World Cup tourists aren’t leaving tips — and restaurants are fighting back

Reply in thread

In addition to what @[email protected] has already said… a lot of restaurants also have a tip-out system, wherein the servers have to pay a % of each table’s sales into a shared tip fund to cover bussing, bar staff, the hosts and sometimes kitchen staff. So while I completely agree with the premise, it’s not great to cost your server money when they are often on $2-3/hr.

The last time I was a server in the US we had to tip out 3% of sales to others, but I’m not sure what the industry average is now.

health care in North America

Reply in thread

If price were the only issue sure, but there are a many other problems - oh you went to the ER? Or you picked a specific hospital/surgeon for something? Too bad, this one doctor isn’t in network.

You can only have a specific version of a medication because another is ineffective or you have an allergy or adverse reaction? Well that sucks, your insurance only covers this one type.

Your doctor ordered a specific set of tests? Your insurer can decide that they’re not medically necessary and overrule your doctor.

And so on… when the required amount of regulation is so vast that it touches every part of the system because it is just that bad…. Surely universal healthcare is the better option at that point?

Italian woman facing removal from UK despite ‘permanent residency’ card

The whole settlement scheme has been a disaster. uKVI has historically been a truly terrible organisation. I personally have been given false information from them on more than one occasion so this doesn’t surprise me in the slightest.

Why is extraordinarily ridiculous though, is why someone from the EU that already had permanent residency wouldn’t just have that acknowledged or have automatically moved onto the new scheme. UKVI will already have her details on file electronically with biometric enrolment data.

Anything to make peoples lives miserable, in yet another clear implementation of government policy. The cruelty is the point.

How do you communicate "sorry, my bad" when you make a mistake while driving?

Flash the hazards twice, also works as a thank you for letting me merge in or whatever, it’s pretty common in the UK.

I have gone to using a single hazard flash when people are in front of me as well instead of flashing high beams(reserved as the head tap equivalent for cars) because I hate when people blind me at night trying to thank me… high beams are way brighter than they used to be.

What is something you can see, hear, smell, etc., that others can't?

The god-awful taste of sugar substitutes.

A lot of people can taste things like saccharine I think? But I can taste any fake sugar, even when there is a mix of real and fake sugar in the same thing.

Aspartame/acesulfane is definitely the worst of them all, but sucralose, stevia… all of them taste like medicine kind of.

I can also taste the difference between cane and beetroot based granulated sugar. Beetroot sugar is sharper.

What’s one thing you’re trying to be gentler with yourself about?

Rest… and how demotivated I am at work.

I am 100% one of those people that other folks think is “ambitious” but honestly I just say what I think people want to hear about my career aspirations or whatever, and I don’t seem to understand what level of effort folks put into their work so I just burn myself out by trying to keep all the damn plates spinning.

This general issue mixed with some recent comments by our CEO as well as overall policy things just makes me hate my job. I joined this company because there was a huge focus on people first. It was a great culture with high camaraderie and management seemed to care (or at least to do things that made it seem like that), but over the last two years it’s like the claws of our US overlords have really dug in and we are now America-lite* as an entity.

So I am tired, and I am tired of pushing myself to this point and yet I can’t seem to stop myself. When I am working I don’t feel like it’s acceptable to let anything drop, so instead I am just irritable and miserable when I finish work until I have a good bit of *dissociation time*

*nb I am American but have lived in the UK for 13 years now and this particular regression toward American-style workplaces really gets to me.

what exercises work for you to avoid back pain?

As others have mentioned, core exercises will be key here.

Some more traditional non-core exercises like squats and deadlifts will be engaging your core muscles (and a reminder that your ‘core’ is your whole trunk/body and not just your abs!), but you can progress this along with additional core exercises.

As someone that sits a lot for work, I really like to do ‘supermans’ and variations of them, a basic one is to lie flat on your stomach with arms and legs extended, then raise your arms and legs off the floor. You can hold, do them as reps, “swim” in the air, add in some pulls (like an overhead row if you have a resistance band or something you can attach in front of you).

Yoga has been mentioned below, but I would add Pilates to the list as well, there are plenty of core exercises to go at.

Varying effect of meds

Not sure of your situation, but hormones also have a pretty significant impact on med performance for women, so for me when I am like a week out from my period I am both way worse ADHD symptom-wise and my meds are less effective so that’s fun.

I can’t imagine using the official Reddit app shudders

I’m still not sure I’ve got my head around the whole fediverse thing. I’ve ended up with a login on both desist.uk and Lemmy.world but I guess it could be worse 😅
