That was mean... And awesome!

Any chance for alpha/internal testers like we were on the Sync for Reddit?

Wink, wink!

Cheers brother! Nice to see you around here.

Same. I've installed a few apps to keep an eye on their development, but web is still my favourite for now. Some of the apps have gestures and easily collapsible threads, but UIs aren't completely polished yet.

8

Try wefwef it's a web app with gesture support. Seems to be one of the more featured GUIs so far.

Connect for Lemmy.

It's being updated to add features and fix bugs pretty much daily. Which means it is improving at a crazy speed.

It's come a long way since I first started using it - about 3 days ago!

32

Connect here too. Jerboa kept crashing on me. When it did load it couldn't connect. When it could connect it wouldn't load in icons and left some posts blank.

7

Another (mostly) happy Connect user here! It's crazy the blistering pace at which the Dev keeps pumping out updates. I keep alternating between Connect and Thunder. I think Liftoff still needs some UI polish and it doesn't handle jumping to communities in different instances very gracefully.

7

Right?? if the dev keeps going as strong as it's been so far I can see Connect being a competent option even after Sync Launches.

2

The latest update broke Jerboa for me so I've just jumped onto Connect and I've got to say I like it! Only complaint is there is no clear divider between posts so visually is a bit blurry but I can live with that.

Edit; turns out the latest version of connect fixes my complaint! Very happy

1

Coming from RIF, I've found Connect to be the most similar of all the ones I've tried so far (not out of the box, but it has some great customization options in the settings). I'm also so impressed by how fast new features are getting added.

1

Loving wefwef the most so far as well - I just wish some of its buttons were a bit bigger

2
lemmy.ml

Connect for Lemmy at the moment, but I've signed up to be notified when Sync for Lemmy drops. Sync had everything I wanted for my Reddit app, and I'm hoping for a similar interface for Lemmy when it arrives.

26

Hell yeah, same boat for me. Connect is actually pretty damn close to sync functionality which makes it easier to transition while waiting for sync for lemmy

2
lemmy.world

Yeah just found it today and I quite like it so far. Had been using Jerboa but the after v0.0.37 that was pushed out made it's just crashing on startup since I was logged into lemmy.world. However I would like to see an option to not merge the feeds of all logged in accounts. I prefer a UX to switch what account I'm viewing with and see only the subscriptions of the selected account.

5

Apparently my desired feature is already present. From the Home tab the Subscribed/Local/All button expands to let you pick which logged in account to show.

wefwef.app until Sync for Lemmy is out

20

Yeah, same. Tried wefwef and it's smoother than I expected. Gonna keep using it until Sync out.

7

I'm testing connect right now and so far it works very well. Unfortunately Jerboa crashed for me all the time since the last update. I'm still hoping for a bacon reader version for Lemmy.

3
lemmy.world

Boost for Lemmy when it comes out. Been using Boost since 2017 and I hope to continue doing so!

16

Liftoff, it's functional and looks good. Waiting to try Sync for Lemmy, though.

16
lemmy.world

Jerboa does not work with all 0.17 instances, I'm using Connect and may switch to Sync

16

This is me too. Tried using Jerboa, and it wouldn't let me connect anywhere. Switched to Connect For Lemmy, and it's pretty slick.

6
lemmy.world

I've only tried Jerboa, Liftoff, and Thunder so far but Thunder is my early favorite. I'll probably keep bouncing around until Sync is ready.

16

Thunder looks and feels amazing. But idk why the exception handling stuff just ain't there yet. This will improve with updates but at the moment if the app comes across anything it's not coded to do, it'll crash.

Is thunder on the play store? I can't find it. I'm using connect ATM which is honestly not too shabby but it's a bit laggy in general.

Jerboa, Thunder, and Liftoff.

  • Jerboa is the most complete, but it's not very good... It's slow and the UI is very bland.
  • Thunder is great, and has some very nice features. It's still pretty buggy though.
  • Liftoff might be the best out of these 3, but there's some very bad bugs/problems when dealing with separate instances.

IMO. I use Lemmy on desktop most of the time anyways.

13

Thunder, until Sync for Lemmy is released

Edit: okay, Liftoff is pretty good

WefWef is SOLID. Nothing will ever be Apollo but this definitely a easy transition from it.

lemmy.world

I guess so I never used Apollo I used to use infinity for reddit but I'm definitely liking it so far except up voting or downvoting is two taps away instead of one.

edit: it's one tap away I'm still learning how to use it sorry.

1
TheFririshreply

I'm using it on Mull which is a fork of Firefox with uBlock Origin activated and so far no issues. so it should probably work even better on a chromium based browser. I might try later just to see the stability.

How do you sub/unsub community in summit?

Edit: found it, swipe right

4

I'm going to add a button in the overflow menu in the next update to make it more discoverable.

1

Hmm, I'll give it a try, liftoff being nice, but since there are more options, I'm willing to try them. 😃

3
lemmy.world

Was using Jerboa and really liked it up until today, it just crashes now.

Downloaded Liftoff and it seems pretty good. I want something like RIF interface and both apps give me that.

11

Same thing happened to me; been using jerboa just fine until today and just crashes immediately. Swapped to liftoff and seems pretty good so far.

1
???reply
lemmy.world

I am unable to find it in the playstore. Could you link to it? There are too many apps called "LiftOff" haha

4

Okay, looks like it's "unavailable" for me to test. My partner managed to download it though as a "test user". Does anyone know how it's possible to qualify for it to get early access?

1

Connect for lemmy works great for me so far. Though it doesn't support wide screens very well.

11

Honestly, not sure at this point. Jerboa has the fullest features as far as everything goes. Every other app has been missing some key functionally for me to varying degrees. Not to say any of them aren't good, but none have truly, ultimately impressed me yet. Sync was my go-to on Reddit, so I have very high hopes for that launch. If I had to pick one alternative that I could use, but still doesn't quite tic all the boxes, it's Thunder. Especially right now, as Jerboa crashes on launch.

EDIT: Liftoff is where it's at. It has all the features other third-party apps are still missing.

10
Arkatrucreply
lemmy.world

It's not an app though? It's just a browser shortcut, or am I missing a way to get an apk or something?

2

It's a PWA. Open it on your browser then click the 3 dot menu and select "Install". That'll put an icon on your home screen and it will behave as a regular app. It will open "Fullscreen" meaning it won't have the browser interface.

5
h0lylagreply
lemmy.world

It's a web app but it integrates fairly well. I'm testing it out now and it seems ok. I've been a sync user for many years though so when that's ready I'll swap over most likely.

3

Jerboa is the best Boost-like app for me but Liftoff has been a good alternative to .17 instances

10

I just wish these clients would take some cues from the way Relay does its "List" view. Thunder's list view is getting there, but it's still way too crowded. Connect's is worse, it's just evenly spaced details for each post, which then blends into the space between each post.

2

Liftoff all the way! At the moment is miles away. Hopefully more will step up in near future.

10

I'm just using the mobile website. It works and it doesn't pester me to use something else, which is really refreshing!

8

I'm so tired of that, Especially when a site says to use their app and won't let you keep browsing the site because the popup is in the way.. Why even have the website anymore.

2

If Sync for Lemmy releases with half of the features and polish of the Reddit version, it's going to default to be the app of choice.

8

I originally used Jerboa. It was okay, but not quite what I was looking for. I've tried Connect and Liftoff and like those better. I'm waiting for Sync, as that was my Reddit app of choice.

8

Jerboa and Connect. The former has been a bit unstable recently so Connect has been my go-to most recently.

8

Jerboa had an update today. Check it out.

2

Started with Jerboa, but it started crashing on me yesterday (plus, it apparently isn't working right now with lemmy.world). So I tried Liftoff yesterday, which I'm using to comment this. Definitely going to Sync again once it's done!

8
lemmy.world

Connect and Thunder seem to work best for me. I'm on .world so Jerboa isn't an option at the moment

7
ganksyreply
kbin.social

What is the conflict with Jerboa and .world instance? I haven't had any problems on Jerboa.

1
lemmy.world

You can't login until .world updates to 1.8 if i understand it right, so it's only temporary inconvenience

5

I had not logged out so I didn't notice. I just tried logging out and now the app won't load. Odd. Good thing I can just use kbin.

1

Jerboa was updated to only work with servers on Lemmy version 0.18, a day before the update was available to admins to install. IDK why it isn't updated still, unless they're doing testing.

1
lemmy.world

Wefwef is pretty good. Liftoff as well, but I like wefwef better

7
lemmy.world

It's not a native app, it's a web app. You can add a bookmark to it on your home screen to make it seem like one.

6
vlemmy.net

So far I've tried Jerboa, liftoff and wefwef. Being a RIF user for many years I feel Jerboa is closest to the UX but I am more comfortable with wefwef. Ask me again tomorrow as I will probably try other alternatives. This is like the good ole Linux distro hopping days when I tried over 30 distros before settling with KDE neon for the last 3 years.

7
Paraldareply
lemmy.world

Try thunder. You can get the UI to match RIF really well and the gesture support for upvoting is really cool

1

Yeah I was like that too. At times I was changing distros daily.

1

Liftoff, for the moment. But I think that there is still room for a lot of improvement. It is completely normal, this is still growing ^^

7

Jerboa for now. The other ones I've tried were not information dense, only showing 3 or 4 posts on screen at a time, or had other issues. Looking forward to trying Artemis and Sync.

6
lemmy.world

You guys actually use an app? I just browse lemmy.world on my phone lol, it helps that the mobile interface is pretty good.

6

Agree, I've been having issues the apps but the website works perfectly fine to my phone.

3

Yeah, I’m gonna wait for things to settle down for a bit before trying apps out. I’m surprised how well everything works on safari so I’m not in any rush

2

6

lemmy.world

i was using jerboa until i saw this comment and i must say after using connect for a few minutes its much better! and i can actually log in!

4

Sync just announced a lemmy app is in the work! LJ is aiming to have it completed in 6 weeks.

2

It's pretty nice, but the icon on the home screen is completely blank if themed icons are enabled, how can I report this bug?

1

Wefwef until it exploted on lemmy.world, Jerboa is dead with lemmy.world as well...

Man, lemmy.world really needs to fix their instance to make it at time when "the big migration" happens.

For now I'm using Liftoff and Connect, with honorable mentions to Lemming and Thunder.

Actually I use all of them lol.

6

Jerboa, but can't wait for Sync to be released. If it's anything like the Reddit app, it'll be amazing (obviously after many iterations and testing etc).

6
lemmy.one

I was using Jerboa. But after a lot of bugs in last few versions I currently trying other apps.

Currently alternating between Connect and Wefwef

5

What version is your instance on? I thought the app crashed because world is still on version 17. But maybe it is something else? It worked great until today for me

1

Well, most of my the on Reddit was through an iPhone, so I came to like Apollo (I know us users were kinda like a rabid cult). But wefwef.app is crazy nice clone of Apollo and is a webapp so it works on Android!

5

I use Liftoff and also test Thunder. Liftoff has a complete search function and Thunder a very pleasant UI.

Jerboa doesn't work with my instance at the moment, as it still runs on version 0.17.4.

5

Using Jerboa right now, but to be frank: I haven't tried any other apps, because I am actually waiting for Slide, so whenever that launches I'll switch.

4

I actually just heard of connect in this thread, installed it, and immediately deleted jerboa. I have been daily driving lemmy for like 2 weeks now and this is the first I heard of connect. Wonder when it launched?

2

Ehhh, it crashes a lot. I still use it because it was the first one I installed and change is scary.

1

I am switching between Liftoff and Connect while I wait for Sync for Lemmy.

4

Liftoff is based on flutter have desktop version: Linux and windows. Mac version aren't listed on the github page but should be possible.

3
kbin.social

I'm not using lemmy but kbin. I'm just using the app shortcut that you can create in Chrome on Android. It works well enough for now

4

The web shortcut has been working excellent for me as well (firefox here). Be using that for time being. Monitoring Artemis for kbin though. Alpha looking VERY polished.

2

Yeah this is my "app" after someone posted about it. It works crazy good for Lemmy. Like luckily the website is mobile friendly so it looks pretty much exactly like a mobile app would complete with a lemmy icon.

Until the other apps start offering very compelling features I'll keep using it. It'll basically have any new features Lemmy adds by default the second my instance updates lol.

1
lemm.ee

At the moment I'm just using the website, added to my home screen from the firefox app. It formats just fine on mobile, and it has all the features.

4

Thats what I did as well. Installed the PWA and placed it on my homescreen, where Sync for Reddit used to be. Soon, I will switch to Sync for Lemmy. ♥️

2

The apps are developing so fast that I'm going between the apps daily.

4
BiT
lemmy.world

After a quick search, I've decided to settle on Connect. The UI looks really familiar to Infinity, which is a giant plus for me.

4

on connect after the jerboa problems, taking a look at wefwef too, but it loads in my browser... haven't dug into the UI much, but it seems decent.

1
lemmy.world

Been trying all of them but I keep going back to Liftoff. Looking forward to Sync and Boost.

4

Yep! Liftoff is the choice until Sync comes out! It does the trick.

2

Flipping between thunder and liftoff, thunder is my preferred app but it is very slow loading feeds and scrolling compared to liftoff, once this is fixed back I go.

Tried some others like connect for Lemmy but the whole UI feels 'off' can't put an exact word to it just a feeling!

4

started with connect for lemmy. which is visually very clean but it neither has an edit comment function nor a block user function yet. lemming has both functions but loks a lot more clunky.

4

Currently using a mix of Jerboa, Liftoff and web. Still waiting for the one app that can do it all.

4

I tried Jerboa and it was very similar to RiF but too basic, I'm using Thunder rn and it's also similar to RiF but has more features than Jerboa, not perfect but definitely trending that way.

I'd like to see the content and user filtering capabilities that RiF has/had, as well as the security and privacy functionality.

I know this is more of a Lemmy side feature, but I'd also love for a "Top this Hour" sort as well.

3
lemmy.world

Wefwef is good, but Sync is better imo

Edit - Got confused trying out so many. Wewef best I've found so far, Sync not yet available.

3

I am from the present and I am almost sure Sync for Lemmy might be the lemmy app soon.

1

jerboa most of the time : it's quite light (3,2Mo), it's on fdroid, it's pretty useable. But it's crashing a lot thèse days

3

Started with Jerboa but started having issues with it. Now trying Liftoff and will probably give Connect a try also.

3

Newbie here. Just installed Jerboa and two minutes later it shows "Network error". Installed Wefwef and it's ok. Taking notes to try the other ones.

Still learning about Lemmy and the communities to have an accurate opinion.

3
lemmy.world

New user here. I use the Web app for now. Connect seems to make my phone freeze for whatever reason and I can't seem to login with jerboa because "my server version is too low"...

3

Kbin so currently just using hermit to make the web app until Artemis comes out

2

I'm moving between Connect, Jerboa, Thunder at the moment, they all have their positives and I can't pick just one yet.

2

Commenting from "Connect for Lemmy". I started using Jerboa, bit it's broken just now, it'll hopefully be back in an update soon.

2

Bouncing among jerboa, web, connect, and lemmy from the browser. Everything is buggy right now so i use whichever one will load.

2

Still on my phone browser. So far not seeing any downside to it compared to PC browsing, so I think this will be fine.

2

I tried Jerboa and I couldn't login, now giving wefwef a try. Wefwef works but it's a PWA with iOS theme. I'd like to switch to App that is close to the original Android Reddit app.

2

Jerboa is the most feature-complete, but it crashes pretty often and it adopts new Lemmy API versions a bit early, so all instances don't always have the time to get updated. Besides, the look is simple and functional, but I can't say it's pretty.

So far, I really like Thunder's looks, interface and UX. It's not very intuitive, but the swipe-based gesture system is really promising, and so far it's also the prettiestt. It still lacks many important features (editing posts and comments), but they're not essential enough to prevent me from using them, and I've been mostly browsing with that in the last few days.

Liftoff looks really good as well. As others said, it looks a lot like Infinity, which was my go-to Reddit app. However, I don't like the dark theme options we have so far: dark is too light, and AMOLED is a single black screen, which makes posts hard to distinguish at a glance. Once we get more theming options, I might switch to Liftoff.

2

Only used connect so far so can't comment on the others. Feels nice and smooth, looks great and has some nice features. Liftoff seems to be the go to here, might check it out.

2

Currently the PWA for the most part. Jerboa is a close second but doesn't support gifs. I also have a custom theme on my instance which I like better than the Jerboa defaults.

2

Currently trying out Summit, seems to work fine, nice interface and easy to use.

1
lemmy.world

Personally, I use Jerboa on mobile. It's got its own problems and compatibility issues, but they're also not so significant that it makes me want to go use another app, and with lemmy.world still being on an older version that probably isn't compatible with most apps that work for 0.18 and above, the risk of breaking everything makes it not that worthwhile.

1
Moohamin12reply
lemmy.world

Ironically Jerboa didn't work for lemmy.world, which was on 0.17 when I tried re-logging in which made me want to switch.

Connect for Lemmy, Thunder and Liftoff have all been significantly superior experiences. You should try them. Jerboa felt like a downgrade after.

3

0.18 is a bit of a breaking change, due to changes in how posts and comemnts work, so newer versions of Jerboa don't work with older servers, and older versions won't work on new servers.

1

I am using jerboa but really miss redreader, the creator floated making it support lemmy and I am excited for that possibility but am sticking with jerboa for now.

1

I find Liftoff to be the smoothest and most reliable one at the moment. Wefwef has the best interface.

1

I have been happy whith jerboa, though since the latest update which doesn't work well with my instance (not updated yet) I have tried a lot of different apps. My favorites so far are jerboa (when it works), connect for lemmy and liftoff. All have pros and cons, but all seem eager to improve.

1
