Please pick a password starting with ad and ending with min
You remind me of my bank about 17 years ago. Everyone had to have a 10-character password, exactly, and it had to include exactly 2 numbers and 1 symbol. I wasn't very knowledgeable about computers at the time and it already felt dumb.

‘Frightening’ Taliban law bans women from speaking in public
“This document not only violates Afghanistan’s domestic laws but also broadly contravenes all 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”
They didn't think it could be done, but I knew I could do it. All 30 articles in one law!
— A Taliban, probably

Borderline criminal
I like to imagine that it's not jars of peanut butter. Just raw peanut butter, sloshing around when it's warm.

German is cheating!

Is this for real? (Please see text)
The very same happens in French. The use of recently popular gender-neutral structures like "étudiant.e.s" is strongly discouraged in formal writing. The older "étudiant(e)s" less so but still not recommended.
What's recommended is to either say "étudiants et étudiantes" or just use the masculine form as a group for both masculine and feminine forms, as has been the standard forever, and almost no one bats an eye at.
It's not TERF, it's not misogynistic, it's just to make texts easier to read. It takes more time and effort to read a text full of those extra period/parenthesis characters, for very very little gain.
People wanting to write a text where they consider the sacrifice in readability worth it for the extra emphasis on gender inclusion still can; the police won't show up. It's just not standard grammar.

Spreading of the 100 biggest Lemmy communities

I heard what lemmy is. I googled Lemmy. I downloaded an app. I pressed sign up. I ended up on Lemmy.world.
I'll be honest I don't even really understand what different instances do.

It's pronounced niche, not niche, damn it.

Google sends emails that 100% look like phishing
I can see why they would want that. They may consider email to be inherently less safe than their platform, so they don't send any sensitive information there.
Canada's government stuff also generally works that way, except without any links.
I'm not sure how legit their concerns are, but it's a thing.

Hello. I'm a woman. And I'm also a dumbass who thinks she has no shot with pretty much anyone. Plus I'm easily embarrassed.
Plus if I'm interested I'm like "Ugh i don't want to be a creep who'd approach someone for their looks", projecting because I get uncomfortable if someone finds me attractive, completely ignoring in the moment that if you don't do that you'll never get to know the person.
This behaviour makes no sense. Just wanted to reassure(?) you that guys don't have a monopoly on stupidity.

I also like Xitter, because in my head that can only be pronounced Shitter, which is a good name for it.

Microsoft finally officially confirms it's killing Windows Control Panel sometime soon
My god, the amount of legacy crap in Windows.
They ought to just start over at some point.

It's possible. But it's a huge undertaking. If you just wanted to fully understand all of the specifications for HTTP, JavaScript and CSS, it'd take you days before having written a single line of code.
Then you need to write all that in a performant way.
Then you need to keep up with all the new features.
Then you need to keep up with all the new security threats.
Browsers nowadays are practically little operating systems. So the question is not that far off from asking what prevents you from writing an alternative to Windows.
You can. But it'll cost millions, or maybe billions, to build something good.

Costs Less? When That Happened?
You know, it's not always, but apple does sell things that are price-competitive with similarly performing competing products.
Some iterations of the Mac Mini have been hard to beat with a tiny PC with similar performance.
The M1 MacBooks had some surprisingly cheap options for the relatively premium laptops they were.
Samsung's Ultra phones tend to cost more or less the same as the Apple Pro Max phones.
The main difference is sometimes just that Apple doesn't make low-end or low-mid-range, or sometimes not even anything below "relatively high-end", products in a particular category.

Black Myth: Wukong is too mediocre for all this drama
Not really on topic but wait just a gosh darn second.
This person is playing and reviewing (what might be called) the prettiest, most demanding game ever made, and they're doing it on a Steam Deck, on Low?
But still, the visuals are the main thing they praise about it?
I'm a bit surprised? Confused? Anyway that's a little weird.

RFK Jr. admits he falls for online misinformation “all the time”
Honestly, generally speaking he's an idiot, but in this specific instance I like that he's admitting to his fault.
We all fall for misinformation at least sometimes. It's time to stop shaming people for falling for it and doing something about the issue.
