Do You Only Use Lemmy Or Do You Use Another Fediverse Thing And Why Did You Become A Fediverse/Lemmy Use?
what fediverse services do you use
and why do you use the fediverse
and maybe optionally do you think that peertube is good
mine: i use lemmy and mastodon and i use the fediverse because i want to help open source not for the big platform's being bad

Only lemmy. And lurking Reddit at work because stupid memes are entertaining enough. But I never upvote anything there. (I know just the browsing is engagement but idc enough)
Why I use Lemmy:
I can subscribe to the selfhosting/(F)OSS mindset and like the idea of it.
I've used Mastodon since soon after Twitter was sold. Then when Reddit started killing third party client access I came here too.
I still use Reddit since it's just got the user base, but I'm trying. I run ![email protected] for the fun of it. (Just don't judge me by the least few weeks of upkeep; life has been life-ing. I try to find a few worthwhile news stories to link a day, ideally practical, but sometimes just interesting industry news.)
So, I jumped ship here to the old lemm(dot)ee instance because of the r€ddit API fiasco a few years back. I haven't looked back since. That led me to who knows how much longer down the line trying Mastodon. Still there, but I mostly just retoot things from the people I follow, who retooted another post... and follow The Internet Archive.
Mastodon for my twitumblr fix
Been on mastodon for awhile. I decided to make a lemmy account because trying to view lemmy from mastodon is annoying.
do you think peertube got the least of the migration waves that happened in i dont remember
I didn't know that was still running
I'm not sure what peertube is? So I guess so??
well peertube is like youtube but fedi
I only use mastodon and lemmy as far as I know
I'm on mastodon, lemmy, pixelfed, and loops. Also on Bluesky until the ads start.
Here to avoid ads and dark patterns. Fediverse is where interaction is done with users in mind instead of being the product. No nasty algorithms here.
Hell yeah.
Only on Lemmy, ever since the APIpocalypse on Reddit.
Just Lemmy. I never had Twitter so Mastodon probably wouldn't appeal, I had that problem with Bluesky.
More than anything Reddit just got annoying to use. I had no social media at all for a bit until I signed up for Lemmy, and I haven't decided if I like it yet. I do enjoy that there isn't a ton of content to endlessly scroll, feels healthier I guess.
I want Peertube to be good but the content just isn't there for me yet.
I came from reddit when the API thing shut down my mobile app of choice (RIP Baconreader). I tried lemmy and kbin right away, but couldn't really get into kbin. This is my only active social media account, unless you count an occasional steam review as social media. I have been using the jerboa app and it works nicely.
You match me aside that Mastodon is my most used followed by Lemmy and then Bookwyrm.
I also use mastodon, but I find that I rarely reply to people there. Am I thinking about it wrong, it's like whatever I write will be on the same level of visibility as top level posts, but everything mixed up in a big pile? I don't really get it.
I'm convinced you have to have a certain kind of brain to enjoy Twitter style content
It's simply unintuitive and confusing for like 10% of people. You have to like, relax your brain, and just accept that you're never going to read things in a logical organised tree. It really is basically a big pile, and you just see what you see, and don't think about what you're not seeing; if that makes sense. You cannot read everything in a thread and have to accept that and relinquish control
If this bothers you too much, it's just not for you; sorry 😂 personally once I realised that, I just gave up on that whole thing
Hah, that describes it well. I guess it works for more "announcement"-type posts that aren't meant to be discussed much. I can scroll through it and see that there's an upcoming conference, that someone wrote an article with a link to it, that someone made a pizza, that someone is upset over a recent event, etc. It's like reading the news.
Replies stack into a thread in chronological order so clicking on a post allows reading the full conversation. However if tags/mentions are included others who have subscribed to those will see those comments in their notifications and when they click on them it will again show the full conversation though scrolled to the specific message that triggered the notification.
I personally have a couple pinned tags that particularly interest me and then several more of lesser interest that just flow through my notification pane.
Same here. The only socials I have beyond this are Strava, a few Discord communities for tech support-type stuff and YouTube comments if that counts.
The Reddit API exodus was the canary in the coal mine for me. My entire technical/social life changed for the better after that.
Just Lemmy and Discuit. Dont go on Reddit anymore.
I have Piefed and Mastodon accounts. I prefer the "old reddit" style and the Piefed instance I'm on doesn't have it so I can't really get into it. I hate all these supposedly "modern" UIs yells at clouds.
Mastodon is different, it's fine, I guess. I check it out now and then. For many years I've tried to understand microblogging. I just fucking don't. I never understood Twitter, I've always found it obnoxious and inscrutable, even before the Nazi takeover. Mastodon seems like a less fleshed-out version of Twitter, so, again, I just don't get it. Lemmy? Upvote, downvote. Mastodon... favorite? bookmark? boost? Are replies threaded, I can't really tell. Does anybody see my posts at all? I'm following like a hundred hashtags and yet my feed is all from one news blogger I've never heard of. I just don't get it. So just every now and then I post a picture of a loaf of bread I baked or something and people seem to do things that cause my notifications to light up once or twice.
this was nicely written
I only use Lemmy. I tried Mastodon but it was too similar (in its principle) to Twitter which I disliked.
I came on Lemmy because I was starting to get tired of looking at Reddit : always the same stories and content too much filitered. Then the API thing happened so it was over for me, since I only used third party clients.
I stayed because tech and discussions.
I use Lemmy and Mastodon.
What's not to like? Actual human responses and nice people, no ads, no ai, and no algorithm deciding what I see.
I would argue that most of the responses are not from humans, and most of them are not nice. But no ads is a great feature! ;)
Depends on your instance. Most are human-moderated and gated in various ways.
Security doesn’t matter when the owners of the instances are the ones controlling the bots
You're really just reinforcing my point.
I’m sorry… your point is that is… a good thing?
Yeah, there's an even lower barrier of entry for bots on a federated model, by design. And people on here are definitely less nice than on reddit, the vibe is generally negative: most posts are rants, complaints or bad news. I miss the cat pictures sometimes.
That's a gewd kedi right there. Had to give up my cat 4 months ago, though fortunately one of my sisters was able to take her in so I still get to see her sometimes. Going to go upstairs and pet the cat of the sister I'm staying with seeing this.
That's an interesting experience. Sometimes I feel like my feed has too many cat pictures.
Here’s a cutie I bet you don’t see every day everywhere you go…
Maybe it's my feed. My front page never has relevant posts, no matter how I tweak my subscriptions, so most days I end up just browsing "all" sorted by most upvotes.
I mostly browse all as well. But one thing to try, is blocking communities and users. Block US news communities and you'll find a lot less bad news. When you see people acting in bad faith in the comments, have a quick browse of their profile to see if they are usually like that, then block them if they are.
There aren't that many users on Lemmy, and there are even fewer users that actually post and comment. You may find it's the same ones over and over, and blocking them helps.
Now on to your more pressing problem. Presumably you're seeing content from ![email protected], sorting by top in the last day I can see three memes with cats: https://programming.dev/c/[email protected]?dataType=Post&sort=TopDay
But the real action is here: https://programming.dev/c/[email protected]?dataType=Post&sort=New
There are like 20 posts in the last few days, most of them with plenty of upvotes.
well great for you
Pretty much only Lemmy. I like and prefer the form of post which can be media or weblink with description or just text and text is unlimited, with threaded comments for discussions and comments, and thematic categorization (in communities).
Occasionally, I open https://loops.video/ or some other random platform. That's nothin regular, though.
I have accounts on multiple instances, which is another layer of thematic separation. Community spread and content duplication is a downside, but also a technical consequence of the design.
I just recently joined Lemmy; never had a redditt account. Have been using Mastodon for quite a few years now; only ever dabbled in twitter. I like that the fedi stuff seems more organic and less manipulated by algorithms, although, that also makes it easy to miss stuff as well. Still getting a feel for Lemmy and discovering interesting communities. My ultimate social platform was Google Reader (still miss my sharebros/gals. My primary social media after the demise of GR was the comment section, BBS, of BoingBoing -- we had a mass departure after the publisher did some petty bans (started our own discourse instance)
so did you try peertube
Not really; only when somebody uses peertube to share a video
I started exploring Lemmy/Kbin during Reddit's API drama. I use Lemmy daily, mostly just lurking, but occasional participation. I probably participate here more than I did on Reddit. I post to & scroll through Pixelfed occasionally, definitely more than I ever used Instagram. My Mastodon account is essentially abandoned. I never had a Twitter account, so not exactly surprising. Oh, I also briefly tried Loops, never used TikTok. I'm not big on videos, so I haven't tried Peertube.
I'm tired of billionaires and big tech and want to support alternatives.
Only Lemmy. Switched to it from Reddit a while ago when they really started to show that their users were for sale. I'm also a big advocate for privacy. Never used Peertube much as there isn't much content. I use NewPipe
While peertube has no content you can follow the channels from here and interact with it, that is what I am doing and it does not feel as empty as doing it over there. (Also you do not have to create a new account!) Does not solve the content problem but I think it good to use it for those creators that are ![email protected] It actually works fairly well with lemmy (alot better than mastodon as the design and concept is not compatible), just that posts rarely get the same burst of interaction that things on lemmy get which is why it never shows up on your feed. Lemmy gets multicomms in 1.0 though so you can create one for peertube.
well do you hope that peertube will have content
Pretty much only Lemmy. I use it because I believe centralized social media and the companies that run it are killing the internet, and want to put energy into something that might replace it instead of creating free content for Reddit as I did for years.
Been on Mastodon for like four years. Ironically, I joined when during a major Twitter exodus, but I’d already left Twitter like two years before. I came here because I started to get tired of my content being used to make money for Mark Zuckerberg and I also noticed that “the algorithm” was primed to make me both addicted and angry all the time.
Came to Lemmy because I find it has more memes and humor than Mastodon and scratches the reddit itch (I left that platform about two years ago). It’s also a pretty good place to see news from around the world.
I also use Pixelfed, but rarely. I like to look at it when I have downtime but don’t want to be inundated with political posts and commentary. It tends to just be pretty pictures of flowers and mosses.
I love the Fediverse for being influencer-free social media. I really want to start a PeerTube instance for my own content (I’m a priest at a small Episcopal parish and I use streaming for our Christian education stuff and I find a huge disconnect with using a predatory and exploitative platform like YouTube for any kind of actual Christian material).
I tried Mastodon and just couldn't really find much I'm interested in on there.
I use the fediverse because reddit really pissed me off by taking away functional app options for a second fucking time
I've had my Lemmy account since 2 years but admittedly spent most of my time on 'the other site'. Until today, as I got banned for 3 days due to a single word. It was the push that I needed as I've now deleted my account and will use Lemmy exclusivly.
What was the word?
Eradicated in relation to the Russian regime.
ive been here for 1, originally on ee. before that suddenly died , big istance had alot more content then now, unfortunately, because people scattered too much. i recently made an acct on that site too, nope so sudden ban.
I just use Lemmy.
I used to browse imgur but they allowed advertising for AfD which caused me to search for a more ethical feeling platform.
I stopped using imgur when they got it in their heads they wanted to be social media instead of an image hosting site. The few times I’ve tried to follow a link there recently it’s been unusable, this is just icing on the shit cake
wait so far right parties use imgur to advertise themselves
We were informed about Mastodon from folks on Twitter back in 2019 that were looking to migrate. (I forget what Twitter was up to at the time, but part of me wants to say some form of censorship was going on) Never looked back on that end as Twitter's vibes were always rancid, well before the buyout, and the Masto instance we were on felt so much more like an actual community.
As for Lemmy, kinda similar story but we never had a Reddit. Never felt it necessary to interact with that community whereas this one feels more real, joined a couple years ago now I think?
We're also looking at WAFRN to replace or at least bridge from Bluesky, we kinda begrudgingly joined that site only after learning that Dorsey was out of the picture but it's just been nothing but the admins shooting themselves in the collective foot for as long as we've been on Bsky.
Lemmy, Mastadon, and a bunch of old school forum sites. I tried piefed and the UI isn't quite the right fit that lemmy is for me.
I can't be bothered to care, or have the time to keep up with, whoever's weekly petty political nuance about who runs what instance and why they're each a faschio-socialist whatever. If I wanted social media run by 8th graders, I would be on Truth Social.
Lemmy -> KBIN -> MBIN -> Piefed (just in the browser; no app/frontend). I don't use mastadon (I don't care for microblogging period).
Peertube has issues with discovery from what I see people posting. On the creator side, there's no earning model and the whole process is more complicated for a smaller audience.
only lemmy dont have the energy to switch, besides the last one went down last year.
Only lemmy, mastodon and twitter type stuff never made sense to me. I like that most fediverse platforms I've seen are being run by passionate people instead of just for a financial incentive.
I keep checking in on Pixelfed but the android app isn't user friendly. And I think a few days ago the servers were down.
pixelfed def needs to mature.
the servers didnt shutdown they went off temporarly due to a fatal issue but they likely fixed it
Yeah I just checked it's back up. But the app is still pretty rough.
Pixelix is great
Interesting. It's prettier. Is there a way to view the list of hashtags I'm following?
Profile (bottom right), 3 dots (top right), there they are
There they are! Thanks
Lemmy. I have a piefed but it was mostly just showing the same stuff as Lemmy, but later. I did like it, though.
Think I registered Mastodon and either a loops or peertube account but never really used them
Came to lemmy when I couldn't stand reddit anymore
well great for you
Just lemmy.. but it is kind of a waste land.. not alot of commentary or sometimes i get random feed posts in language i dont understand lol.
you may want to subscribe to a community to get content that you care about
Piefed, I like it a lot better than lemmy so far. That's it! I don't think that bluesky counts because everyone's just on the default server. I'd like to jump on pixelfed, but I can't find any servers for NSFW content.
pretty much just piefed et al. I think of it as the federation. I used to love the old newsgroups back in the day and eventually found slashdot when the millenium was new and later reddit but this is the closest I have been to newsgroups to me. the alt. rec. etc thing. they actually got ruined by spam. I think they would still be big if they had user filter config type of stuff.
I use lemmy primarily. I’ll use mastodon for the occasional watch party, but otherwise I’m inactive there. I’m currently exploring both loops and Pixelfed, but not sure how I feel about either yet. I’ve been meaning to look into peertube, bookwyrm, and neodb.
I use Lemmy, Mastodon, and Peertube.
I’ve an alt on .world that I just don’t use much anymore.
Ive hosted and contributed to a couple of federated platforms. Just little pull requests to help us all along.
The current list that I use is:
Ive also hosted:
And a number I forgot about. snac looked interesting too.
Of all of them Gotosocial has been the most stable for single user instance, piefed fuels my addition, peertube got my dog lots of subscriptions, and mastodon remains a stable.
Im having an absolutely fantastic time.
I just use lemmy, and a little matrix.
Mastodon/twitter likes never really caught my attention, too much noise to signal.
Matrix doesn't completely click, I don't get this half message board half chatroom business. It's too slow to be a chatroom but too fast to be a board you read a few times a day.
Lemmy is enough for me! Nowhere is perfect but there's a good balance here, and there are more uhh politically prosocial folks here compared to Reddit so I can't complain too much. 👍
I haven't even checked the other fediverse offers, but I assume they're also better (at least "vibe" wise) than the more popular and problematic alternatives.
I started like dozens of others when the api thing, but still visit reddit in read-only incognito mode because of the content. Not just the niche stuff, even mainstream things like soccer, F1 or chess, there is no content on lemmy. Anything that's not politics, ai or Linux, basically. Even for tech, I usually find better content of linkedin than lemmy. Yes, not only ceos and recruiters post on linkedin if you follow the right people you can learn a bunch. But shitposting is fun, so I'm also here.
Not using any other fediverse services, it's the same content in a different format.
i made an account for niche unfortunately, i had a burning questions i was asking. never on the MAIN PAGE, too toxic. you already can see even the most benign ones are astroturf by propaganda.
I also use Lemmy, Mastodon, Loops, and on occasion I use Pixelfed.
I'm trying out Piefed. Lemmy looks like relatively good software, but I don't like the political views of the developers behind Lemmy. Their whole shtick seems to be "non-western countries good, western countries bad".
Of course, western countries have done many bad things. But I think plenty of non-western countries have also done bad things. I just don't buy into a narrative which always tries to paint western countries as "the bad guys" and non-western countries as "the good guys".
I use Lemmy via Jerboa, Mastodon via Pachli (I used to use Moshidon but the dev stopped updating the app), Pixelfed via Pixelix, and Loops. All to combat big technofascist platforms, ever since I saw the video explaining how dickMusk stole the 2024 election.
I'd use Peertube more if all the Youtubers I followed started posting there in addition to posting on YouTube. For now, I use Wizestream on my phone/tablet and SmartTube on my Onn 4k TV box for YouTube.
I use Mastodon (rarely), Lemmy/PieFed (mainly) and PeerTube (occasionally) because I re-upload the content of another small creator. Some of the channels I follow I mentioned in this older comment, but the advice is relevant here as well. Ask creators you follow to mirror to PeerTube and you’ll have a reason to start using it more!
For YouTubers especially it can be as easy as setting up automatic synchronisation once and forgetting about it.
Edit: or be the one uploading for them if you have permission and the time for it like me ;)
