One of the points of federated and decentralized social media is that there’s no need to profit. The concept is that communities are built by individuals instead of a central institutions and the communal gain is what incentivizes folks to host servers and participate. I see it as a similar ecosystem as the open source software community who constantly gives everything away for free because it serves the common good, enables faster innovation and widens the spread of knowledge that makes everyone more successful/efficient at the end of the day. If these decentralized social networks can provide the same level of benefit as Reddit, I.e. people adding “Reddit” to their search queries to get first hand answers, I think that’s the singularity point at which people will realize giant social network corporations are completely unnecessary. I can’t wait. Seems inevitable to me because the entire business model of the current centralized networks is unsustainable - part of the reason you see Reddit making such drastic moves regarding their API or Meta investing in anything and everything outside of social media or Twitter throwing unnecessary digital products at the wall and hoping people pay for some of them. Once decentralized social networks are mainstream the ad target pool is going to be greatly affected and these companies will collapse under their own weight if they haven’t pivoted to something else.

As a Taoist, I don’t believe in any deity and my beliefs boil down to letting people be who they are meant to and want to be and supporting them as much as I can in their personal journeys. That’s not an outdated or childish belief system. You’re conflating Abrahamic religions and mysticism with all religion and you don’t seem to have invested much time in understanding religion as a tool and concept outside of those areas.

Respecting people’s cultures and religion boils down to respecting people - if you believe that people shouldn’t be generally respected then your views are no more developed than that of a selfish child and you are the thing you’re complaining about.

The situation Hamas operates in is absolutely nuanced but saying a terrorist organization is evil and supporting a terrorist organization makes you complicit in supporting evil is not an indicator of a simplistic world view, it’s stating an objective fact. If anything you’re the one expressing a simplistic worldview by ignoring the obvious truths of the situation and its various pieces in favor of obfuscating the parts of the situation that are self evident and clear.

Feels like another entry in the “full length, live action commercials” series. Joining Tetris, BlackBerry, Barbie, Jobs, GI Joe, Social Network, Transformers, and even Star Wars since licensing and derivative products make more money than their actual tv and movie content.

I really dislike this trend, even if some of the movies are sometimes good. Feels icky and insincere.

That article you shared is literally an opinion piece that even says the actor hasn’t specifically made antivax statements. It’s written by someone trying to infer the actors opinions without any verification. That’s not a reputable source. Also, we’re knocking people for twitter follows now? That could be something Levi looks at, it could be a random account added by a social media team, it could be any number of things.

You use the word “actively sides” - that’s objectively not true based on these sources. I’m all for holding people accountable but come on, this is just attacking the guy and using baseless accusations to merit it. Do you have any verifiable or reputable sources that prove this guy is a hateful bigot? If he is, so be it, but what you shared doesn’t support that notion in any fair sense.

Edit: based on some of the responses I’m seeing I’m gonna leave this thread alone. There are so many inferences, allusions, speculations, disreputable sources and “guilty by association” reasons being used to hate on this person that it’ll probably start an all day argument. If you wanna irrationally doom a burgeoning social media network with misguided ideals, that’s on you. Lemmy will never reach critical mass on part time unpaid devs. If you were really against your usage data being monetized you wouldn’t be using any social media as that’s a core part of how any major social network grows and thrives.

I swear the most annoying part of lemmy are the people who think all open source options are better than all closed source.
