Barney is a Borg from our imagination. And when he's tall. He's what we call a Borg sensation

My brother in Christ. You are in Ten Forward. The bar on the USS Enterprise in Star Trek Next Generation, which ran from 1987 to 1994, two years before Barney started.

I just asked my 22 year old niece if she knows who Barney is and she said “The annoying dinosaur? Of course.” She was born in 2004, so she was six when the show ended. Original episodes ran for 15 years, twice as long as Bluey has been on, not really a flash in the pan.

I think it’s ok to make references that children don’t get and I think it’s ok for adults to acknowledge their lifetime.

Also, my first thought was Expeditionary Force by Craig Alanson, since.. you know.. this is a sci-fi community.

It’s not super bad, like lilies. More of an irritant than a toxin. It could also be true queen Anne’s lace, which is also mildly toxic.

My initial thought was poison hemlock, but Costco wouldn’t sell that. It grows in ditches around here and not everyone knows you shouldn’t handle it or make bouquets, since it’s pretty. It’s the poison that Socrates drank for his execution.

Adults who can recall experiences of ultimate freedom to play in their own childhoods find it difficult to give their own children the same room for exploration [10]. In this context, research shows that if children are free to select the level of risk in their play activities, they will frequently choose a higher level than the guiding adult would predict and consider acceptable [11]. A lack of opportunities for risky and challenging play has negative consequences for becoming a healthy adult, such as learning to trust oneself, recognizing one’s limits, and knowing when it is better to ask for support [12].

My aunt used to say that children’s souls didn’t fully anchor into their bodies until they’d fallen hard on their heads for the first time.

She’s Hungarian, I don’t know if that’s like a cultural myth to make people feel better about dropping their kids or just her own thing.

women of Lemmy, how do you find cooling when you're on your period?

There is a gas station near me that has a whole side of the store closed in as a massive walk in fridge for drinks. I like to go in and take a really long time choosing a beverage.

Period swim wear exists, but I don’t understand the physics of it or trust it enough to actually go in a pool, but it would be fine in a natural body of water that doesn’t have a white bottom to showcase any under water leaks. Or just for water play outside the pool- sprinklers, hoses, water balloons, etc.
