  • I'm not vouching for any of these communities, check at your own discretion. Some of them are abandoned or inactive, so if you see one without activity that might be interesting, consider bringing it back to life and crosspost here. Communities with no content whatsoever aren't included.

  • Work in progress - let me know if you know of new communities that aren't in the list, or if you have other feedback.

(1) Kbin is a different network from Lemmy. Interactivity may be limited or delayed.

(2) These instances aren't federated with lemmy.world. To interact, you need to have an account on an instance that federates with them.

Important: Some instances may gravitate towards politics or philosophies different from your own. Inclusion of a health community of any instance does not mean endorsement of that philosophy.

Trump’s deep public health cuts hinder response to record US cyclosporiasis outbreak

…cyclosporiasis can take weeks to appear, which means officials in Michigan can’t tell yet whether their warnings have helped.

And the outbreak is spiraling amid sharp funding cuts to state and local public health departments after decades of chronic underinvestment.

What is cyclosporiasis, the parasitic illness causing ‘explosive’ diarrhea?

State and local health departments have suffered layoffs and hiring freezes amid funding delays, cuts and uncertainty, while federal agencies like the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have hemorrhaged staff and expertise under the second Trump administration.

Millions of people have also lost their health insurance through Medicaidand Affordable Care Act coverage, making it more difficult to track the true prevalence and spread of the parasite. Cases in five states – Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia – have been linked by the CDC, but the parasite, which can cause weeks of explosive diarrhea and vomiting

How Donald Trump Created the Worst Diarrhea Outbreak This Century

A big problem for trust in government is that high-quality governance is usually invisible. When the various agencies designed to protect the American people from all manner of threats are working perfectly, most potential disasters are detected and prevented before they happen. A lot of highly trained government workers do diligent and difficult work for little pay and less recognition, heading off crisis after crisis, and the ignorant swing-voting layman assumes that all his tax dollars are being squandered.

So one hopes that the voting public is learning a hard—or I should say watery—lesson about how important good government is, by way of the manifold consequences of Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Robert Kennedy hacking away at American state capacity. The latest consequence can be heard in the groaning emanating from thousands of bathrooms across the country: the worst cyclosporiasis outbreak in American history. It deserves a name, so I’m calling it the MAHA Trots.

Fast walkers in their 80s cut their risk of cognitive decline by half, a study finds

Crossword puzzles and brain teasers have long been touted as ways to keep the mind sharp. But a new study points to another strategy that may matter just as much: staying fast on your feet.

Researchers have found that people in their 80s who maintain an exceptionally quick walking pace, dubbed "super movers," are also far more likely to stay mentally sharp compared to their slower-moving peers of the same age.

i had orthodentist appointment, they confirmed that masseters are spasmed, tmj sux, and put with (?) jaw skeletal class 3, teeth placement is correct, since i take shitraline sertraline, we suspecting like bruxism is side effect right?,

orthodentist recommended try muscle relaxants, but they sux lol, i have overall muscle problems so yeah, said to my dumb psychiatrist, then he prescribed tolperisone which are east european underresearched yeah, okay i tried it, but got sick from first pill, so doesnt taken more, i tried tizanidine by myself, it was really cool, but tolerance developer very very fast in few days

Air pollution may cause childhood obesity by disrupting impulse control, study finds

Babies exposed to higher levels of neurotoxin more likely to have difficulty controlling impulses later, research shows

Exposure to common air pollution may cause childhood obesity because it affects children’s ability to control impulse, new first-of-its-kind peer-reviewed research finds.

Particular matter 2.5 (PM2.5) is a neurotoxin that has been linked to obesity, and Mt Sinai researchers say they have for the first time identified impulse control as a potential pathway. The study found that babies exposed to higher levels of PM2.5 during their first year of life were more likely to develop difficulties with controlling impulses later in childhood.

Those behavioral changes were then linked to higher body fat and higher BMI in children between four to eight years old.

Pioneer of ‘extreme male brain’ theory of autism now says phrase unhelpful

Prof Simon Baron-Cohen says his language was misunderstood and it is a myth that autistic people lack empathy

The scientist who pioneered the “extreme male brain” theory of autism has said he regrets characterising the condition in this way because the phrase lends itself to misunderstandings.

Prof Simon Baron-Cohen’s theory that autistic people tend strongly towards systemising over empathising has been hugely influential in shaping the popular perception of autism over the past two decades. The underlying science had stood the test of time, he said, but he now views the “extreme male brain” label as unhelpful.

“Some of those terms were very easily misunderstood and so I do regret that,” he said. “It can lead to simplistic headlines like ‘autistic people lack empathy’, which is not true.

“Some of that language, like male brain and female brain, I just don’t think it’s useful today.”

More than 100 passengers on US cruise ship sick from suspected norovirus

Princess Cruises vessel is docked in San Francisco for disinfecting in third outbreak for company this year

More than 100 passengers and about 23 crew members on a Princess Cruises ship fell sick from suspected norovirus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), marking the third outbreak to hit one of the company’s watercraft this year.

The Ruby Princess vessel set sail on 12 June from San Francisco, bound for Alaska and Canada, with a scheduled return on 2 July. More than two weeks into the journey, CDC officials received a report of an outbreak, which is defined by a threshold of 3% or more of passengers. Aboard the ship were 3,032 passengers and 1,144 crew members, according to the CDC.

The ship was docked in San Francisco on Thursday for disinfecting.

Norovirus is highly contagious and can induce diarrhea and vomiting. It can spread when tiny particles of fecal matter or vomit get into the mouth. Hand-to-mouth contact with contaminated objects can also facilitate the illness’s spread.
