A Plastic Motor Just Defied a Century of Engineering Assumptions

All these comments feel very nitpicky. Its a one of a kind, experimental motor. Built to test the properties of a new and a not well understood phenomenon. The fact that the motor moves at all is pretty amazing. We don't know what the technology could grow into in the future, we don't know what the applications could be. Simply because we don't actually know what all this sort of device is capable of with further study and refinement. The tungsten filament lightbuld generated far more heat than light for over a hundred years before we managed to come up with the led, which in its infancy also barely produced light.

Apparently I'm an idiot

I don't get much hope from people like this.

They were ok with the rape, and the illegal deportations, and the pedophilia, and the elimination of public services and healthcare, the removal of any and all environmental regulations, the killing of American citizens in the streets, the genocides abroad, etc..... But "OMG GAS PRICES WENT UP A DOLLAR!?!?!?" is what counts as a step to far for these types of people?????

In my eyes there is no redeeming what they were ok with. To little to late, they can all go get fucked.

Cloudy future for bourbon has Jim Beam closing Kentucky distillery for a year

I'm a Ky native, I grew up just a couple towns over from Jim Beam, I've built equipment for the bourbon industry, I have friends and family that currently work at distilleries. Keep up the boycott Canada, make it hurt. The majority of my fellow Kentuckians voted for Trump. Despite the rest of us warning them what would happen, we pleaded with them even, but here we are. They voted for greed and bigotry, and I have 0 sympathy for the ones that are losing their jobs over this. After all, it's what they voted for.

What's a common occurrence in your hobby that you think shouldn't be?

Reply in thread

I feel your pain, I'm a trans woman and cars and motorcycles have been my hobby since I was a teenager but I avoid most car meets like the plague. The import scene seems to be a lot better than the classic and muscle car scenes but there's still a fair bit of right-wing bs. I do find it hilarious when I roll up somewhere in my classic jeep and notice some maga chud oogling it, the look on their faces when I step out is priceless.

More liberals, people of color and LGBTQ Americans say they're buying guns out of fear

Reply in thread

I'm a leftist and life long gun owner, I go to the range every other weekend and enjoy it greatly as a hobby. I shoot competively in both long range and pistol competitions. I also think we are in dire need of much strickter gun control here in the US. I would say a full 80% of gun owners should not be allowed to have them due to a lack of training and understanding of firearms and their use.

If you're thinking about buying a gun I would suggest first going to a range and taking a basic firearms class. I would suggest finding one of the corporate owned chains simply because your less likely to run into the wrong (far right wing) type of gun enthusiast. RangeUSA is a good option. But really any range will have classes available for first time gun owners, usually for under $100. They also offer rentals once you've familiarized yourself with safe operation and handling. For home self defence purposes I always reccomend a mid or fullsize 9mm handgun. They have relatively little recoil, are plentiful, cheap, and easy to handle.

BANG!

Reply in thread

I was thinking more in the sense of the villain giving their little speech to a protagonist that hasn't ever killed anyone that "If you kill me then your just like me, you'll be equally bad even though I've killed thousands and my death would actually be of benefit to the world."

Aluminum plant catches fire and takes down the roof in half a minute

Reply in thread

It's not oil, its molten aluminum judging from how bright and white the flame is and the fact that the machine is an aluminum bar extruder. People don't generally realize how insanely flammable aluminum can be when it is reduced to a fine enough powder. Powdered aluminum mixed with an oxidizer is what makes fire crackers go bang. It's also one of the two main ingredient in thermite.

White House looks to repeal funding bill provision that would keep US embassies from flying Pride flags

I'd much rather they try and implement actual protections for LGBT+ Americans than just do this performative bs. I don't give a flying fuck if there are pride flags at our embassies. What I actually want is to be protected from losing my healthcare, housing, and general right to appear in public without fear of harassment. There are already several states I don't feel safe traveling to, and that is an absolute travesty in what is supposedly the "Land of Freedom". What a fucking joke.
