "MAGA" an admission that currently, America is NOT great?

Their claim is that the country has been ruined by the left, and they want to restore it to its former glory. It requires ignoring the fact that the country has taken a hard right shift since the time they are idealizing.

As for the cognitive dissonance, Stephen Colbert (during The Colbert Report) played around with this self-contradiction. His book is titled "America Again: Re-becoming The Greatness We Never Weren't"

Landlords Demand Tenants’ Workplace Logins to Scrape Their Paystubs

At most employers, this is grounds for immediate termination, and rightfully so. Rarely are the credentials to view paystubs entirely separate from the rest.

You've now given your potential landlord access to a much wider system. In many places, the potential landlords are then criminally guilty of unauthorized access to a computer system, AKA "hacking". The potential tenant typically does not have the authority to grant the authorization.

Trump plans to throw out federal workers’ union contracts

Reply in thread

That's also pretty damn close to what Trump genuinely wants - for everyone currently doing the work to quit. That way he can install lackeys across the board.

Strikes normally work because the other side wants something - usually the business owner wants labor to create a product. That isn't the case here.

I'm not saying it's pointless, but the classic strategies will need to be rethought.

Reddit purges all NSFW subreddits

This has been predicted for many years. Most were expecting it to happen before the IPO, since investors are afraid of porn.

They had also been gradually heading down this path for a long time, making porn harder and harder (heh) to find and view.
