Lemmy.world Admin Response to Defederation from Exploding Heads

Reply in thread

You always have to put it into perspective. The reaction when beehaw defederated from this instance was also not met with elation here but most just were dissapointed and I did not read any slurs or colored swearing insults.

Edit: I went over to see what the fuss is about. And the first thing I see is "tranny faggot" and justification for "joe biden is a pedo". Lmfao really? Nothing lost by defederating from that such a cesspool.

Fediverse situation right now

Reply in thread

The instance at exploding-heads.com got defederated from by a lot of instances and among them the largest one lemmy.world
It happened due to them allowing hatespeech like "tranny faggot". Top post now is complaining about how the rest is sensitive libs and in the same breath call "Joe Biden is a pedo". They're throwing a tantrum about how they're getting cancelled because they can't smell the shit under their own shoe.

Still more progressive than Switzerland to this day. They have normalized 42.5h workweek. You need to work 8.5 hours to be considered a fulltime employee.

Everyone Watches TV with Subtitles Now. How’d That Happen?

Reply in thread

It's actually voice technique for the most part. Traditional old microphones weren't as good at recording so actors were specially trained to speak and articulate well to get past the interference and background noise since filtering wasn't really done. As microphones and technological advances improved so did the microphones and the need for special articulation became less and less until somewhere in the 70s or 80s the culture in film shifted to normal voices to have better immersion between the audience and the movie scene. And it just went from there. Nowadays our microphones are so good that even whispered conversations in intimate scenes can be well recorded. So the actors basically just use their everyday voice or try to emulate a real accent which are often slurred.

Websites telling me what I can do with my own browser so they can have their pointless cookies

Reply in thread

You need to track the user for a poll. Sessions don't work since private browsing enables duplicate votes. Tracking the IP can block users from the same network/wifi. Cookies get auto-sent and browser storage is only clientside. Really not many more options aside from making an account on a site and logging in. I find it a pretty reasonable solution actually.

Millennial rule

Reply in thread

Ironic that Tate is a millenial. Also generations aren't like monolithic blocks of culture. The reason Tate is popular is because literally everyone is failing young disenfranchised men. Sure we get women as heroes now (good ones and very prominent bad ones ... ahem WW84)
The reason we get a backsliding is because (imo) we focus on elevating women too much. It is so so devastating for young men that just get nothing. No recognition, no support and no opportunities. Couple that with the fact that until men hit their mid to late 20s the dating power dynamic is asymmetricly shifted towards women. And you get hammered by the media "women support here, women support there" and if any young teen dares to ask "well what about us boys?" They just get shushed, that it's not their place, male privilege etc. They don't see that "privilege" everyone else speaks of. So you just get mounting aggression because no one is confirming their struggles. And eventually it ferments and turns to hate and then you can serve them whatever lies you want, if you give them the prospect of control over their life they will eat it up. And that's what Tate did. He promised them power and success.

We should not let the open web die a quiet death

Reply in thread

Yeah well it's called web 2.0 so naturally we need a dot.com bubble 2.0, only it's just the data bubble and failure to monetize it or rather you can't just monetize social media data. Turns out that data is still not much use to advertisers no matter how manipulative and optimized their method is. Data is still data and not money. The only institutions really actually getting use out of that would be governments (look at China). VC are pulling out and advertisers are pulling out.
