Canadian politician calls on government to help BioWare employees buy the studio and run it themselves

Reply in thread

If they retained some of the talent (specifically the writers) they could make another Mass Effect adjacent game and call it something else. The articles start writing themselves, "The main people behind Mass Effect are working a new game."

I don't think it has to be a "triple A" game to be a commercial success.

Companies reinventing themselves has been done before many times (Black Isle Studios -> Obsidian; Squaresoft -> Square -> Square Enix; Konami -> Kojima Productions) and the Canadian government has thrown money at fiscally riskier projects.

[Video] Protester got aura

Reply in thread

We are quickly reaching the point where what we see on the internet can no longer be trusted. This quote you posted is bang on.

I was there on the internet when everyone was saying, "that looks photoshopped," and there was a lot of confusion if the image was legitimate or not. Now we're hitting the point where AI videos and images are just hitting that stage of "ehhh maybe that's real?"

AI slop still has that shittieness to it (blurred words and images, gibberish, the occasional extra finger, stilted speech), but in a few years time it's going to be way harder to detect the AI slop - and I fucking hate it.

I get the feeling that real artists and creators will be further relegated to the fringes if there isn't a dramatic shift in the AI trajectory we're on. Do not underestimate the shear amount of incredibly dim people that will eat up AI slop for HOURS and ask for more.

No words

I think it's important to watch the clip that this headline of Mandy Patinkin is referencing to be able to appreciate the fuller context of this meme. Unfortunately, this meme is vague enough to confuse people comparing what Seinfeld said with what Patinkin said. Patkin also does an amazing throw back to Princess Bride to make his point too! https://youtu.be/dFjOb9DGS1w

Don Lemon Taken Into Custody

Reply in thread

Don Lemon was there as an independent reporter interviewing the protestors and church people as the protest was going on. I just watched Legal Eagle's video about the protest yesterday.

Basically, it boils down to the federal government pushing to get a perp walk (photos of the alleged criminal in handcuffs being walked by "authorities") to plaster photos of them all over social media to make the accused look bad. As Legal Eagle says, it's the federal government making content and doing it for the memes.

Once they're arrested, federal lawyers TRY to get them in front of a judge to get them (protestors and Don't Lemon now) convicted of something, but in this case a whole bunch of judges have said, "What you're doing doesn't make sense and hasn't been done before, but if you want to try this case in front a grand jury - go ahead." The judge knows they won't because they'll lose so the case eventually gets dropped - but hey, they got some good photos of people they don't like!

FBI raids home of former Trump national security advisor John Bolton

Reply in thread

I think we need to call it what it is now - a purge.

Purges can be both violent and nonviolent. I'd argue that the Trump administration is purging through deportations, litigation, and now raids against detractors. Likely, this style of purging will only escalate towards more violence through the legal system until it reaches an explosive, physically violent moment. We're not even a year into his term...

We've seen this all before. History doesn't repeat, but it often rhymes.

Don Lemon arrested by federal authorities, his attorney says

I just posted this in another thread on the same story. Here's what I wrote:

Iron Age Surgeons Fixed a Woman's Shattered Jaw With Primitive Prosthetic—and She Survived

I kind of hate most media's use of the word "primitive" - particularly when it comes to our ancestors. It's like, okay reporter let's see YOU try and repair someone's shattered jaw with stuff you find in the forest. Let's see you try and build a fish trap so that you can feed yourself and your family. Let's see anyone eke out a living harvesting plants that may or may not kill you.

Nothing about what any of our ancestors did was primitive. What they did to survive was incredibly sophisticated and separates humans from the rest of the animal kingdom that can barely operate beyond eating and fucking. The use of "primitive" gives an air of superiority from someone whose greatest challenge in life is deciding on their latest Uber delivery food order while they lay on the couch scratching their ass.

TIL Michael Jackson's iconic style, fashion, and choreography were heavily influenced by Bob Fosse's performance as the Snake in the 1974 musical film The Little Prince

Reply in thread

I mean, yes and no. You can see all the iconic MJ moves in Bob Fosse's performance here, but they're not quite the same. As well, Bob Fosse, as far as I know and I honestly don't know anything beyond this clip and I can't be bothered to look it up, wasn't also a singer and songwriter.

As well, there is rarely ever an original form of art - every great artist has either copied or stolen from someone else.

Terry Pratchett, an author that I greatly respect and admire, straight up stole/paid homage to all kinds of pop culture movies and science and quotes - he dressed up those stories and made them his own.

Rap artists off all kinds will steal bars and hooks from one another all the time.

I guess my point is, at what point is it paying homage to something and at what point is it stealing? If someone truly made something original it would likely be rejected for being so obscure as to be offensive to "good taste."

what is your alternative to Gillete for shaving ?

Safety razor with any blade like Wilkinson, Feather, Gillette, etc. I personally have not found a huge difference between them, but I also shave immediately after getting out of the shower without any shaving cream which some people might see as psychotic.

I went to a safety razor years ago after getting into it on a shaving subreddit and have never looked back. I bought a variety pack for like $20 CAD of razor blades 5+ years ago and I'm STILL going through them.

Was my memory wiped or was the Star Wars sequel trilogy just that forgettable?

Reply in thread

I'd take your statement about Star Wars sequels being about death a bit further - they're about learning about the past and moving forwards (sometimes that means destroying the past to be able to move forwards).

My cousin was actually deeply affected by the sequels because the theme of the wiser, older generation passing on knowledge to a younger generation that was resistant to becoming the next leaders.

I thought the scene between Yoda and Luke in the Last Jedi perfectly captured the theme of the movies. I'll copy paste the quotes from IMDB:

Luke Skywalker: [Yoda appears as a ghost] Master Yoda.
Yoda: Young Skywalker.
Luke Skywalker: I'm ending all of this. The tree, the texts, the Jedi. I'm going to burn it all down.
Yoda: [Yoda summons lightning to burn down the tree and the Jedi texts. He laughs] Ah, Skywalker. Missed you, have I.
Luke Skywalker: So it is time for the Jedi Order to end.
Yoda: Time it is for you to look past a pile of old books, hmm?
Luke Skywalker: The sacred Jedi texts?
Yoda: Oh, read them, have you? Page-turners they were not. Yes, yes, yes. Wisdom they held, but that library contained nothing that the girl Rey does not already possess. [Skywalker, still looking to the horizon.] Never here, now, hmm? The need in front of your nose.
Luke Skywalker: I was weak. Unwise.
Yoda: Lost Ben Solo you did. Lose Rey we must not.
Luke Skywalker: I can't be what she needs me to be.
Yoda: Heeded my words not, did you? Pass on what you have learned. Strength. Mastery. But weakness, folly, failure also. Yes, failure most of all. The greatest teacher, failure is. Luke, we are what they grow beyond. That is the true burden of all masters.
