Are you going to try Meta's Threads?

No! - I'm not a dumbfuck. Mark Zuckerberg once said people who trust him with their personal information are dumbfucks. I have never had an account on any of his platforms, and never will. If something I'm using integrated with his products I'd just stop using it. Just no!

Your thoughts on The Orville?

The Orville is my favorite Star Trek franchise. It's canon - you can't deny it. The Orville revived the Star Trek Franchise and gave it a pulse. It's like blockchain. You can say it doesn't belong, but it will always be there and nothing can change that. It has great attention to detail and decent story writing with that original "there's a moral in this episode" that endeared ST in our hearts, something the newer ST franchises lack.

Customizing COSMIC: Theming and Applications

I've never wanted to "rice" my Pop!_OS, but I think I've been disappointed that Gnome couldn't add some simple changes like the following from COSMIC without installing third party software.

Beyond changing from Dark to Light mode and choosing an accent color you can change the application background, interface text palette tint and neutral palette tint. You’ll also be able to choose one of the three styles for the corner radii used throughout the interface and set an interface density.

Finally! Notifications can happen where you want, and they're not connected to the calendar. This is a massive win for me. Gnome's is really annoying being top center and dropping down into your work. I've always turned off 95% of notifications. If I can have them bottom left or right I will love that.

The notifications applet has been integrated into COSMIC DE! Unlike in Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS, notifications exist in their own applet, separate from your calendar.

COSMIC Skies of a Colorado July

Here's a little taste of the pre-alpha COSMIC DE. Tiling is working great and stacking has been introduced. I've got four Alacritty windows in the left stack. Running from left to right a watch (ss) , the Helix editor, cmus player, and Felix file manager TUI. COSMIC is utilizing my ZSH config and autosuggestions along with autocompletions working great. The right stack is running Firefox, Librewolf Flatpak, Nautilus and COSMIC settings. Resize is working as expected too.

Pop is so boring (in a good way)

I know right, a real snooze fest! Pop!_OS is so boring I installed it on all my business machines. I've had a good five years of boring old rock-solid performance. With Pop!_OS on seven machines I feel confident that my evenings and weekends will be relaxing, unlike my experiences with many other distros. I get tired, stressed and burned out on operating systems that you are continually fixing and configuring when you're trying to get things done. I'd even go so far as to say Pop!_OS is good for your health. It can lower your blood pressure and has been proven to stimulate your creative flow. The zen-like peace of mind that one gets from using Pop!_OS should be registered with the FDA. It's like an opioid mixed with a cortisol blocker!

I'd rather have a "Would you like to hide all Sports related Content?" button than a "Would you like to hide all NSFW content?" button

YES! A hide sports button sounds amazing. Including car sports of course.

And a hide Hentai/Manga/Anime button. I don't understand its popularity.

A hide Games/Gaming/Gamer button including PS1-7, Xbox, Playstation etc..

Definitely a hide Furry/yiff/fetish button.

A boobs/celeb/shoes button

A religion button.

People can look at whatever they like, but it would be amazing of my block list could be reduced from a thousand to a couple. The brilliant thing about federated instances is also one of the most annoying. If you block something on lemmy.world you likely have the same community on lemmy.ml or many of the other instances. Blocking the exact thing five times is tedious.

What's your most favorite android games right now?

My favorite Android game has always been, and still is, OSMOS. It used to be in the play store. You can still get it on Android from Hemisphere. There's also iOS, Ipad, Steam (for Linux), OS X and Windows versions. I love this game so much I keep an ancient 7" pad with Marshmallow 6 offline just for it (Because I had the original on it - You don't need an ancient device).

*Permanently Deleted*

I was way ahead of most people moving away from Reddit. Spent about two years there, but left after being unjustly censored, limited and manipulated by the Reddit mods. Their actions, decisions and influence are often nothing more than personal vendettas. Haven't logged in there for a couple years now and haven't missed it at all.
Are we actually surprised though? It's just another monolithic corporate data leech that abuses member's trust and privacy.
The CEO isn't actually worried about the blackouts. He thinks they'll weather the boycotts easily. He thinks most people will come back. It's my hope that it dies, crashes and burns. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zL0yFvkLMQc

As we move into Web3 I hope people wise up and take control of their own personal data and NOT hand control back over to these contemptible and detestable corporate sites. Don't fall for crap like the Metaverse - It's still a corporate attempt at conveniently taking control of your Web3 identity.

Curious about COSMIC - News and screenshot #2

Reply in thread

The technical answer is that COSMIC is a desktop environment, and like any other desktop environment you can install it on top any Linux distribution that supports it. Meaning it should be technically possible to install on an existing 22.04, or maybe 24.04 Pop!_OS. But here's the tricky bit, and nothing is concrete yet. COSMIC DE might be getting released on a new Pop-core which will not be what already exists. In that scenario a fresh installation would likely be necessary. So to answer your question - I'm not sure how that will roll out just now.

I will say this. After using and watching Pop!_OS development for five years now, whatever System76 release will be awesome. It simply has to be as they're a hardware sales company and need a stable, secure and functional OEM operating system.

The ability to choose the default file manager in COSMIC would be amazing

Pop!_OS being an OEM for System76 probably means they will definitely release with a file manager GUI, but I wouldn't care if it had none at all. You should be fine to swap out the default if what you want is a Flatpak though. Alternatives include any terminal TUI like Felix and any Rust apps developed with Iced or Slint, which I would be in favor of.
Both Nautilus and Felix currently work well in the pre-alpha COSMIC, but navigating in and working with the filesystem in terminal is a breeze when set up nicely. Bash is great, but I prefer Z shell (Zsh) with auto-suggestions, auto-completions, autojump and a stack of aliases and scripts.

VPN not working [SOLVED]

Sounds like you might have a firewall issue. Check the status of ufw. sudo ufw status

Mullvad's app is excellent as far as VPN clients go. Normally I won't use them and prefer using a config like @slippers suggested or just use a router. However, Mullvad's app is the exception and works well on all my business machines with Pop!_OS. You should check the killswitch status. Another thing you could try is enabling "Quantum core". One of my staff was having issues and that bypassed whatever was happening. It's super quick as an added benefit.
