State Fair was going on across the street from one of my old places and a vendor came in for his first meal of the day and a few beers. He realized too late that someone had picked his pocket on his way so he was literally $2.15 short on his bill.

It was tragic. He lost the thousands of dollars he'd made that day. I told him not to worry about it, I'd pay his bill. Obviously I made out great that night with the fair going on so karma dictated I do at least that much.

He said ok well when do get off? I told him I was here till bar close but not to worry about reimbursing me. He left. I assumed I'd never see him again but he did come back and asked me to come outside. I grab the bouncer to escort me out and he had one of these massive granite lawn ornaments. You know. The ones they half polish and engrave with your name or "Welcome" and you put them at on your porch or by your driveway. He tipped me a 300 lb of granite engraved with "Home Sweet Home" that usually runs you $600-1000.

Leave us out of it rule

I don't know who did it. But every patron yesterday at my bar who was spouting off or saying enough is enough, or what is this world coming to, yada yada yada were all real quiet about the whole thing today.

It was a blessed night. Busy. My body is screaming at me. But there was no political talk. Everyone was behaving themselves and besides the one dude I had to kick out yesterday showing up again, it was all around much better.

It almost hurts restraining myself from saying "where's all that shit talking now? Enough is still enough, right!? RIGHT?"

But when I'm working, I'm working. Maybe one day I'll get to be the drunk idiot.

Great. We all say this about the service industry, too. So since farming is your life blood you think its hard and people need to understand.

By that logic, everyone should be drafted for many different vocations to gain perspective on other people's careers.

Edit: Also it seems she's implying that someone else will pay the wages if she wants a draft. She wouldn't have to rely on imported employees if she payed a living wage to begin with.

Uproar as EU Parliament declines to hold minute of silence for Charlie Kirk

So I'm an American. I'm not understanding when this moment of silence was supposed to happen. Usually an event or a game we care about, this might happen for someone truly influential. I was out of the know so I went to learn.

What the MEP(whatever tf they are) was asking, is that the European Parliament take a minute of silence during their Plenary.

A plenary session or plenum is a session of a conference or deliberative assembly in which all parties or members are present. Such a session may include a broad range of content, from keynotes to panel discussions, and is not necessarily related to a specific style of presentation or deliberation.

Would US congress or senate take a moment of silence for a social influencer on either side of the spectrum for any other nation?

That is a rhetorical question. Nice try, but this is only "news" on social media where nobody would have known or cared about it if someone didn't post about it.

Our own government won't even do it. Football season is starting fresh and they didn't do it. Why the fuck would another nation give a shit???

It sat in the parking lot at work until my boyfriend/ex could come in his pickup.

Oh yeah, and it took 2 cooks and my ex to get it in the bed. To this day I have no idea how my patron got it over there in the first place.

Ignorance is bliss

I actually saw an ad for Lemmy on reddit and here I am. Figuring out enough to make an account was worth it. They should do more ads.. or maybe not. We don't want too many of them coming here. Im still trying to cleanse my brain of the juice I drank.

Firstly I'm very sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine what that must feel like. I hope you don't take this the wrong way because I doubt you're as 'gross' as you think you are. (We're our own worst enemies) But, what if you are gross? Why does it only matter to you that you think others would think so and not the other way around, as well?

Why not just embrace it for a bit and maybe encounter someone who adores your gross? What one person finds gross, another will love.

You have options.

A) You can seek out people to meet and date while thinking you're gross and I can almost guarantee you your self esteem would be more of a turn off than anything that you may personally think is a turn off. Low confidence is a huge factor in attraction.

B) You can seek out people to meet and date while thinking you're gross and you attract someone who preys on your low self esteem. They will encourage you to improve and the change will only be their image of improvement. It won't be you. It won't be authentic improvement. You'll further lose yourself. Your validation and self worth will be wrapped up in a cycle of emotional abuse that will take just as long to recover from as your past loss did.

C) You can force yourself to embrace the idea that you're gross anyway so why not find someone that is ok with that. Sort of a 'come as you are' mentality. Why change just so you can attract someone who'll finally love what you pretend to be? Instead, rock up anywhere and just BAM, "Deal with it &$&-$&#&#'s. I'm here, love it or hate it"

Honestly, Hun. It's just so unrealistic to think there aren't going to be people out there that will not vibe with you no matter what you do. You could be a 10/10 celeb with all the money and there will always be someone out there that can criticize something about you. The beauty of the human condition is that we're all so different yet we're still all quite similar in that we all want to be accepted. It's daunting but also exhilarating to accept that you will not please everyone, you will not be loved by everyone. You will not be everyone's special snowflake. You are your own worst enemy if you think that's ever possible.

D) You can go on a journey of self improvement. Why do you think you're gross? Work small improvements into your routine that you, personally want to improve on. Tiny manageable habits at first, for example, getting a decent haircut and asking the stylist for a simple ways to maintain it and style it.

Setting a timer for 20 minutes and straightening up your living space. Every other day or three at first. Stop when the timer goes off if it burns you out or keep going if you've gotten in a groove. 20 minutes isn't long so it's not as daunting as planning a whole deep clean day that could overwhelm you. You can still get more than you expect accomplished it 20 minutes. Then over time you can increase that to 20 minutes every day or an hour every other day or so. Adjust it to your own personal 'timer'.

However you go about that is up to you, the limitations of resources available to you and your own expectations of yourself. Those were only off the top of my head examples but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

Take time to identify that "why". Why do you think you're gross? What are the most simple baby steps you can take to improve them? Start small and work up from there when you meet your own expectations.

I will always tell you to go with (C) and (D) and blend to find your own happiness whether it's with someone else or just yourself. C is a more realistic mentality to have in a world that forces unrealistic expectations on you. D will reinforce that mentality in the way that's best and more realistic for you. Work to become the person you want to be and then shrug off your detractors and allow the rest of the world and anyone who likes you to meet you half way. When you find yourself attractive, when you are content even while you acknowledge your imperfections, you will attract people that want to be with who you are not what they want you to be.

I can't shut off my phone, find the flashlight, set an alarm, reset my wifi anymore since they pushed through the AI update on this phone.

Interesting enough, when I adjusted everything to a way that helped, my phone finally shut down and reverted everything back. 'Spose I have to jailbreak my phone now? I'm so out of the loop on tech now that I won't even know how to get my PC up to date when I finally have time to because I'm always working. I used to be so good (not really) but enough so that I could at least learn on the fly. Now I know I'm doomed. I can't even figure out how to get into my account to upgrade my internet. I've spent hours that I don't have calling and emailing.

I got one more year of working my ass off. Once the girls graduate I'm fucking off to help my ma and pops through the rest of their years and I'll get back into gaming and fun stuff. Ill have so many fucking questions for yall when I do.

Less than a year. I love my kids but I can't wait to slow down a bit and actually enjoy life.

Most American headline

This is a little different but it sticks out.

My baby brother was born in 91 and when he eventually got into kindergarten one of his teachers flagged him for his speech impediment. He'd pronounce his P's as B's.

He was 5 and talked a mile a minute before he was two. He just couldn't quite get the hang of that one part.

My parents weren't worried. We were all helping him. My other brother and I were 6 years older than him and we we're latchkey kids by the time I was 10.

My parents worked second/third jobs and second/third shifts rotating to make everything work for us. We barely saw them both at the same time.

I remember my Ma, and even Pops, being pissed as fuck and our chores and cleaning day was ramped up for a month or two, and all us kids had individual therapy sessions where they grilled us with questions we didn't understand because the school call CPS on them because they wouldn't (read: couldn't) make after school speech therapy work with their schedules and they knew he'd learn on his own eventually anyway. They just made my parents lives that much more stressful in that time.

This was over 30 years ago now and I have my own kids, and bonus kids even! I have my own stories I could tell but this is the absolute worst because I saw how much it stressed out my overworked parents. My brother is a functioning member of society who got over his slight speech impediment within the year, with our help but mostly letting him develop on his own time.

Meanwhile, us kids just considered it a matter of course that we wrap up plates and Tupperware after each meal. One plate for Gertie our nextdoor neighbor and whatever was left went to Jorge's family two doors down. We also learned how to mow the lawn only so the Grandma and Grandpa Hass, our other next door neighbors wouldn't have to anymore. They weren't actual family but they were to us. Jorge's family got all my and my brothers' hand-me-down clothes for his younger siblings, too. We didn't quite understand why at the time. It's just what you do. But yeah, make a struggling family's life that much harder with your performative concern.

Every support thread on Reddit is literally this now

I have to say I was having issues using reddit on my browser, it was a simple html issue where I couldn't break paragraphs, and I went to the support sub and they fixed it within 2 days.

I've had mods ban me for visiting, not commenting or posting, just viewing a post from another sub. I'm sure I got shadow banned plenty of times. I left because of the users. I disagreed that someone should Go No Contact with their dementia suffering grandpa for being racist and I felt like I was going crazy with the commenters who tore me a new one.

I stayed for while after because fuck, I'd been on reddit since it had r/all and not much else. I blocked out the one that got me to quit for good. I don't even want to check back in for curiosities sake because fuck them. I wasn't wrong in the slightest.

What would happen if every working class person told their co-workers how much money they make?

I've basically made a career out of serving and bartending. I took a 5 year break to do the stay at home mom thing but my first job getting back into it loved me at first.

It was a very interesting dynamic because it was my first job outside the city I grew up in but it was like riding a bike and I picked it up and immediately impressed them on the first night I was only supposed to be training.

Problem was was that they started firing my coworkers for the most questionable reasons. Then the trophy wife owner would show up to every court hearing for unemployment with forged signatures on their "policy handbook". A lot of underhanded tactics were used. One of my very good friends was fired on his birthday.

But everytime they'd give me a raise to placate me so I wouldn't leave. I could write a novel about that place because that's how my mind works but I won't.

Long story short, I responded to a server/bartender Facebook group at one point and mentioned my hourly for serving and for bartending. A coworker happen to see my comment and must have complained. (She couldn't have ever earned the raises I got even if I got them on merit, but she's a squeaky wheel and sits on a stool when her patrons need their beverages refreshed and plates cleared)

Boss lady made the mistake of messaging me that "it was agreed that you would not talk about your pay" which wasn't true. She'd whisper to me that I got another raise but never actually said not to say anything, and also- you don't get to dictate what I speak about on my own personal Facebook account.

I removed my comment just to unruffle feathers however I saved my boss's message and linked her the exact federal/state article that forbids her from reprimanding me.

That's when they tried to get me for minor shit. It was absolutely transparent what they were doing but I recorded everything and kept track of dates, times, incidents, message screenshots.

I saw the writing on the wall though and there was another place that had been wanting to poach me for a good while.

I was planning on fighting them earnestly for unemployment and take a month or two off before I started with the new place but they got desperate when their daytime bartender left so I got matching wages if I put my two weeks in and started ASAP so I did.

It was an absolute blessing. That next place treated me well and I was there for about 6 years until they closed their doors for good. Still miss them. I would have missed my old bosses too, if they didn't try to do dirty the way they did because I genuinely loved them and I wish there wasn't that bad blood. I don't regret anything though. They brought it on themselves being so two faced and underhanded.

This carbrain woman is running for Governor of Virginia

When you get into main cities, public transportation and walking becomes easier and it makes sense to tax drivers more.

I've been working in the backwoods/suburbs for over 15 years now and in the US, you're fucked. There is no way to get/keep a job without a car because there are no bike lanes, no sidewalks, and good luck trying to find a taxi/Uber. Your forced to take on the emissions testing, loans for junk cars because we can't afford new cars. A 15 minute drive is 2 hours on foot because there are no sidewalks, you have to cut through yards, which is "trespassing" and you could get shot, especially in the backwoods areas.

They basically make it illegal to NOT have a car. And that's a win for them because then they can tax the fuck out of you for owning one

Just how visible is your butthole to a gynecologist?

I just adore the little white line through "butt". It's ironically adorable and performative. That's like in the 80-90's when they'd censor movies on regular TV when they'd bleep over "hole" but not actually censor "ass".

Makes me giggle everytime.

Even trying to censor or substitute any word for the sake of it being problematic is just stupid in my opinion. We all know the word it is you're trying to say anyway. The substitute is just as triggering because it is the principle, the ideal, that is triggering, not the actual word itself.

Words have power when you give them power regardless of how vulgar, crass, or respectful you're trying to be.

I always think of Michael Scott and one or two of his great lines when I have occasion to think/discuss this particular point. Honestly, I won't even quote it. There're actually two that fit perfectly, one being a single quote and one being a dialog.

I'd have to censor myself because I'm still not quite sure of the rules and guidelines. I'd be hypocritical by censoring it. It would also just be fun to draw out The Office (US) fans by letting them do it for me.

AI is a tool. Just like any tool it can be used for constructive or destructive purposes.

When AI is replacing jobs that people can do while the people are still told to work harder, or replace art while people who create from nothing lose their profit, yes, people will be pissed.

It could be an amazing tool. The fact that I don't trust my art or my face using any AI is because of the people in control of that tool.

AI isn't the problem. The people that use it and have full control over it are.

How's your week been?

Eh. Everyone's crabby with the heat so I've had to break up too many bar fights. (Bartender). My boss especially, has been particularly chauvinistic and condescending so I stopped bringing up a dinner and beer for him (he lives above the bar). He was especially nice last night, actually complimented me in front of the patrons, and handed me $200 for all my hard work. So I made him his dinner and beer.

I swear, I teach drunks the same way I taught my 2 year olds when I was a daycare teacher. Lots of overlap.

So all around I consider it a decent week, especially since I love the heat.

Out of 10. Be specific!

If I got it at Goodwill for $.10, 6/10 because obviously that's a manufacturing dud but I'll give it a good home and use it when all the other utensils are dirty.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this pathetic waste in some Michelin star restaurant pretending it's trendy and they wasted hundreds buying 200 for $15 each. In that case -5/10.
