What I love the most about Lemmy is that you can see the downvotes as well!

It's nice huh. And no karma stats personally. I love it.

I'm having my first disagreement with what looks like a possible CCP shill here. And their down votes are just not relevant, except to portray that we both disagree with each other. I really like it.

Only till the trolls arrive and have competitions to try to see how badly they can get downvoted without getting banned.

And when you have commented more on Lemmy than all your years on redit to hope to boost the subs/comms you love. Yes i was a lurker

I guess there's more of a chance someone will actually read it when you post here. What's disturbing me is how many of the comments on Reddit were just bots or farmers? I bet... Many

6

Oh yea I saw them in pretty much all of the replies. Many times they just copy pasted another comment. Sometimes was it pretty funny tho because it was so out of place haha

I've gone from a lurker across all other social media to an active... Fedizen? Fedizen. And I'm loving it™

15

It feels great not to just belong to a single site but to a federation of many other sites you can almost seamlessly interact with.

Feels so nice to show up to a post late and knowing you comment may still get read as opposed to the 3 hour window reddit felt like it had.

lemmy.world

I'm definitely reading it! I just joined, I'm going through all the instance's front page stuff. This decentralization is a neat concept. I'm commenting from a totally different server!

6

I have genuinely commented here on Lemmy today than I have on Reddit in the past 6 months, maybe longer. Trying my best to do my part, and honestly I find the atmosphere here a lot less intimidating, at least for now. It's fun to watch a new place grow!

In Jerboa I could copy the original comment with all the formatting, had to quote each line individually though, even if I selected all it just quoted the first

A common way I've heard it explained is to think of it like email. Say someone creates a gmail account and their friend creates a hotmail account. The gmail user doesn't need to create a hotmail account to send them a message, they just log into their gmail account and send their message to friend@hotmail and the magic of email takes care of the rest.

The fediverse works similarly. You create an account on one "instance" and can interact with pretty much every other instance. There's some nuance to it since it's more complicated than email, but that's the gist of it.

Do upvotes and downvotes federate similarly? If so, how does the protocol prevent vote rigging?

beehaw.org

I just upvoted you and saw the vote increase on two remote instances.

The instances don't seem to agree on your vote count, but both I was watching increased by one shortly after I upvoted you from beehaw.

Yes, looking at the docs linked from a sibling comment I see that upvotes and downvotes are part of the protocol, which is good to see. To prevent vote stuffing however, it does seem that all instances will have a database of upvotes and downvotes and who did them. They were never really secret anyway but it's interesting that any server can see this, it'll be an interesting development to be able to track vote brigading.

2

There's a bit of technical explanation in the Lemmy Docs here. I haven't looked into it at all but if you're interested, that seems to be a good starting point.

Yeah, it's a shame that the sarcasm gets overlooked by many. So it gets mistaken as a celebration of fascism.

Such is the bane of great parody, unfortunately.

First comment baby! Feels good to be off that other toxic site.

9

i'll join you from my own instance! i have one on lemmy.world too but i wanted to try the selfhosted route.

Realized I can actually choose a username I really like versus the one I made for Reddit when I was on a lunch break.

I'm doing my part! Ony own own instance! :)

To me, the best part of reddit was the comments section. Love seeing this site take off!

Thus begins the great reddit blackout of 2023

I think this is my third comment here. Still finding my way around. This is so different

7

As someone who's only lurked on reddit it feels good to be contributing

I'm just sad I can't tell people on reddit to come over here, even comments without direct links are being deleted by admins. I just mentioned that there is a star citizen community on lemmy in the subreddit and that comment got deleted without a trace.

7

You can make a picture and post it in a comment. Less convenient but works. Although I have a feeling that people who post about Lemmy too much may get shadowbanned.

Also, maybe your sub is deleting/prohibiting comments as a form of protest?

4

Don't go back when they pretend to give in, they'll just find another way to fuck it up for $$ later!

5

@WhoRoger Friends, I cannot believe I can post here from my existing mastodon instance account. What a technological marvel the Fediverse is.

I've made four so far! Creating them is easy; growing them is the hard part.

I gotta ask, after seeing your name a few times now. Is it literally just from the animal or is it an Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood reference? Or something else?

Love the simplicity in a lot of the usernames early on.

3

It's Oryx, an old villain from the game Destiny. Give god, the Taken King. Cool dude. I also love seeing people around here, and especially the more simple names. Figured I'd snag a cool, short one from my favorite community in case Lemmy really takes off!

3

Making my first comment here, at the start of the blackout. It's a sad time but hopefully something better can come out of it.

4

My first Lemmy comment!! Quite good so far, will check out Jerboa later

3

And I managed to have a top meme of all time for weeks. Nice to be an early adopter.

2

MY first comment was actually a witty retort that significantly elevated content quality of lemmy..

Happy to see that so many others are looking for Reddit alternatives. The lemmy is like Reddit+ and the idea of fediverse is so interesting. Really hope this spike in activity is sustained. Would be very interesting to see the community migrate platforms.
