Epic CEO Tim Sweeney says new multiplayer games are failing because players have no reason to leave their friend groups, touts Unreal Engine 6’s cross-game features as a solution

Rockstar lost me when they added invasive anticheat to GTAV. It was a great game prior to that, but take away something I've been enoying for almost 10 years on a whim and don't allow me to play it anymore because I'm on Linux? Goodbye and good riddance. Not touching anything they put out ever again.

Are you gonna be buying a Steam machine?

I was pretty set on buying one regardless when it was announced and still plan to. I knew the price was going up but with the delay I had time to save more. I like the compactness of it and it would be great next to my Mac Mini M1 on my TV shelf. I also want to reward the adoption of Linux as a gaming platform, and buying Valve hardware is the best way right now to vote with your wallet that Linux is the future of gaming. I bought multiple Steam Decks and I bought both the 2015 and 2026 Steam Controllers. I want the Machine.

Also, it has RGB! I need to get one to add it to OpenRGB.

The question is whether I'll get it with or without a second controller, and I think that comes down to whichever queue I get selected for in the random drawing.

Apex Legends is taking away its support for the Steam Deck and Linux

How do they know you haven't trained an AI to get headshots? The cheats often break the bounds of what is realistic in games, whether it is allowing you to see through walls (server shouldn't be sending enemy positions that aren't in view), going too fast (server should speed check pplayer positions), getting items they shouldn't have (server should do inventory sanity checks), etc. Other than that, look for signs of automated movement/things unrealistically precise for a human to do. Eventually the cheating will just be moved to a separate air gapped computer running AI on the video feed. Client side is an invasive, broken, and malicious concept.

Louis Rossmann taunts Bambu Lab by hosting banned 3D Printer firmware fork, dares $1 billion company to sue him — more creators pledge support and boycotts, Snapmaker donates equipment to embattled de

I'm happy with my slightly modded Ender 3 Pro, but if I ever upgrade the Snapmaker U1 looks nice. I'll only buy from a company that supports open source firmware. Bambu is trash, unfortunately every 3D printing related YouTuber seems to have happily taken a sponsorship from them so they are everywhere now. I hate it.

EA / Respawn now block Apex Legends from running on Linux and Steam Deck

God fucking damn it. Fuck off with the anticheat bullshit. Fucking plague is destroying gaming. If the whiny tryhards want "cOmP3Tit1v3 int3grIteE" or whatever dumb excuse the devs pulled out their ass this time then just make RANKED mode locked behind this malware-powered prison shit. Don't ruin the game for everyone. The majority of the player base isn't whining about cheaters, and this is true of pretty much every game. It's the tryhard comp scene most affected, let them enable it to play comp. At least give us the option to play on non anticheat servers. I hate how every multiplayer game is ruining itself over this garbage.

Can you touch type?

I was never able to touch type up through middle of high school despite typing papers and taking formal typing courses. Once I got into online PC gaming and also programming I got good at touch typing very fast. Is typing a skill you use daily? Natural practice beats forced if you already have the fundamentals down. QWERTY for me.

*Permanently Deleted*

Why can't they put the power button on the front where it belongs. It's already stupid that they put it on the back, putting it on the bottom is downright idiotic. If they don't want to mess up the oh so important Apple aesthetic just make it an invisible touch button or something. Apple hates usability.

WhatsApp running through android-translation-layer (no container!) on Linux desktop

This Android Translation Layer looks amazing for Linux phones. Waydroid is already pretty awesome, but it's just running full fat Android on top of your Linux system and has all the limitations that brings (poor to no notification integration with the host system, poor integration of filesystem, extra resource usage for all of the Android services, issues with power management and suspend, inability to change resolution on the fly, poor integration with host onscreen keyboard, etc). I've used Waydroid on postmarketOS and it's nice to be able to have Android apps available, but it almost feels like still carrying around a second phone, just that second phone is virtual. Something like ATL sounds like it properly integrates Android apps into the host OS. I need to give this a try soon.

Youtube frontend, Grayjay is coming to Steam

The more I hear about Louis Rossman and Futo the less I trust either of them. I used to like Louis for his right to repair conversations, but Futo is a very shady organization. They act like they promote open source but refuse to adopt actual FOSS licensing and try to be overly corporate while also trying to play the pro-consumer side. I don't like it. There are YouTube frontends made by actual FOSS developers with proper FOSS licenses, so I'm not sure why anyone should support or use Grayjay.

Got my Steam Controller today

Mine showed up as well. I wasn't expecting it so soon since the count had already gone past the first delivery dates when I got my order in (about an hour after opening). Enjoying it so far, spent some time setting up the trackpad and gyro and experimenting in Marvel Rivals. I've actually been enjoying the trackpads a lot more on this controller than I did on the Steam Deck. They're a bit more comfortably positioned and touchpad input works better on a 240Hz display than on a 60Hz one. I got a profile set up that has been working pretty well for me now and played a bunch of games today to experiment with controls and see if I could do anywhere as well as keyboard and mouse. I'm quite happy with the touchpads, though I don't think it's quite as accurate as KB+M but it's way closer than a normal gamepad.

Android will become a locked-down platform in 194 days

PostmarketOS is already in a good state for a secondary device, though I don't think it can completely replace an Android phone just yet. Most devices still have some fundamental hardware support issues even on the more well supported phones (camera is the big one, call audio is also problematic on a lot of devices). However, as a pocketable Linux machine, it is wonderful. I got a second cheap SIM card so I can have data on my OnePlus 6 postmarketOS phone as there are a lot of tasks that work better on Linux than Android. I keep an Android daily driver but am trying to do less and less on it and more on the postmarketOS device.

Microsoft wants $30 to let you keep using Windows 10 securely for another year

Reply in thread

Except for more and more multiplayer games unfortunately. If you only play single player games, Linux gaming is awesome. If you play with your friends, the shitty anticheat situation means you may need to keep Windows around. I have Windows 10 just for Fortnite because my friends play. GTA Online just killed Linux play by adding BattlEye. Just today, one of the biggest online games that did work on Linux including its anticheat dropped support (Apex Legends). We desperately need a way to fight back against this bullshit, because it's undoing all the incredible progress we've made. Valve needs to start banning games from their store for retroactively breaking Linux support.

Ender 3 Pro is a completely offline printer. It has a microSD slot and a USB port, that's it. No network connectivoty at all. It runs Marlin firmware which is a long-standing Arduino-based open source 3D printer firmware. It's highly customizable and upgradable. I added a CR Touch bed probe to mine and rebuilt the firmware to enable the unified bed leveling features. It's not the most user friendly but it's a decent, cheap platform, fully open source, and puts out decent prints.

Red Dead Redemption released on Steam

If Rockstar hadn't just royally screwed all Linux gamers over by adding that god-awful BattlEye anti-cheat to GTA Online, I might be interested. Now I see Rockstar does not care if I have access to the games I've purchased, so why would I want to buy more of their games? No thanks, especially not $50 for a 20 year old game. Rockstar won't be seeing a penny from me.

Agreed to a point. I don't care so much that "the devs need to eat" because these are AAA corporations, not indie devs. The moderate gains and losses aren't directly affecting the people that actually made the game, they're just affecting the bonuses the CEOs get. What does matter though is that if we as Linux gamers want them to care, they need to see that Linux users are generating revenue. They're greedy corpos and revenue is all they give a shit about. I'm OK contributing a small amount to games that continue to support Linux. I'm OK spending $5 every few months to buy the Overwatch 2 battle pass if it means Blizzard sees that someone who only plays on Linux is generating income. I'm certain they looked at the money coming in from Linux players more than the actual number of said players when making this decision. The only way to make corporate monsters care about you is to feed their greed. Sometimes, feeding them a small amount can potentially help your cause.
