Because of ethical restraints it is extremely rare for a senior government official, let alone a sitting president, to endorse a consumer product so explicitly.

Yeah... Those were good times.

How long till a President ends a speech with "smash that like and subscribe for 10% off RAID: Shadow Legends"?

91

He is already kind of doing it, just replace Raid Shadow Legends with Russia.

23
lemmy.world

This is an insult to RAID shadow legends. They're too high quality for this conman to hock them

In parallel universes where he wasn't born of a rich family, Trump is a car salesman. This is our universe trying to find balance.

The kind that doesn’t know shit about any car on the lot and just tries to pressure you into buying the most expensive car because it’s the most expensive, but was secretly totaled on a flood.

He hasn't got the charisma, the financial sense, or trustworthiness to become a used car salesman.

Yet here we are.

Keep boycotting, and join protests outside Tesla showrooms. ~60% of Musk’s wealth is in Tesla shares. Tank the stock and tank his wealth and thus influence

There are protests all across the US and starting to spring up in other countries. Here’s a list of upcoming ones + a guide to help organize one around you if none exist

I'm not surprised. Didn't Donald Trump used the Oval Office once to promote some... ketchup or sauce or something, and was paid for? I mean it denigrades the station of the office, but does he really care?

41
lemmy.world

He literally sold the Resolute Desk to Goya for ad space.

This is after he did a Mcdonalds/Dominos ad when he had them cater the NCAA basketball champions' dinner at the White House.

It's what he does.

Don't be surprised, each social media influencer has to make a living by promoting shitty products and scams for the affiliate money.

Seeing musk, trump and a Tesla in a single shot just makes that toxic association so much stronger. I don't think this is going to play out like they hope.

Plus, you know the boycott is working, talk about desperate.

Are there laws in the US about such conflicts of interest or was is basically tradition until this point not to do shit like this?

33
lemm.ee

Laws are as good as the ability and will to enforce them.

35

Maybe there is a language barrier, but I didn't understand if a legal framework is implied by "ethical restraints". Can one be taken to court for violating an ethical restraint?

this whole gambit was actually a 4d chess move by elon to brainwash righties into buying EVs therefore solving climate change and bringing about global communism. I never should have doubted you, sir

So the deep south yeehaw redneck GOP are supposed to buy EVs now?
I think some brains are about to explode...

Okay, but lots of people do. Why not both? I'm sure you realize that progress is incremental, we're not going to jump from here straight to a utopia.

Also, many people don't have a choice. My job has to be done in-person most of the time, it can't be done by robots or AI (yet), and I have to bring a large amount of equipment with me. But I would love my work vehicle to be a government-subsidized zero-emissions one!

I yelled at my phone when I saw this.

He said "oh wow! The whole thing is a computer!" like cars haven't been like that for YEARS now.

The I go on Facebook for some reason (I am in a rural area) and I am seeing people talking about buying teslas in the local community pages. These people are not people that couldn't afford a used Mitsubishi Mirage....

Well, it was Goya last time. Now, it's Tesla. Soon, it will be Campbell's Soup for all the soup-lines his depression will create.

This the same dipshit who wants to halt federal EV buildout, EV Programs, and federal building charging stations. I doubt any of you needed reminding, but JFC, it pains me that some dummy is gonna buy an EV only AFTER he sat in one for political theater.

12

Well, yeah. It's the same boomer move: pull the ladder up behind you. Musk and Tesla already benefitted from the programs he now wants to cut, to raise the barrier of entry for potential competitors...

9

Sawsticars aren't profitable without the carbon taxes credits. Notice no one has suggested getting rid of those.

Those public chargers are competion with Musk's Tesla chargers. The only profitiable part of Tesla.

10

😂 what a waste. I doubt this even moves the needle on public perception. Rednecks aren't buying these things only well off urban Republicans. I can't think many leftists give a shit about these things. They may be fast, but they have no class.

9

especially considering how restricted by range and chargers people are subject to in more rural areas.

5

Partially true. It moves the perception against Tesla, xelon & president felon. Sales will drop further.

The joke wasn’t the energy drink but that the government was blatantly owned by a corporation to its own detriment. The joke is now a reality apparently.

Surely associating the vehicles even more closely with the primary reason the stock is falling off of a fucking cliff will prevent the stocks from falling off of a cliff.

1

Presidents (present nor former) are not allowed to drive vehicles.

On public highways. I remember they made a fairly big point of Dubya driving a pickup truck while visiting his ranch in Texas.
