Windows 10 refugees flock to Linux in what devs call their "biggest launch ever"

Reply in thread

Depends on what you feel lost about, if it is the basics in general then I would suggest you start of and read about the basics here https://labex.io/linuxjourney they write about the very basics in a very simple way. I think they did a good job, they start of with what Linux is, what distros are to commands from the most basics as how to navigate in the terminal to more advanced combinations. They also have vms where you can try out the commands if you haven't switched yet.

If it is a cheat sheet as in commands then i would say it is better to make your own of the commands you care about but you can start of by using other ppls list like this one https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/linux-unix/linux-commands-cheat-sheet/ but it can be overwhelming for you so use the linuxjouney first. Also it is very important to learn how to look up how to use the arguments in the terminal with man or -h to make it faster and less painful to use.

If you are lost about programs then there are a lot of good GitHub pages that links to useful programs and cli tools, you just need to search for awesome Linux list

Examples:

https://github.com/luong-komorebi/Awesome-Linux-Software You can use their web pages version too https://luong-komorebi.github.io/Awesome-Linux-Software/ https://githublists.com/lists/awesome-lists/awesome-bash

Here is one for distros https://github.com/kolioaris/awesome-linux-distros

Here is an example for customizing https://github.com/fosslife/awesome-ricing

When looking for programs is it very important that you know what distro you are on, what desktop environment (like kde, gnome, xfce) and what window composition you use (usually Wayland or x11, x11 is older and is more compatible).

So in short start of at https://labex.io/linuxjourney

Then look up distros here https://github.com/kolioaris/awesome-linux-distros

For new ppl do I think Ubuntu based is best because almost everything has a Ubuntu version, when you feel ready can you test out other distros. I haven't tried bazzite, I started of many years ago on debian (a few random ones like arch and mint) and then pop os for many years and now cachyos, I liked my journey but that doesn't mean it is correct for others.

I would suggest to have all of your data you care about on a separate disk or have automatic backup of it so you can break your os without care. And if you start customizing would I suggest setting up a GitHub repo and commit your changes everytime you like what you see so it is easy to go back if you regret something.

I hoped this helped on your journey, I didn't want to overwhelm you so I hope I kept it simple enough :D

bot casually stealing comments

Can someone explain to me the reason these bots exists? And why are they always so obvious, all of these bots pics has a girl in them and a very porno ad title kind of name? This bots picture was very mild (pretty normal even actually) compared to what I see in YouTubes comment section everyday.... They can be extremely pornographic.

Is this the new "Russian girl close to you" ad?

Denmark, Netherlands react to Trump's DEI ultimatum

Every time I read news about Trump I always wonder what his end goal is. Because he sounds so much like those end users who says unreasonable things like "you need to add/fix/change this" if it is done then they always comes back for more because they didn't get the end come they wanted and then it all turns out they wanted something that was reasonable (or not) but they demand changes that won't do that.

Is his end goal really getting more jobs?

And I wonder what kind of jobs he wish to create because a lot of Americans seem to have many weird jobs already like just standing in a corner pointing in a direction or taking care of your filled form by walking 3 meters to another person with it.

No need to be rude

I heard a radio segment about this but it was about expensive/premium brands like BMW, Audie and Ferrari. Apparently it’s a very psychological thing where driving an expensive car makes you feel entitled and you start driving like a douche, even if you know it will happen to you. This was many many years ago so I do not remember his name so do what you will with the info. But I do think there can be some truth in it, because power do corrupt and we have seen that happened many times. But I think you do need to have a special mindset to buy those huge trucks if you only drive them on asphalt.

But I can imagine looking down on everyone and taking up a lot of space makes them feel special/better than the rest.

It's Open Source!

I would say the best with open source is that if the devs do not have time to look at your request then you can make a pr and if they won't approve it in time then you can fork it with the fix, that is what lemmy.world did for example. I have also needed to do just that for a few packages. Also if the docs are too simplified then you can just check out the code yourself. It have helped many times.

Marriage over, €100,000 down the drain: the AI users whose lives were wrecked by delusion

I think this is both scary and very interesting. What kind of person do you have to be to become addicted like them? Is this the same as gambling addiction? Do you need a type of gene? Would this type of personality be receptive to hypnotize, cult, delusions about their idol and so on? Or is this something that can happen to anyone who is depressed and feel lonely? How did the llm even earn enough trust? In a cult is there a lot of ppl reaffirming so it is a lot easier to understand.

It is so hard to understand even tho I really want to. I have never cared about an object or idol/celebrate. AI can I never even take serious as a living beeing, the only emotion it triggers are frustration and how you feel about a tool that works as it should, so pretty apathetic. Do you need to be very empathetic towards objects? Like seeing faces in everything and get emotionally attached?

A lot of questions that I do not think anyone here can answer haha, but maybe one of them.

I walked all over the damn store looking for butter

I wish grocery stores (especially those you can also order from online) had a page where you could pick the store (if there are multiple) and then search for the thing you need and it had a number label that would be associated with the section it is in. This weird example from op would be: beer 10, butter 10, wine 10 etc without it being confusing because it isn't a category anymore and you only need to look in that section instead of looking like a lost kid running around in the whole store. Also filling up that big sign with just a number would be a lot easier to read from far away.

They can keep the categories if they stick to them, like meat, bread, snacks and so on so ppl who do not care about the number system can still kinda guess like today...
