Everything Makes Sense Now

Tbf, Jesus is simply quoting from the Torah here to address some religious scholars that were trying to trap Him by asking “what the bestest most importantest commandment?” (That’s a direct translation from Greek, btw) His actual teaching is “love each other as I love you.”

Genetic study reveals surprising origin of Native Hawaiians

I live on O’ahu. We recently observed the 50th anniversary of the first voyage of Hokule’ia which is the first voyaging canoe built and navigated in the traditional ways, which was sailed from O’ahu to Tahiti and is still active, currently on a worldwide voyage. My kids got to go on board when it was docked as part of their school and there’s been lots of stuff available here about traditional navigation. It’s all truly amazing stuff. I chaperoned a field trip last year where we got to sit with one of the former crew members and it was like meeting an astronaut. Their descriptions of being in the middle of the ocean among the stars on that traditional ship is just breathtaking.

Do You Only Use Lemmy Or Do You Use Another Fediverse Thing And Why Did You Become A Fediverse/Lemmy Use?

Been on Mastodon for like four years. Ironically, I joined when during a major Twitter exodus, but I’d already left Twitter like two years before. I came here because I started to get tired of my content being used to make money for Mark Zuckerberg and I also noticed that “the algorithm” was primed to make me both addicted and angry all the time.

Came to Lemmy because I find it has more memes and humor than Mastodon and scratches the reddit itch (I left that platform about two years ago). It’s also a pretty good place to see news from around the world.

I also use Pixelfed, but rarely. I like to look at it when I have downtime but don’t want to be inundated with political posts and commentary. It tends to just be pretty pictures of flowers and mosses.

I love the Fediverse for being influencer-free social media. I really want to start a PeerTube instance for my own content (I’m a priest at a small Episcopal parish and I use streaming for our Christian education stuff and I find a huge disconnect with using a predatory and exploitative platform like YouTube for any kind of actual Christian material).

What the old press secretary is up to

The pre-born is a phenomenon known to the Bene Gesserit, but deeply feared. When a pregnant woman consumes the concentrated spice known as the Water of Life, the child gestating in her womb gains the gift of not only cognition, but an awareness of all memories of all ancestors passed down through the genetic heritage of the child. This child is known as pre-born due to the fact that they have begun to live a life—indeed many lives—before birth.

I’m assuming that this flier is from a group of serious Dune fans. It’s the only logical conclusion.

The correct burner

This whole thing reminds me of a time in high school (tiny Christian school) where a group of kids decided to start a “gang” called the “Yo’s” and my friends decided that there needed to be a rival “gang” they called the “No’s.” Us No’s wore brown paper towels in our back pockets to show our allegiance and we picked which hallway was “ours.”

Anyway, we had a mandatory assembly by the end of the day on the dangers of gang activity…

Rewatching a few TOS episodes awhile back, I could easily see Sulu as bi. I know Takei felt he was playing a “straight” character, but there’s a short bit in, I think, “The Naked Time” where he seems to be flirty with both men and women (early in the episode if memory serves).

Am I the only one low-key annoyed that the photo does not show a septum piercing (I understand it's called a "smiley" piercing--done on the frenulum of the upper lip)? It's Alysa Liu's signature look.
