They also took your FM radio
Cells phones outside the US could even record FM. All the technology that was kept from us because of things like copyright is staggering.
Yep, I remeber doing it a few times. Didn't know phones in the US couldn't record.
My dad has a Poco phone that came with FM radio from 2020 but Poco pulled an asshole move and pushed a firmware update a few years later that uninstalled the radio app on each reboot
Yeah, there have been a number of cool technologies we never got because of the copyright lobby. Hell, they almost banned the VHS player.
They are working hard on taking away SIM cards so that you can't move to another phone without your provider charging you and giving you an okay.
Yes in theory eSIM cards are better, but the way many providers handle issuing you an eSIM card is a nightmare. Whereas with a physical SIM I can just pull it out and put it in any phone that supports that provider without a problem.
I went as far as buying one of those physical SIM cards that holds e-sims on it so that I can swap that into a new phone. But newer phones are more frequently not coming with SIM slots at all.
I'm resisting esims for as long as possible.
Nanosims provide this key feature where I can put my sim in a cheap 20$ flip phone when I go snowboarding or kayaking and don't want to risk breaking my smart phone.
This also is a convenient way to get Google, and tech, and social media noise away from me for a short time.
I also noticed there is a complete lack of esim capable dumb phones. This has me starting to question the motivation behind esim.
Ehh...esims have their upsides (like instant delivery from your cell provider).
And for your case: Multi-sims (with telephone) are a thing.
How often you need that though? I mean ordering a SIM. And if you need it immediately you just go to one of provider's kiosks (which is plenty of them) and you get one instantly.
As for multi sims, that's useful especially if you travel, but on the other hand there are phones with multi SIM slots. I have one right now. The sun card slot is just longer and you can put multiple.
The whole esim reminds me when I was at Verizon when they still used CDMA. Phones didn't have SIM and you had to call provider to make a change. So to me it feels like a step backward.
I think what Cape is doing is innovative wrt esims.
But I'd still lose out in flip phones atm. I'd be totally fine beaming my esim over to the flip phone in a p2p manner and beaming it back when I am done. Its just a matter of, hopefully, someone making such a flip phone.
If it's just for a throwaway situation like risky adventures in the mountains, I guess some refurbished device that is 3/4/5g capable would suffice me. Not like you can use 2G nowadays anyway.
I like eSIMs now because I can get a different account every month, data only and then I use jmp.net to have SMS and voice call services with a permanent number for when I need that. Its cheaper then anything else and more private too.
I don't know who you've been getting your esims from but it I've used simjuno and nadanada both are pretty easy to setup.
As soon as the ability to just physically remove the SIM is gone, the big providers will add locks in software to enshittify the experience.
That's a given. I can see Apple becoming a mobile service provider and locking all iPhones users to them, for example.
eSIM experience will only stay smooth as the alternative physical SIM option exists.
They've also done stuff like that with physical sims too. Obviously they couldn't prevent you from taking out the sim card, but carrier locking has been/is a thing.
And there's been times where x phone was only available with y carrier for a while.
Apple always sells their phones unlocked when you buy directly from them. I don’t ever see them ever going back on that.
Lock ins are only a problem if you sign a contract to get your phone costs subsidised. The solution is not physical sims, its stop buying over priced shiney things with a contract just cuz MaBell will give you a "deal". You can almost always get a better deal yourself if you are willing to look for it.
I pay in a year less then most ppl pay for a month of the same exact service, but instead of paying T-Mobile or Verizon $40 I pay $4 for the same amount of data. Instead of buying the latest phone I get a used one that will get updates for the next 3+ years.
I don't see how apple or Verizon or anyone else could really ever make this setup not work for me unless they lobby congress to destroy MVNOs and used phone resale.
Won't happen because then the major carriers will throw a fit.
That sounds like a major pain in the ass.
A lot less pain then getting stuck paying off $1000 phone and over $300 for service. I guess some people just prefer to get ripped off
What does the cost of the phone have to do with changing your plan monthly? You can not get ripped off and not have to do all that hoop jumping each month.
Well I dont have to change it monthly if i don't want to but I happen to want to because it makes it harder to track and create a profile If I do. My actual phone/SMS service stays the same either way and routes over XMPP.
The cost of the phone is why most average people get suckered in to long term contracts.
Well related because just buying a phone outright in my area is not easy. I have to ship the phone direct from manufacturer because all the major retailers refuse to sell unless you buy through a contract.
Certain wireless providers ban phones they don't like anyway, even if it's unlocked. It's depressing.
Always buy unlocked. I transferred carriers on the bus one afternoon and by the time I was home, it was done and I had already deactivated my old account. Kept my mincer and everything. It was even simpler because I have a dual eSIM. Once it was done, I deleted my original eSIM. There’s also the big advantage of using dual eSIM when traveling internationally as you can just activate foreign networks immediately.
But even if you don’t buy unlocked, the carrier has to unlock your phone if you’ve been with them for like 60 days or something according to the FCC. My friend couldn’t get his phone unlocked so he threatened to report them to the FCC and BOOM. Unlocked remotely. It was crazy that it had to go that far.
Locked phones aren't really a thing in Canada; they are all unlocked. That doesn't dictate the eSIM switching process be easy between devices though :/
Also, wtf is with the "only one or two eSIMs" limit. That physical eSIM card I bought will fit as many fit in storage; something like 8 apparently. I hate arbitrary "no, only X" limits without a justification.
There is only zero, one, and N (more than can be used because of physical or natural limits) in my mind. :P
what the fuck? I stopped on "no jack for you sir" phase, no doubt I am not going for another smartpone when the current one dies out
The first phone I got with an e-SIM crashed during startup. After it cooked my old SIM card. It was so arduous to get fixed. So fucking stupid. This tech isn’t ready for prime time if it can’t handle the phone crashing at specific points.
Take away your ability to install apps that aren't stamped approved.
Oh wait, one did it over a decade ago and the other is about to start enforcing it.
Oh, and there's pretty much only the two of them.
Is there any way to stop this?
Use graphene OS or deal with the "advanced flow" process once
I understand but the problem is my phone in not supported sadly
Pretty sure only pixels are, but Motorola was working on one. It's fucking stupid that the only phone they support is manufactured by the company that is causing most of the problem. Their phone sucks too.
I agree I hope something changes in the future
Next flagship Motorola will have official GrapheneOS support. It will be very expensive. After that, hopefully more mid-level Motorola phones will be supported too.
OR - they could dumb down grapheneOS so that it can run on a lot of other phones ?? ? maybe? yes? I get the desire to be able to encrypt the entire drive - that IS important, but I think its more important to get the functionality of graphene provides to more people. A non-google based phone is pointless on only google based hardware.
The flagship Motorola also sucks, missing a bunch of features that even my $150 Samsung J3 had
You can still find LineageOS for your device. Check their wiki, they support A LOT of devices.
Well I guess I am not lucky because I even checked there and still my device is not supported.
See if there is an XDA page for your device. If it has a qualcomm chip, there's likely some custom roms for it.
I searched and I found nothing, seems like I am cursed
Click the "Show legacy phones" or something similar. Some cellphones were supported, but no longer receive updates, so they do not appear in the supported list unless you explicitly tell the page to show them for you.
I check the lineage devices list very frequently, only Pixel phones are getting support mostly, maybe fairphone too
I bet there's a single Fairphone in my whole country tho
I got a cheap used Pixel at the tail end of support, it'll last a few more years. After that I hope there will be more Motorola phones than the currently planned.
That's not really a hardware solution
Not really. The companies will continue removing end-user ownership, even if they move to alternatives. The profits must flow, the number must go up.
If people start to boycott it can make a change
Boycott the technology they have forced on humanity. There's a growing number of basic tasks that require a device and there's a large portion of the population that just doesn't care enough to not fall in line.
True, no change can be done without a will that comes from most of the people, but that's life, somehow you need to feel like a feather moved by other people's choices.
Focusing on what we can do is a better choice.
With how apple shit is treated like divine ambrosia and, in many places, a status symbol, I seriously doubt any boycott against them will have any effect.
Android is like Windows in the 1990s. It's fucking everywhere and literally too big to boycott. Most OEMs also prefer to play ball with Google and keep the phones locked because it's profitable for them as well. Boycotting a specific OEM might cause some damage to them, but it won't budge Google. It's good that some companies are making phones that ship with more open android clones, but those phones are still too expensive for most people to buy
Capitalism made them so big.
They will try to discourage use of on-screen keyboards (making them dumber and less reliable) to force you to use AI dictation and sell you more headphones.
Damn, that's so viable. don't give em ideas
At that point I think I would just go back to a brick phone again. I used one as my only phone for the past several years before getting a second hand fairphone with calyx, I really don't have a problem with going back.
90% of the reason for the fairphone is I work in office now and I get bored for an hour lunchbreak. But being able to send my partner more higher quality cat pics is a bonus too.
And pay $3 to subscribe to the on-screen keyboard as an added function.
(Fuck, I'm sorry I'm giving them ideas)
I recently lost the voice assistant on my phone because it got replaced by Google's stupid AI shit, which I refuse to use. Now the old assistant, which shipped with this phone and which it has used for the years that I've had it, is "unsupported by this device." Don't even need to buy a new phone for them to take features away from you.
Next thing to take: unlockable bootloaders so you can no longer install an alt OS.
Pretty much done on most smartphones.
Then buy a fairphone or other phones that do allow it.
Installing GrapheneOS on my pixel was easy, but I had to go through hoops to get my old Motorola G7 running iirc PostmarketOS (now called Nura).
Had to install some program on my desktop so I could ask my connected phone for a series of unique character strings through the terminal, then enter them in a specific order on Motorola's website where they check if your phone is applicable for unlocking bootloading. It says no, so I look around and find a list of carrier codes that indicate whether or not it should be, and mine should. I ended up finding some forum posts from years ago talking about how the website is wrong and lies to you, and that if you change the url that it gives for applicable devices to include your phone's strings then it'll correctly identify the device as applicable for bootloader unlocking. Finally got then to send me an email with the unique code for my phone, and I was able to follow the instructions to install PostmarketOS.
and then hardware gated LLMs forcing you to use goverment approved AI in your phone to do everything
what do you mean next? it's already happening lol
I miss the headphone jack so much.
That's still a hard requirement for me, but I don't mind using older "tech".
I totally get it but I have been pretty happy with the earbuds to be honest. I know that's a bit of a hot take but I always wanted wireless in the past and I use my jabra's on a daily basis. Still, I dont like the removal of useful features, we could easily have wireless earbuds and still have headphone jacks for fuck sake
Same. It took about a decade after the widespread removal of headphone jacks before wireless headphones became a reliable replacement. Now I can't imagine being tethered to my phone.
Next they will add more AI and more tracking and more ads.
I recently upgraded my phone, and the lack of a 3.5mm jack really hurts. But at least I have an excuse not to listen to my sister's 20 min Whatsapp voice messages...
One other thing I really miss is the LED indicator that you have new notifications when the screen is off.
Well that's your problem. You're supposed to be engaging with content 24/7. The screen turning off at all sounds like a user error.
I used to love my multicoloured LED on my Nexus 4. I could configure it to flash in a different colour depending upon which app the notification was coming from.
both from Wikipedia. tl;dr. modem screens can be switched on partially and do so efficient enough to replace LEDs. if and how they do depends on the os
It's so much less convenient tho. The led meant you knew at a glance that there was something for you, you didn't have to look at the screen long enough for it to trigger the screen, then process a whole* bunch of info BEFORE determining if there was something for you.
Huh? That doesnt make any sense. For AOD to work without draining battery way too much it has to be OLED of some kind (or eink). But still to this day something like half the phones are built with LCDs, even moreso in 2019.
Writing this on my $100 LCD phone from last year without a notification LED. Actually had one on my previous one. And I hated it, though thats just me, I hate LEDs in general and always disable/disconnect/tape over them so that my room doesnt look like disco christmas party at night.
Cheap solution, whatever your charger port is, they make that to 3.5mm
I loved my Xperia M and its huge ahh LED
With wireless charging existing, I wouldn't be surprised if they got rid of the USB port as well, and sold phones with no ports at all, just wireless everything.
And it will still be out of warranty for liquid damage, while a Casio with user replaceable battery is 100m resist.
If I had one wish, it would be for Casio to make a dumbphone
I miss the slide out qwerty keyboard my old HTC Inspire had.
I want a sidekick lx with a touch screen, a modern processor, and an unlocked bootloader
I miss the IR blaster so much. It was great to not only be able to control my own devices, but also be able to change TV's in waiting rooms or gyms when they were stuck on shit like Fox News.
Xiaomi phones have it. It's great when you can't find your remote control down the back of the sofa.
Xiaomi a different channel!
Not sure why this is a "shit post." This actually happened.
"Cameras always on"
For the user experience.

Aye you still got volume buttons they can take one of them.
Press for volume up, double press for volume down.
Double presses. Up up. No... Double press again. Down. Good. Double press again, up up.
Tbh if you held it to turn sound all the way down, and a short press raised sound, it might work OK.
Its now also combined with the power button. Was that a long press for volume down or medium press for power off?
They remove the math-based image processing and replace it with AI, making all your photos invalid as any kind of evidence.
Whoa, got an article or something? I’d love to read more about this
No article.
Just observing the images with "AI camera" phones having weird shapes when zoomed in.
Of course I don't think they have made it all AI yet, but I have a feeling the current trend will make it harder to use as proof down the line.
If you hate cops, that honestly sounds like a good thing
I don't see how.
Any camera footage they have will be considered as evidence and any one of ours won't.
It's the same as the "your word vs my word" logic all over again.
Works the other way around too, though. Cop abuses can just be relegated to being AI doctored.
Ooh, maybe a dedicated AI button right next to the power button that can't be turned off or used for any other function that you accidentally hit all of the time.
Superglue.
Better yet not to buy such a phone in the first place.
My LG G8 all but got "upgraded" to this, it was a dedicated Google assistant button, right next to the power switch, and the assistant became AI. Thankfully, while you were unable to remap the button you could still just turn it off, I did that pre AI because I just never used assistant and kept accidentally hitting the button. There are a lot of things I miss about that phone, the AI button is not one of them.
I miss the IR blaster so much, I used it constantly
Can you explain this to me? I’ve never heard of this as a feature and literally cannot tell if this is a joke or real.
it turned your phone into a universal remote. useful for when you've lost your tv remote and such
You can also screw with TVs in public locations which was quite fun.
I have it on my OnePlus Nord 5 but a few months back they killed the OnePlus brand in Europe and North America. :(
Now all that's left of OnePlus is overpriced Realme phones and Oppo, which is outside of my budget...
Luckily this phone will probably last me the next 4 years or so, since I just bought it before they started killing the brand, which was not that long ago.
It was an IR led tied into the phone. You could record and send out IR signals to anything with a receiver like tvs, appliances, etc.
For a little while you could buy an IR blaster that plugged into a headphone jack.
No more touch screens! You press a button to turn it on and you watch/look at/read whatever we give you to watch/look at/read! But first, point the camera at your ID and bank cards.
The charging port will be subscription-based.
I'm actually a tiny bit shocked apple phones haven't gone wireless charging only and had no ports tbh
Yeah I thought they would do that to avoid USBC in the EU
I'm sure they've considered it, but there's some technical reason not to (yet).
I wonder why, if it wasn't for charging they could leave another port on it still if it needs one for some reason. Or partially seal it before the customer gets hold of it. Or even leave a metal ring around each camera hole and map that to USB pins, phones managed with micro USB for a long time so that could cover any internal need they have for a port.
They're going to integrate AI and make it non-removable. "You need this."
I read iOS 27 as this, and I didn't update. But they're going to force me.
Don't need a phone if you never leave your house.
Galaxy brain
But how are you going to rot in bed then?
The old fashioned way, I'll cry and wank
Take lessons from Grandpa Joe.
Laptops exist
Is "Galaxy Brain" Samsung's new AI? /s
Crossposting something from almost 3 years ago. Bold, OP.
4th top all-time in that comm too
We'll add five cameras! And guess what, if even one camera fails, we'll brick all five! Isn't that great! More points of failure for everyone ❤️
But those cameras are awesome? I need wide angle, normal and zoom. Ideally even "super zoom" like 5x or 10x or in absolute like 200 mm in 35mm equivalent. And I have not seen a case where one broken makes all of them non-functional?
At least on my s24 is the case. I get camera failure when trying to use them, and running hardware check shows only the telephoto lens having issues. Thankfully for some reason using the camera app in messages let's my use the macro lens still. I have the replacement part to fix, just been lazy 😂
My BlackBerry had a notification LED that I could set to different colors and based on the type of notification. Made it super easy to see if there was something I needed to look at without picking it up. I miss that.
My Motorola Moto E2 had a notification LED but for some reason it was disabled in software and I never saw it until I installed LineageOS. I was shocked seeing a random white light turning on under the bezel
Early Android phones had that, too. A very neat feature they got rid of.
The IR blaster lets you use your phone like a universal remote. I can control my TV, my air conditioner, and most importantly, some stores' unsecured commercial displays with my phone.
I like that last part the most I kind of want to get one now.
The IR blaster was an IR LED you coud use to turn your phone into a remote control. Also for direct data transfer, though that one was iffy.
They added 5 cameras because people use iPhones as social media machines and Apple knows it.
I had idiots argue with me you can easily pop out and replace batteries. There's a reason why it's a big selling point on the Fairphone.
You could at one point. That's why the Samsung Galaxy became popular initially.
I guess it depends on their definition of easy. Paying a tech in a mall $100 to replace it might count as easy for some. You and I might have a standard of easy where we can do it ourselves in 5 seconds.
I've been dipping my toes into entry-level audiophile stuff, and I know the 4.4 mm jack is unnecessary for most use cases, but still I think a dap/phone combo with that built in and open bootloader for custom roms would be pretty neat.
Edit: and before anyone comments, yes I know my best bet in that direction right now would be to get an LG V20, put LineageOS on it, and use a dongle. I have a dongle. Just saying, a thing with it built in would be fun.
Also, what can I do with all these lenses in cameras now?
The thing that frustrates me most about all the lenses is they don't use them most of the time. I have a dedicated 3x zoom lens, but usually when I set my camera to 3x, it still uses the primary camera because it's resolution is higher and the sensor size is greater. The phone realizes cropping the primary sensor with a digital zoom will get a better shot.
I use an old v20 with lineage os as my "work" phone (because there is no fucking way I'm putting their spyware on my actual phone), and boy is it slow.
That's good to know. I have no plans of getting one, I just know that's a popular go-to for anyone wanting an Android phone with high quality audio.
I always wanted a phone with an IR blaster, especially after smartphones became a thing, so I could just use my phone as a universal remote for my TV and stereo.
I used to wrote mobile apps for a large cable company whose named rhymes with "bombast". At one point I got the gig writing their TV guide-type app for Blackberry. Nobody else at the entire company had any idea of how to do it since none of the built-in controls for Blackberry development (called "fields") could do anything like what was needed. I had a lot of experience with animation so I was able to do everything with custom-drawn graphics. I had a great time since I had zero interference from managers and I made the app do everything I always wanted a guide app to do. It could even change the channel for you on your own TV, not using IR (which Blackberrys did have) but sending the control signals through wifi to the Bombast servers. At one point, executives from RIM visited the office trying to convince large clients to continue developing apps for their platform; we showed them my app and they were blown away, saying "how is this even possible on a Blackberry?"
The punchline, of course, is that this was 2011 and Blackberry was plummeting rapidly to its doom. My guide was on the market for just a few months but nobody ever really downloaded Bombast apps (even for iPhone or Android -- their numbers were essentially faked for a bunch of reasons) so it died. I did continue using it myself for my own TV until Bombast sunsetted the API it used. That was a sad day for me.
It is insane to me that today, in 2026, the channel guide on my parents' cable box is so much fucking worse -- and slower -- of an experience than an app I wrote 15 years ago for mobile devices that were almost 10 years old themselves at that time.
I had one, as with everything that is a touch screen, not being able to use it accurately without staring at it makes the reality of using it a lot worse than the idea. Not saying it isn't a decent backup but I would never want it as my main remote.
I had one in the late 2010, besides pranks I didn't use it much, not very convenient, it's much faster to just grab the remote, than grab the phone, unlock it, find the app, launch it and find the button on the screen.
I would have used it to change the channel in waiting rooms where they locked out or disabled the controls on the TV and have it stuck on FOX.
Yeah, pranks. In this case, gutenpranken.
I lowkey kinda wish Fairphone would make a new phone that has an aux port for the craic. And an FM radio built in too. Use the aux port as an antenna like how older phones did before they stopped doing it.
I hate when people take away the freedom that people already have and claim it's in the name of improvement. This applies in technology or anything.
Always on mic and forward facing camera
Lidar scanning every room you walk into.
Something I “love” about my current phone is it has like a 60gb hard drive. This could hold all of the photos I will ever take for the rest of my life. But it keeps trying to put them on the cloud, and then it complains that I’m running out of space because my free 5 gigs on the cloud are full. I never wanted to save anything to the cloud in the first place… just save them into my phone… this is fucking stupid.
Pardon me, we'd like to spy on you, but space is expensive, could you possibly be willing to pay for us to look through your photos?
Microsoft onedrive is the same shit. Don't you want to keep backups? It literally costs us pennies, how about $100 a year?
Syncing to the (i)cloud is a setting you can uncheck. You can ask chatgpt how to do that, or maybe your mom. Btw, a 60GB drive is not enough, by far. My fullframe camera disapproves of your lack of awareness... ;-)
Disable backup in Google/Apple Photos then?
https://developer.android.com/google/play/integrity/overview
Smell-o-vision. If it became real I would send people videos of people farting as a joke.
What about telecommunication companies conspiring with phone developers to force communication into the different buckets of data, voice, and text and then charge us for each?
This reminds me when cellphone companies used to charge for sms sent lmao
That's what I'm talking about, before cell phones were a thing, they weren't a thing. When they were becoming a thing they specifically conspired to segregate data into different streams so they could rip us off. And yeah 30 cents to send a 140 Byte chunk of data
My phone has an ir blaster, but the software is awful so I'm not going to call it out as a success here. It is a flagship, though.
Just because they don't know what the cameras are for doesn't mean they don't use them
The cameras are for different light and motion conditions. It happens automatically
Really? I thought they were just different focal lengths, so that you can "seamlessly" zoom across a range that a single lens wouldn't be able to manage.
Correct. And very useful.
Unihertz titan 2 elite has plenty of buttons
I love modern phone cameras. My Pixel 10 pro takes pretty amazing pics and I'm on graphene so I don't worry about being watched. I do miss headphone jacks. I've been thinking about getting a portable DAC/amp and going back to wired headphones but I'm already carrying 2 devices because of my diabeetus, and I'm likely going to have a work phone soon as well.
DAC drains your battery like crazy. At least mine does when paired with Sennheiser HD6xx. You might want a battery powered one.
Activate Multi-User mode under GrapheneOS + add your work profile there.
PS: There are a few good headphone adapters w/power delivery available
Forced age attestation on unlock. Camera always on.
The only thing I like are multiple cameras. They can be useful. Fuck the rest though.
Can't the Fairphone do some of these things still?
The new 6 has everything but aux. That one I do miss like once a year where I randomly need to interface with something, for home stuff I bought two adapters and got no problem.
On one hand I like when we had removable batteries, jacks etc. But on the other hand, I like how computers (smartphones) got so easy to handle by the masses.
Redmi still has microSD slot, 2 sim cards, IR blaster, headphone jack.
What you should worry more about is not this, it is how locked it is to run your own software in it. Want to unlock bootloader? then create an account, have a sim inserted, apply for unlock using internet, wait 14 days or maybe 32, who knows? wipe all your data. and voila, you unlocked your phone.
Also the absence of screws and use of glue. Want to fix the wobbly USB input yourself? nah, just take it to a repair shop.
the uneducated masses should never have been allowed to be marked to
If you choose between iPhone and Samsung, then yeah. There are decent smartphone manufacturers out there that have all these things and more. But if you're going to choose the duopoly then don't complain when they do whatever they want. You chose them.
My phone has an IR blaster, headphones jack, toolless dual Sim slot, 4 hardware buttons, one of which is programmable to three different functions (single press, double press, and longpress), waterproof, 10,000mAh battery, reverse charging (I can charge other people's phones with mine) and a thermal camera. And it cost less than one of the flagship Samsung phones.
If you want a phone with removable battery and a hardware numeric keypad, you can get one of those too. You've just got to look further than like, best buy or whatever.
You know, you can sit outside in nature, enjoying the lovely world around us while fishing, you dont even have to beg the question "ooooo aaaa what phone do u have" for bait
I'm not trying to sell anyone my phone, or be a shill for the company that made it. I'm just saying, if you want a particular feature, or set of features, just search for "smartphone headphones jack programmable key feature feature feature" whatever your needs are, and you'll find a range of options. Then it's up to you to vet your results, check reviews, watch some videos, and decide if it's right for you.
Ok buddy, it's still super weird and comes off as begging for interaction to smugly state how nice your phone is while refusing to mention what it is.
Like if we were talking breakfast, and I chimed in with
I'd rightfully be called a jagoff for describing a food truck's breakfast burrito in such wanker terms.
Are you asking me out on a breakfast date?
What phone
It's a Ulefone Armour 27T Pro but I'd only recommend it if you know how to use adb or uad to remove the bloatware and junk apps that are baked into it, because it comes with a lot of garbage. The hardware is very good but the baked in apps and other stuff are really bad.
Probably some Ulefone model, from the sound of it.
Sorry to be like this but AKSHAULLY I use all three of my cameras.
I do too.
And all 3 combined, work worse than a single camera on my older phone, which was the same price range, but further in the past.
They reset all your settings after an upgrade and remove the options to turn them back on.
"Where are my testicles, Summer?"
I wonder what the new XCover FR, which is assumed to be in development, will be like
Anyone got experience with the latest Fairphones, whether they are as glitchy as some report?
Fp6 user here. It was pretty buggy in the beginning but now everything seems fine (occassionaly something minor but could just be android).
Biggest disadvantage is a worse camera, battery power and compute power for the price, but it is all acceptable.
Could you tell me more about the disadvatanges?
Maybe with some examples.
Does the battery ever not last a whole day for example?
Is the worse camera only about quality or does it take unreasonably longer to process combined with lower compute power?
It's got a rubbish camera. It's basically 3 x zoom and that's it, as long as you're taking photos in bright lighting conditions, aren't particularly bothered about really high quality colour reproduction, aren't planning to zoom in after the fact (it ain't got enough pixels for that), it's okay.
But taking photographs at night even in fairly well illuminated streets is basically impossible. Not only do the photos not have great contrast but they're also really noisy.
Obviously that's only important to me, for me personally I'd rather have a better quality camera than the latest and greatest processor.
curious question: did you consider carrying around a small camera if taking pictures is so important for you? i am weighting pros and cons of this solution myself and slowly but surely coming to that breaking point...
I've yet to find a camera that's both small enough that it isn't a significant presence on my person, while at the same time a quality that it's significantly better than something on a high end smartphone.
You can get some very good SLRs but they're not exactly compact. Plus they're really expensive and because they're bigger more likely to get knocked. I suppose I can get really bougie and get an old compact film camera and then scan the negatives. But I think that would get really expensive.
i went the film way... i had pentax mx first (about 400g with pancake lens), that was too big so i went with olympus ees2. much faster for quick snaps but still big. even rollei 35s i carry now (as small as it gets) is still a bit too cumbersome to handle if it is inside my backpack...all of these are good solution for a photo walk but not fast enough for quick snaps. so now I'm thinking really small digicam... something fitting inside my pocket or something with rugged design i can use anywhere. any newer compact is going to run circles around even high-end smartphone... but price is a consideration.
with film the price is not an issue if you enjoy developing it yourself (which i do) and will buy film in bulk. with k400 and d76 i can get to 6-8 cents per picture when shooting half-frame (try dividing a price of a good dslr by the average amount of pics you make with it over its life and you will get pretty close to that).
Battery last me almost always everyday except with excessive use.
Snapshots with camera takes a bit longer and like the other guy said it ain't great (personally acceptable but that is opinion).
And specific example compute power I really don't have, I am not the biggest power user anymore. I can say for typical daily tasks it is totally fine.
I just remind myself that making something cheap, repairable, better for enviroment and no slavery just isn't as good as the slave made phones hahaha.
Yeah I did look at one of the fair phones and my big problem with them is that they're just cheap androids (cheap in terms of quality, not in terms of price) at the end of the day. I get that's the point to a certain extent, but it would be nice if they had a more premium version with things like a better camera, and magsafe charging. I'd happy enough to give them more money but they just make the one model.
I agree, but they already have trouble supporting their current phones so I get why they just have one.
I have the FP6+, currently running iodeos and I'm very happy with it.
Literally
There needs to be a second technological revolution.
I have a headphone jack. Maybe you just have a peasant phone.
the samsung a57 is the first one i ever had w/o an sd slot. has enough internal ram to equal the sd i had in the previous model though
They'll replace the latest foldable hinge technology with low grade sand because Apple made theirs out of low grade sand.
I noticed a lot of issues and begging to update after I taped up the cameras and put a water resistant case blocking the microphone. I guess the phone really relies on that stuff more than before instead of the light sensor. Fun point, if it's about dark the issues are less because the clock is around dark time.
people don't use their cameras?
I would rather have all other features.
I use one camera. I don’t really see the need for more than that on my phone. If I wanted to do actual photography I would get a DSLR
Extra slippery materials
Actually they put the IR blaster in the OnePlus 13r. But yeah, they took the rest. Fuckheads
maybe just don't buy the phones which do that?!
The IR blaster was the first casualty for me. They just stopped putting them in any phones at all around 2014 or so. I bought an aftermarket one and it was basically just spyware with an LED that didn't work.
So just saying "uh, then, like, maybe just don't buy phones like that! Duh." isn't going to bring back half of these options already.
The IR tech in a flipper-zero is more inline and generally useful than some of those old phones. Given the shenanigans that device causes, its probably best it does not have a sim card.
(Ive had realitives get unbelieveably pissed off that their TV remotes could be "stolen", they arnt that bright and I tried to explain how "universal remote codes" work... I think they just wanted to be angry)
I used to have a Casio watch with a remote control in the early 2000s and can confirm there were plenty of shenanigans to be had.
... Wut?
Like, I get it. But still. WTF....
I'm so sad I missed out on IR blasters, it's such a useful thing I'd love to have in my phone
Get an m5stick or a flipper zero
They were awesome. Your phone controlled everything around you. The number of times I just slowly turned down the TVs in a bar to a reasonable level made it worth it.
Apparently they have usb-c ones now, but the main problem is that all the apps for them are so loaded with bloat and/or malware they're worse than going without one.
So, what should I buy then?
sure, i probably missed the buttons and battery, definetely the jack and microsd, maybe IR blaster (kinda useless but cool as TV remotes; that blew my mind when i was little), but really some things here are exaggerated
My treo650 and novviremote (= those were the fucking days. I could speed type like no tomorrow on that keyboard, my homies at Treonauts..... GetJar for the weird games....
Man, I miss those days. I still have a microsd slot, I have two Sim slots, I use my infrared night camera to take pictures of my dark brown(what everyone calls a black) void kitty, I use my wide angle lens to take pictures in the city, I love the switch off for what they can do but the orientation/layout is shit.
Headphones that use the 3.5mm standard can be adapted to the phone charger and type c to 3.5mm is fuckin cheap as fuck. You can also get type c to SD card slot you can quite literally use a hard drive on a phone, I've used my computer mouse on my phone using type c to usb a. Again, fucking cheap as fuck for those things on Amazon. Look around.
Removable battery isn't as big of a flex as you think when power banks are a thing.
Removable battery isn’t as big of a flex as you think when you have another battery"
Exactly. Pop one out, pop a fully charged one in. Instant fully charged phone. It was glorious. Expandable storage being taken across the board is quite literally criminal. The phone companies colluded to be able to sell more space for a premium 10x what an equivalent SD card would cost. It's bullshit. EU, get your shit together and force expandable storage and removable batteries. Lord knows the US won't.
What in saying is modern day, it wouldn't make a difference if you had a case full of charged ready to go batteries vs a power bank that will speed charge a phone for you. Unless you're a phone addict, you're not charging your phone 70x times a day anyways.
In fact, with all this environmental crap, wouldn't it be against the cause to start wanting to produce more lithium filled waste?
Also I remeber the first versions of the power bank, the back in the day ones, that everyone compared them to having a spare battery or one of those and I rmemebr how they used to be too, a janky multipurpose charger on a charger port that was a short ass wire attached to like an oval egg looking thing that was ran off of, if memory serves 4 aa's or a 9volt.
I had one and it came in handy at the time when I used my mp3 player.
Still the questions some 20 years later remains: Does a power bank make a difference than spare batteries that are charged?
I had 2 spare phone batteries and they would run out quick, it made more sense to just have spare aa's for the power bank than to buy another battery.
The removable battery is important so if your battery performance degrades due to age, you can get a new battery. Megacorp phones are designed to be thrown away before your battery degrades. But My fairphobe is designed to be used for at least 5 years, and in a few years when the battery life is suffering, I'll get a new battery, but keep the phone.
So batteries are actually based on something called charging cycles which is why power saving mode is important to use because it's not power saving, it's battery saving.
Every time you let your phone go from 0% to 100% then back down to 0% that's a full cycle. Most phones are designed to be charged about 10,000 times, from 0% to 100% back down to 0%. That's 10,000 days, that's 27 years.
That's based on continuous, non-cumulative usage of battery life, so in one charge of using it straight and the battery death happens in 3 hours straight and then you charge it again. Which means it's life is lowered by like ⅔'s
Cumulative battery usage is based on day-to-day and that would technically be a cycle. So 50% one day, 20% the next and 30% the final day. That to me doesn't have much of a good explanation on the actual charging cycles that to me is more based on use which does play into battery life.
Idk man, they nerf the software and speed if you have a mainstream phone, like asshole or samesong, so a new battery isn't gonna solve that.
Thinking back to my ngage qd, having a battery cradle was chill but with all the technology we have today, it's stupid to want to keep the same phone for more than 6 years at a time. I think given he economics behind phones people clutch on to them for dear life because of how expensive they are to find just as good if not a better phone than the one that's in your hands, other than that upgrading to after market unlocked phones is still the way.
Edit: Even though it would cost a lot manufacturers can still replace the battery. It's not impossible to get a battery in a sealed phone replaced.
That's a lot of words to condescendingly say "nuh-uh".
In fact, with all this environmental crap, wouldn’t it be against the cause to start wanting to produce more lithium filled waste?
you sure know what your powerbanks are, right?
Shit take lol I'm a professional photographer and at this point my phone is one of my main cameras
On long distance hikes I don't even carry a real camera anymore. Not worth the weight
The raw files from my iPhone are basically just as good as the raws from my fuji x100f. The only reason to use that camera now is for the analog tactile feel
And this is coming front someone who thought phone would never replace real camera
Edit: have downvoters seen 28 years later? Filmed on a phone.

Headphone jack sucks and most of the other things are useless. Big screen and good camera is all people need
I don’t want a big screen. My hands are bigger than nearly every other person’s I’ve seen this far and I yearn for an edge-to-edge iPhone 5. My friend has all his old phones and I held it not long ago and was like “yes, this.”
Big screens are just heavy as fuck and are too easy to look at for what a goddamn phone is. I had a 3GS once and it was fine, no one died, and now a regular phone is what was once called a “Plus” or a “Max” or whatever else.
A phone that would fit in my cup holder, and I could reach the other corner of the screen with my thumb-without moving the phone around was so much more usable.
My phone still fits a cupholder but otherwise yea I get what you mean. My hands are bigger than most people’s whole face and yet I still got stretch or fully two-hand the device? And what the hell are normal people supposed to do?! The vast majority has hands significantly smaller so they’re just always aboard the struggle bus?
So buy one of the small screen phones? They're available.
Less and less so, and they’re usually lacking in features. I want a good phone with a reasonable screen size, not a phone that got worse for no reason other than it got smaller.
Big screen? For what? Huge rounded corners?
They dont have computers so most tasks are done on mobile
because my phone runs out of battery after like 2 hours of 5G, and the external battery packs are sketchy and fragile
A large music library won't fit on 512 GB internal storage and I want to listen to it offline, which is like 50% of what I use my phone for right now
Buy a tablet if you need a portable big screen
