An immense weight on a great man

It breaks my heart. I have a few Ukrainian coworkers (working remotely), and when we jump in Slack and I chat with them now compared to when we first started working together, all I hear is the weariness, the sadness, the loss. This woman designed all of our proprietary software, and she was always such an upbeat, motivated badass. That cliche of a person "lighting up the room" when they walk in? That's her. Now though? She's had to move three times to avoid bombs, and even though she's safe now, she's lost something that I don't know if she will ever get back.

What I see in this picture of Zelenskyy is what I hear in her voice every time I talk with her. And it makes me fucking furious.

Robert Morris, former Texas megachurch pastor and Trump adviser, indicted for child sex crimes

Name an industry that if they had this many child sexual predators, wouldn't be immediately shut down and banned from operating ever again.

Seriously. Can you imagine if, say, NASA had the same ratio of child sexual predators as Christian churches do? Or Applebee's? Or Jiffy Lube? They'd all have to close up shop. Hell, there's a daycare in my town that was in business for 30 years, and a teacher got busted for diddling a kid. That place was done for THAT WEEK. Doors closed, never opened again. Probably tens of thousands of kids came through that place just fine, but all it took was ONE, and they were kaput.

These fucking churches need to be shut the fuck down. Those black metal guys in the 90s had the right idea.

Looking to make a major life change?

As others in this thread have said, buying a property in Japan doesn't extend your Visa or grant you residence in the country. This would be a waste of time if you didn't already have that lined up. However, there are countries that do. Some have what's called the Golden Visa program, or Investor/Real Estate Visa program (there are other names, but if you're doing a search, this should turn up decent results). Here's a list of some countries that do this, and the minimum amount you need to spend.

Portugal - Golden Visa Investment - €500,000 ($540k USD) or €350,000 ($380k USD) for lower population areas, or properties that need to be renovated Residency benefits - Residency permit for 5 years, with the opportunity to apply for permanent residency after that

Spain - Golden Visa Investment - €500,000 ($540k USD) Residency benefits - Residency permit for 1 year, renewable as long as you own the property, and you can apply for permanent residency after 5 years

Greece - Golden Visa Investment - €250,000 ($270k USD) Residency benefits - Residency permit for 5 years, renewable as long as you own the property, and you can apply for permanent residency after 7 years

Thailand - Thailand Elite Visa Investment - THB 1,000,000 (about $30k USD) for a 5 year Visa Residency benefits - Renewable every 5 years with no residency requirement

Ecuador - Investor Visa Investment - $42,500 in real estate Residency benefits - Grants you permanent residency

Malaysia - Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) Investment - RM 1 million (about $240k USD) in real estate Residency benefits - Grants you a 10 year renewable Visa

Philippines - Special Resident Retiree Visa Investment - $50k in real estate Residency benefits - Grants you permanent residency

When I was looking into bailing on the US, I made a Libre Office spreadsheet with like 70 countries and all this info plus a bunch of other personal requirements for what I was looking for, so some of it may be outdated. Hell, some of it may be straight up incorrect, so feel free to double check it.

Republican town hall drowned out by "tax the rich" chants

Spineless cowards. There are amateur stand up comedians living in their cars and working for beer money who handle hecklers better than these professional public speakers with lifetime Healthcare.

Meanwhile we have people like AOC volunteering to do town halls in Republican districts, just so Republican voters can actually talk to a member of congress.

What a pathetic state of affairs.

DHS has begun performing polygraph tests on employees to find leakers

If you're going to rely on pseudo-scoentific bullshit, you might as well bring in some palm readers and voodoo priests instead. At least that'll be entertaining.

EDIT - Just want to add this - Never, under any circumstances, should you take a polygraph test. If you are a suspect (legally or otherwise), they will not use the results to exonerate you. If they suspect you did it, but the polygraph doesn't detect any deception, they will throw out the results as "unreadable" and pursue other means of investigating you. But if the results detect deception, they will treat it like the fucking Oracle at Delphi.

Dear Democrats: It Would Be Nice If You Could Lead, And Not Off A Cliff

Liberalism isn't going to save us. Way I see it, if we want a better country, we have three options:

  1. Violent revolution. This should be a last resort, and I don't think we are quite there yet.

  2. Wait for Fascism to collapse. It will. Problem is, A FUCKING LOT of people will suffer and die in the mean time.

  3. Mobilize a viable third party. No, not the Greens. They are just as corrupt as the rest, and they pal around with Fascist traitors. I'm talking about a real grass roots Leftist movement, starting from the ground up. Basically, use the exact same playbook that MAGA used. They spent the past decade taking over social media with their Manosphere bullshit, and suddenly Gen Z shifted hard to the Right, which younger generations almost never do. We need to take back that online space. Take over town hall meetings, take over school boards, take over city councils, show up in huge numbers to vote for actual good (or as good as we can get) judges and DA's. This also means volunteering, phone banking, door knocking, and most importantly of all, some of you need to run for office. Even something local can make a difference in your community. That's how MAGA won. They didn't even have the numbers. They just had the right strategy, and in their hubris, Democrats ignored it.

The third option is obviously what I prefer to happen. It'll take a few years, and we may not even win the White House in 2028. But this isn't about you or me. It's about the future of civilization. If they did it, so can we. Let's not be outsmarted by a bunch of people who worship a man who can't fucking read.
