Morning dudes

I’m very happy to see a casualUK replacement for the suddenly redditless. I literally signed up to Lemmy about 10 minutes ago so I’m still feeling this thing out!

I’m looking forward to arguing about crisps with you all 🙃

Welcome, glad you're here 🙂

(Salt and vinegar are the best crisps)

Hard agree, they're terrible 🤮

5

Only after a full family-size bag, where you've burned the taste buds off your tongue, can't taste anything but salt, and have a case of the crisp-sweats. Up to then they're just grand.

1
feddit.uk

I concur, but what type of salt and vinegar?

  • Discos: Not as good as they were when I were a lad.
  • Walkers: Consistently ok.
  • Kettle: Good if you are feeling a bit posh, but the balsamic vinegar can be overwhelming.
  • McCoy's Ridge Cut: Excellent.
7
lemmy.fmhy.ml

The co-op own brand version of kettle are the best flavoured salt and vinegar crisps I have had in a long time as I have found most other brands taste more watered down these days. Don't know if that is changes or my taste buds getting old but they hit the spot!

5

Agree with co-op salt & vinegar being the best (I do like mccoys too) - don’t really like walkers any more, the crisis are too thin!

McCoys salt and vinegar for sure.

But I do enjoy a Walkers Prawn Cocktail too

I can confirm when you leave the UK, prawn cocktail are the ones you miss the most.

Plus, you can't explain to people because the name itself makes them sound fuckin disgusting

5

Expat here, and I just got back. I brought back Quavers, Nik-Naks, Wheat Crunchies, Monster Munch, Space Raiders,... but I didn't bring any sort of prawn cocktail.

Not even Skips. Am I even British anymore??

1

McCoy's are great. I'd usually go for a supermarket brand "finest" standard / kettle crisp.

Fond memories of salt and vinegar Discos giving my mouth chemical burns as a child 😂😭

3

Discos start hurting if you have too many. They give you tiny cuts and then load up the salt to aggravate them.

McCoys are my favourite.

2

Also agreeing that co-op are the best, but if you find the vinegar in Kettle overwhelming then maybe it's not for you, they are very vinegary.

Crisps are not worth having unless they're salt and vinegar.

2

M&S own brand salt and vinegar are the closest I have found to my all-time favourites which no longer exist…

(Tom’s foods vinegar & salt from my childhood)

2

I've become partial to those Thai Sweet Chilli crips. nomnom

3
lemmy.world

Aldi's beef mega hoops taste like beef Monster Munch and have better texture.

Because you asked.

Is it controversial to say I'm a big fan of Walkers Baked Ready Salted? 😅

Hi. I had first in-person meet up with my new friend I made on an app yesterday. I just moved to this country so I was (am?) in need of new friends. Making friends as an adult is freaking hard but it's really rewarding once you actually connect with someone.

19

That's awesome! I've been in a similar situation before and it really is difficult, well done for putting in the effort because a lot of people just give up and complain about it instead.

6
lemmy.world

I must have clicked on RIF about twenty times yesterday as I kept forgetting it's gone forever - everyone I have spoken to IRL seems to use the official Reddit app (which was even more of a shock), so I think this Reddit play is going to work exactly as intended

(P.s. fuck Spez)

15

The trick is to put your Lemmy app of choice (or the mobile site) in the same space you had RIF. Make that muscle memory work for you!

9

I can’t imagine using the official Reddit app shudders

I’m still not sure I’ve got my head around the whole fediverse thing. I’ve ended up with a login on both desist.uk and Lemmy.world but I guess it could be worse 😅

Off for burgers at lunchtime with #1 child, can't wait. Have to take a month's worth of garden waste to the tip this morning as they're striking and not collecting. Going to have to try to get a full wheelie bin in the car...

12
feddit.uk

I love a good burger, but the wife isn't so keen. Burgers are now a treat for me.. Honest Burger is my go-to chain for 'It's pretty good'.

I put the green (it's green for garden waste here) bin out on Friday and they emptied it, which I consider a win given all the local politics about strikes and stuff.

Your other post suggests you're in or around Bristol. We're going to Milk Bun in Clifton, I hear it's great.

Edit: burgers are brilliant

3

I don't get up Clifton much - I haven't tried there yet. I'll need to remember it next time I am in need of a burger. Thanks!

2

One's a lot more interesting than the other. But mainly ordered in age rather than rank.

Recently I was at the dump an the guy in front of my had two full wheelie bins in his car. I thought he was the smartest person ever until I saw him try to 1) maneuver a full bin out of the car and 2) upend the bin into the skip.

3

Emptied half manually, then picked up and tipped in the rest. Was an absolute bastard, especially with an unknown pain in my hand from falling off my skateboard last weekend. I couldn't empty the rest by hand - the stuff at the bottom has been there for a month and started to compost.

4

Had my first ever Wendy's (Camden) recently. Burger was fucking lovely. Chips...indifferent.

3

I was half thinking making a burger today. I quite like Jamie Oliver’s burger recipe.

Sympathy upvote for wheelie bin wrangling. Awaiting the my car smells like compost post.

2

I tied the bin lid down and I think I got away with it. Tried not to think about the thousands of insects that were probably trying to get out on the ten minute journey.

I ate too much pizza yesterday and stayed up until 2am gaming.

I am going to spend today designing watch faces for my new eInk watch. This will be a challenge as I'm a terrible artist and an even worse C++ programmer.

Luckily ChatGPT is slightly better than me 😀

10

Hi, I'm new here. Another reddit refugee. I used to use sync and now am waiting for sync for lemmy. Long live sync!

I'm having a mostly quiet Sunday. My sister and her sons are visiting from the states. It's been pretty full on with them here. They're visiting Osborne house today (her older son is a big fan of Queen Victoria - go figure) and I've ducked out and am playing zelda and listening to music.

Just chiming in to note another Reddit migrator. If you are on iOS, the Memmy and mlem apps are very good and improving rapidly.

Try the wefwef app. It installs differently to normal apps as it’s web based but it’s the closest to Apollo. It’s actually pretty incredible and I’m also trying Mlem and Memmy.

Thanks! I might have another look. I briefly tried it just in Chrome but found that the spacing wasn’t very efficient. Do you use it in Safari on iOS?

1

On thé web view go to settings and download the ‘app.’ It works much better than the safari view imo

2

I went to the URL in Safari on iOS and just followed the instructions about sharing the link to my Home Screen. It kind of just did it’s thing then. Played with the setting to get it how I like it (compact view) and it says I’ve got the app installed. Working great

2

I’m using Memmy currently. The devs have done a decent job and are improving things very quickly.

Dark (or preferably amoled) mode is the way God intended apps to be viewed.

I hope your migraine passes soon mate

5

Morning! Early start today, off to south London to see a potential new buddy for our 3yr old Siamese boy. His Savannah brother from another mother has been missing for a few weeks and it's not looking hopeful that he'll be coming back.

I'm completely heartbroken 💔 but Frank's so unhappy, missing his friend in fuckery.

We're going to see a nearly 2yr old Abyssinian, looking for a new home as his staff are having to relocate to Singapore and can't take him with them - even if they could, he'd be going from central London (albeit with a park over the road) to a high rise flat in Singapore.

They're looking for a rural space for him, which we can definitely provide.

I just hope we're doing the right thing.

8
sideonereply
lemmy.world

It took me way too long to work out you're talking about cats, and not an actual Siamese boy...

9

We don’t usually even thinking about getting a new cat for several months after one dies. We recently had our youngest (3 years) get knocked over on the road and this is the first time that we’ve ever considered “replacing” a cat because our 5 year old missed her so much that she became Ill with the stress.

She’s ok now but she’s a lot more clingy than she used to be.

I hope you find your other cat. We know someone who lost theirs and found him after what must have been six months so there’s always a chance.

Good morning. I was demolishing a floor yesterday and my muscles are expressing their unhappiness in no uncertain terms. I should have stretched properly but the beer after hard work was just too tempting.

8

Similar, I was cutting hedges yesterday and this morning it feels like I've been bench pressing a bus. Need to go out for a run though. At least it's sunny out!

3

Hmm, interesting more comments on this thread than the other place
I've got a dodgy calf muscle, but hoping a walk will be good for it and loosen it up. It better not go the other way and cripple me.
Tis windy!

We did start earlier than them 🙂

As someone who has had calf issues since she was 25, I can highly recommend doing some purposeful stretches first. That one where you stand on the edge of a stair and let your heels sink down is a gamechanger.

I'm sitting here in my daughter's room, while she had an absolute banger of a meltdown. But upside is I'm taking the time to research what it would take to self-host my own Lemmy instance. I like the idea of my own personal instance that I can then federate through, rather than my account being tied to someone else's instance.

I tried last week with an oracle cloud free tier and a Lemmy easy deploy script. It didn't work but apparently the script has been updated now.

1

Good to know, I did read that the docker instance is a right pain to setup, but apparently there is a nice ansible script. Would be a good excuse to learn ansible. 😄

2

Cwtching on the sofa watching postman pat with my little boy…. Considering getting a second coffee but the kitchen seems far away.

Not a bad casual Sunday morning so far

7

Morning all! Still getting to grips with Lemmy and the various communities around the fediverse, but enjoying it all so far!

Not sure what's on the docket for the day, most likely a snall bit of tidying up around the flat, but do know I've got a sausage cassarole to prep for tea so that should be a good treat to look forward to!

7

Good morning, bit hungover poor grandma next door crappy daughter just left her kids in the playground and shouted at her mum to look after them for a couple of hours, waking the whole street up...

6
sh.itjust.works

Morning! Still getting to grips with the shift to Lemmy from Reddit but a week in I'm feeling much more at home. It took a while to find an app that felt like a good fit, but WefWef seems to be fitting the bill very nicely.

This morning is recovery after pizza and 80s movie night with friends.

6

A couple of obscure dark fantasy movies: Legend, which is an old Ridley Scott film with Tim Curry and Tom Cruise, and Ladyhawke, with Rutger Hauer and a very young Mathew Broderick. Cheesy but both surprisingly enjoyable!

1

Morning all

Completely stuck on the game Dude Where Is My Beer. It'll be today's challenge!

Also a Reddit exodus-er from the first blackout. Shame to see the third party app I use finally die.

6

Oooh it's nice to see this place getting some users finally. I've been here since the black outs.

In the time in between I've been learning to rubiks cube with my Reddit time and have now managed a solve in under 5 minutes.

Just rolled out of bed with achey legs because I went to the gym for an hour yesterday and then a run of a single mile. Turns out that's enough for my aging body to seize up.

5
lemm.ee

So glad to see one of my fav communities moving over to lemmy

5

Had some friends round last night. Watched the boxing and got drunk. Went to bed about 2am. Cat woke me up about 7 demanding food! Meows louder than an air raid siren. Climbed back in to bed now and browsing Lemmy. Been a busy week so just catching up with the latest posts.

4

Had a busy day yesterday and my knees aren't thanking me for going for a run. Think I'll make use of the balcony I jet washed yesterday to get my moneys worth.

4

We've had quite a few busy weekends recently which I felt bad about so yesterday I done a day of things the kids wanted to do, then swimming with them later this morning. They're having a great time, while I'm completely shattered!

3

Recovering after spending the day at St Pauls Carnival (Bristol) yesterday. I was out most of the day and into the evening. By the end there were rivers of piss running down the roads. It was a good day but I don't envy those tasked with the clean-up.

I had my ear plugs in and it was still super loud when near the sound systems. Some were great, some had so much bass it drowned out everything else. I don't understand how people can stand right next to the speakers (well.. I assume drugs).

Not sure what to do today, although I think dinner is going to involve jacket spuds.

3
kbin.social

Helllooo from kbin.social I suspect today is going to be a casual combination of mowing the lawn and playing Zelda with the teenagers on the big telly. Worse ways to spend the weekend.

... and I really must write that job application :)

2

I can sense your desperation to get that job application done 👍

Hopefully you can sense my envy

1

Just back from Switzerland after my exams finally ended. Time to spin up P4G for the weekend!
