Abbott agrees to settlement over closure of largest baby formula plant in the US

Abbott Laboratories will pay $385 million to resolve claims tied to an investigation of contamination at a baby formula factory in Sturgis, Michigan, the largest in the country, which led to the supply shortages in 2022.

Problems at the facility prompted a lawsuit by the Justice Department and recall of powdered infant formula at the facility.

The recall covered several infant formula brands, including Similac, and squeezed inventory that had already been strained by supply chain disruptions and stockpiling during COVID-19 shutdowns.

‘Tidal wave’ of Pfas being launched to satisfy AI industry, campaigners warn

Pfas companies are launching a “tidal wave” of forever chemicals production to meet demand from the AI industry, a campaign organisation has warned.

Despite alarm over the chemicals, which have been linked to cancer, a survey of the 10 biggest manufacturers found most had plans to increase production.

Many frame their investments around the “AI revolution”, because of the role Pfas play in semiconductor production and next-generation datacentre cooling systems.

CDC director’s ‘unusual’ silence draws scrutiny

Just a month into her tenure as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Erica Schwartz is missing in action.

The country is heading into respiratory virus season, and public guidance on COVID-19, flu and RSV vaccines has been muddled, at best.

The worst measles epidemic in more than 30 years continues unabated, while the Health and Human Services (HHS) secretary is downplaying measles deaths and openly feuding with a sitting governor.

Through it all, Schwartz has made no public appearances or remarks.

Former EPA officials: Trump is letting data centers make you sick

While tech oligarchs grandstand about the existential danger AI superintelligence poses to humanity, former Environmental Protection Agency officials say we should be worried about a more immediate threat to our health: the data centers that power those AI models.

The former EPA researchers, now working with the nonprofit Environmental Protection Network, are warning in a new report that since January 2025, Donald Trump’s EPA has embarked on a systematic weakening of pollution safeguards, permitting processes, inspection norms, and other guardrails—at least 30 different actions—that could increase the health risks associated with the data center boom.

There are currently about 3,000 data centers in the United States, and more than 1,500 new centers are in the planning stages. But as developers build out this vast, energy-hungry infrastructure, the country is losing the government regulatory safeguards that are needed to ensure that expansion is done safely, the ex–EPA officials say.

Food-borne illnesses, funding cuts and layoffs: Maha movement’s glaring limitations are now showing

Cyclospora in leafy greens, E coli in frozen blueberries, salmonella in jalapeños – multiple food-borne illness outbreaks in the US, alongside massive cuts to food assistance programs and to the federal agencies charged with food safety, are showing the limitations of the Make America Healthy Again (Maha) movement, experts say.

“The policies that we’re enacting are the exact opposite policies one might look to to help people eat healthier,” said Jessica Knurick, a science communicator and registered dietitian with a PhD in nutrition science.

We know how to prevent black lung, so why are workers still dying?

Silicosis is one of the oldest workplace hazards and public health experts have known for decades how to prevent it. Yet a new wave of workers, from Appalachian coalminers to Latino countertop fabrication workers, are developing and dying from the disease as industry fights new protections and regulators fail to defend the rules that could protect them.

Coroner releases details of infants who died amid growing Pennsylvania measles outbreak

The two measles-related deaths in Pennsylvania last month involved infants, and the virus itself caused one of the deaths, a Pennsylvania coroner confirmed Wednesday.

Lancaster County’s coroner, Dr. Stephen Diamantoni, said he told the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of his conclusions. CDC officials, however, have not said whether they will count either death as measles-associated, and the agency’s website still carries a disclaimer about them.

Ivan Miller died on Aug. 14 shortly after his birth of a ruptured spleen, Diamantoni said.

US FDA reports 22 cases of salmonella infections linked to broccoli sprouts

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Wednesday it was investigating a multistate outbreak of salmonella infections linked to broccoli sprouts, the latest in a series ‌of foodborne-illness investigations involving produce.

This comes amidst an ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to lettuce and separate salmonella outbreaks tied to jalapenos and alfalfa sprouts that have shaken U.S. consumer confidence, with many forgoing eating fresh produce or dining out at restaurants.

Very hot drinks may damage the food pipe and increase cancer risk

Regularly drinking beverages like tea and coffee at very hot temperatures increases the risk of cancer of the food pipe or gullet, known as oesophageal cancer, UK research suggests.

Researchers say the findings, from a study of nearly a million people, make this the largest to date to establish the link.

In the study, people who had their drinks "very hot" had around a three times higher risk of the cancer than "warm" tea or coffee drinkers - although experts stress the overall chances of developing this cancer are low.

Steaming hot liquid can damage the cell lining of the food pipe on the way down to the stomach.

Chemical industry backed laws in three US states to restrict use of air pollution data

As the US’s network for monitoring air pollution deteriorates, a Floodlight investigation has found that the chemical industry is going state-to-state to restrict one of the few options citizens have left for holding polluters accountable: low-cost air sensors.

Over the past two years, the non-profit investigative newsroom determined, lawmakers in Louisiana, Kentucky and Ohio have passed strikingly similar laws barring regulators from acting on air-quality data that communities collect themselves – unless it comes from Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-approved equipment that typically costs tens of thousands of dollars. Similar legislation has repeatedly been introduced in West Virginia.

Cyclospora outbreak followed years of declining FDA foreign inspections

A nationwide outbreak of cyclospora tied to contaminated lettuce has heightened safety concerns about imported food, while underscoring a longer-term trend: U.S. regulators are conducting fewer international inspections to catch contaminated produce before it lands on American plates.

Food and Drug Administration inspections of foreign food sites — including the Mexican farm linked to the ongoing outbreak — are down nearly 35% since 2019, the year before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to agency records reviewed by The Associated Press. The pandemic kicked off a wave of retirements and departures among FDA inspectors that continues to this day.

Even before COVID-19, the agency had long failed to hit its congressionally mandated targets for international inspections. And recent staffing cuts, reorganizations and other upheavals under Donald Trump could mean even fewer inspections in the years ahead, according to former senior FDA officials.

1 in 5 youths targeted by online sexual abuse, UNICEF finds

A survey of around 21,000 young people by the UN's agency for children, UNICEF, has found that online sexual abuse of minors is on the rise.

The internet is not a safe place for unsupervised children and young people — by now, that's common knowledge.

Social media platforms are adept at tweaking their algorithms to ensure users of any age remain on their sites. To do that, they often disseminate content that can be dangerous and upsetting for young people.

Studies regularly find a connection between what's known as doomscrolling and a higher risk of psychological problems in the young, including suicidal thoughts. And some of the latest trends in video creation on platforms like TikTok directly endanger the safety of users.

Epinephrine allergy injections recalled over ‘particulate matter,’ including glass

"Particulate matter can cause blockage and clotting in blood vessels," according to the recall notice.

Pharmaceutical manufacturer American Regent has recalled three lots of Epinephrine Injection, according to a press release from the FDA on Thursday. Consumers reportedly complained about “leaking and cracked vials,” which led the company to investigate and find particulate matter such as nylon, cellulosic, acrylic, polyethylene, and glass.

“Particulate matter can cause blockage and clotting in blood vessels, which can cut off blood flow to vital organs, lead to a life-threatening blood clot in the lungs (pulmonary embolism) and cause permanent organ damage or death,” according to the press release.

“Additionally, these particles may cause local vein irritation, inflammatory reaction, aggravation of preexisting infections, and allergic reactions. Additionally, cracked vials can compromise the integrity of the container resulting in loss of sterility and potential contamination which can pose a serious risk for patients.”

Patient lived with world's first pig kidney transplant for nine months before getting human organ

The transplant lasted 271 days, the longest dialysis-free survival after a pig kidney transplant in a living human, as well as the first transition from pig-to-human kidney transplantation.

A man with end-stage kidney failure was kept off dialysis for nine months after being given a genetically modified organ from a pig.

The world-first procedure was carried out by the US-based Mass General Brigham academic centres and hospitals, which said the transplant was intended to be temporary before a permanent human donor could be found.

It marks the longest dialysis-free survival after a pig kidney transplant in a living human, as well as the first transition from pig-to-human kidney transplantation.

Trump administration stalled a survey of PFAS in wastewater, former EPA officials say

The Trump administration has stalled a study that would help regulators understand which industries dump harmful forever chemicals with their wastewater, according to two former agency officials who were involved in its development.

A public notice shows the first of its kind survey of wastewater treatment plants was submitted to the White House for approval nearly two years ago during the Biden administration — a far longer wait than is typical.

Many wastewater treatment plants receive PFAS-contaminated waste. A nationwide survey of hundreds of plants would help identify the source of that PFAS and could inform new regulations to limit their spread, according to Robert Wood, director of the engineering and analysis division in the EPA’s Office of Water before his retirement in 2024.
