dragged the whole world out of the Middle Ages

Doubt it can take credit for that when it denied the very same self determination it claimed was a core value in the territories it administered.

It was the capital extracted via colonialism and slavery that allowed the first Industrial Revolution to happen. The raw materials came from the colonies and the colonies acted as a consumer market for machine finished goods. A ton of intellectual property were stolen from colonized / occupied peoples, which were then poorly credited once spit out of a machine more efficiently than human hands/artisans (not dissimilar to AI). Sugar refining and cotton dyeing are just two prominent example.

Essentially this part of the world was the global 1% while everyone else toiled.

Tl;dr: Colonial powers were the Altman's, Zukerberg's and Bezos' of their time. Let's not rewrite history in their favor.

The industrial revolution was the transition from the late-renaissance to the early-modern [early-modern to mid-modern] era.

It wasn't the end of the Middle Ages. That came with the invention of the printing press and the neoclassical revival of greco-roman styles of art/architecture/literature/philosophy.

Edit: slight correction

shawn1122reply
sh.itjust.works

The argument is even weaker if we go to before the Industrial Revolution. The Renaissance and scientific revolution happened on the shoulders of intellectual property borrowed/taken from global civilizational giants and on the backs of forced / coerced labor in colonial occupied territories. The luxury of having intellectuals in coffee shops pondering how society should be structured could have only happened by exploited labor in the colonies propping up their livelihoods and arguably through contact with pre-civilizational (indigeneous) societies in the Americas.

Two civilizational giants that come to mind are China and India. Chinese scholars, as you know, invented paper without which the printing press is not possible in the way that we conceive it today. India invented the numerical notation system that allows us to communicate large values and datasets in an efficient manner.

If not for the work of Brahmagupta, al-Khwarizmi and (most importantly for Europe) Fibonacci this notation system would have never been accepted as the number system we use today was considered to be sacrilege and mystical in Europe for centuries.

For paper, as with numerical notation, the practice was brought to Europe with advancement by Islamic civilizations. Cai Lun, Zuo Bo and Fan Ye were crucial in the development of paper which spread globally as we perceive it today.

The colonial narrative, for hundreds of years was that this progress happened in isolation and that was used to justify racism and genocide. I'm glad that in 2026 we are able to unravel such narratives at the seams.

-1
sopuli.xyz

I wasn't commenting on the relative strength/weakness of the other commenter's argument (because they were clearly shitposting and not asserting a thesis proposal); I was merely pointing out that they were talking about the end of the Middle Ages, which was centuries before the industrial revolution, so you bringing that up was kind of irrelevant.

and on the backs of forced / coerced labor in colonial occupied territories. The luxury of having intellectuals in coffee shops pondering how society should be structured could have only happened by exploited labor in the colonies propping up their livelihoods and arguably through contact with pre-civilizational (indigeneous) societies in the Americas.

I don't think you understand the difference between the "Middle Ages," "Renaissance," and "Early Modern" eras...

::: spoiler slight correction: I even misspoke to your advantage because the industrial revolution actually came after the Early Modern era, on the cusp of the Mid-Modern (and later the Late-Modern before finally Post-modern which we've been in since like the '50s...)

So the industrial revolution is actually further removed from the Renaissance and Middle Ages than I previously indicated. :::

Now, back to the topic at hand:

Chinese scholars, as you know, invented paper without which the printing press is not possible in the way that we conceive it today.

Okay? Paper had been in widespread use since late antiquity. It's not what ended the Middle Ages; that was the printing press, which, as you know, was invented by Johannes Gutenberg, a German.

India invented the numerical notation system that allows us to communicate large values and datasets in an efficient manner.
[...]
For paper, as with numerical notation, the practice was brought to Europe with advancement by Islamic civilizations.

Nobody here is denying any of that, but it's still not what ended the Middle Ages.

The colonial narrative, for hundreds of years was that this progress happened in isolation and that was used to justify racism and genocide.

The user you originally replied to literally included "inventing racism" in their roast of whiteness, so I'm not sure why you think this is a counterpoint to anything that's been said...

1
shawn1122reply

Eurocentric history has erased major Asian milestones including Tang Dynasty woodblock printing, Bi Sheng's ceramic movable type, and Korean metal movable type. Framing Gutenberg's press as a uniquely European development completely ignores those innovations.

It's a shitpost sub. Agreed. But Eurocentric historical bias / propaganda needs to be called out if we're actually going to have an honest grasp of the world and the many civilizations that have contributed to its progress.

1

You're looking at the conversation with tunnel vision in the context of a shitpost sub, and then lamenting that we haven't had a comprehensive discussion of all the stages of progress that led up to the point of Gutenberg's press?

Don't show up to a baseball field and then lament that nobody's playing soccer...

I don't like onions either. The taste is ok sometimes, but not very nice. And the texture is awful.

18
ExLisperreply
lemmy.curiana.net

Well, it does suck. I remember when I was in high school and I found some cookbook with recipes from different countries. I tried cooking some of them and was amazed at how intense the taste was. Only later I realized that those recipes were pretty normal, they just tasted amazing compared with my mother's cooking. It's not that my mother's cooking was very bland but Polish cuisine is pretty boring. It's mostly salty and sour, not much variation. And some people never venture out beyond what they grew up with.

6

Speaking as someone with texture issues and a very sensitive pallet, it fucking sucks ass. Lived in India for 4 years, couldn't eat fucking anything even though I tried to force myself every day. I wish I could enjoy Asian food the way everyone else does :( At least I had butter chicken 😭

Some people would take a pill for sustenance if they could.

11
Nollijreply
sopuli.xyz

You basically can, albeit not in pill form. There's a whole category of complete meal replacement options, mostly in the form of shakes. The best known is Soylent by Rosa Labs, but there are dozens of others targeting every nutritional profile around. Most are a fraction of the cost of even the most basic foods.

Strangely, most of those people will still not even try these.

8

I remember reading somewhere that you need to use your teeth and chew food for health reasons (tooth decay otherwise?). So it's not a great replacement, even if you hate taste

1
lemmy.zip

I just replace it all with shallots. They're way better, no nasty slimy texture. Fuck cooked onions, nastiest shit ever, texture-wise

2

Yall have some wrong kind of onion. Where I am, raw onion is clean and crunchy like fresh cabbage. Do yall buy onion only after it has been lying around in warm air for a year?

What really has awful texture is boiled cabbage or onion.

1
lemmy.zip

Out of curiosity, is it any onions?

Like there’s white, yellow, and red onions. On top of that, lightly cooked yellow onions are far different from heavily carmalized ones (crunchy and oniony vs soft and sweet)

Incidentally, I also love the texture of tomatoes 🤔 are you my evil twin by any chance?

8
piefed.social

Peak onion-based dish right there. The broth gets all the oniony flavor but then you don't need too many onions in it...

2
lemmy.world

Maybe you and I make it different mine is like 75% onion (the rest is bread and cheese)

1

I prefer for there not to be too much, but soaking the onions does lessen my reaction to the texture of raw onion so either way it's a good soup

2
quokk.au

I am kind of the same way with garlic. I can certainly enjoy foods that have garlic as one of the ingredients, but if it's the main flavor, I tend to not like it. Like, if I'm choosing from the hummus varieties available to me, I have no problem with the plain hummus that obviously has garlic in it, but I don't like the "roasted garlic" variety that has extra garlic.

8

I love garlic in all forms but I have to agree - garlic as a seasoning is very different to garlic as a flavour.

6
lemmus.org

I have a hypothesis but am not smart enough to verify. But I think Onion affects some people like cilantro. Where a portion of people have a reaction to it and others do not. But mostly that they are responding to onion's intended natural defense of vapor and oil.

6

I have an alternative hypothesis: At least some people who say they don't like onion are basing that opinion entirely on raw onion and refuse to consider and/or haven't noticed cooked onion.

Go to restaurant, get served a house salad, bite into the purple thing, OH GOD WHAT IS THAT?

4

Yeah, I can't eat raw onion or celery bc it squeaks when bitten like a live animal or something. I definitely use onion and celery powders when cooking tho 😂

1

Alliums (which includes onions) are not uncommon food allergy so there's something in your theory

2

I didn't like onions in my childhood. I grew fond of them when approaching adulthood, particularly when I moved out and started properly cooking for myself and buying my own fast food. Now a sandwich without onion doesn't taste right.

So I think it's rather a matter of a particular configuration of tastebuds. Just like I grew out of liking overly sweet foods.

My husband doesn't eat onion, pepper, mushroom and any other "weird" vegetable. Try cooking with these restrictions. If I have to use one of these, he'll eat it, but he won't like it, so I feel like it's not fair to serve to him constantly, only once in a while.

4

You could try pawning your husband off on my ex-wife. She has all of the same "restrictions", but also bell peppers and garlic. Oh and no fish of any sort, except for herring, which she'll eat tons of whenever pregnant (which I think would be most of the time if she could)

1

I also dont like union like the caremelized shit it sucks but if its cooked into a dish i can enjoy it maybe sm like this?

4

I kinda hate onion. If I don't taste it it's fine but any dish that I've tried both with and without I heavily prefer without. Fried onions are the exception for me.

11
OwOarchistreply
pawb.social

When you're actually working out a lot, you need carbs ... especially starchy, long-lasting, slow-absorbing carbs like rice.

And not just to have energy to burn during your workout, either. Rebuilding muscle requires protein to supply the building blocks, yes, but it also requires energy to assemble those building blocks together. Carbs are the healthiest, most efficient way to supply that energy.

A diet tuned for a rigorous workout regimen needs both protein and carbs.

Edit: and before anybody takes this the wrong way. No, your 30 minutes per week 'jogging' on a treadmill does not count as a 'rigorous workout regimen', and three donuts washed down by an XL caramel latte is way too much carbs, and not the best kind of carbs. This is only for people working out intensely, as in athletic training. It's also with the assumption that you're mainly working for muscle gain, not weight loss.

I ran my last marathon on keto and it was fantastic. Five stars, would recommend to anyone. There was just no slowing down and I didn't even notice the wall around the 20 mile mark. Where glycogen is finally burned out.

I didn't find it sustainable as a lifestyle though because I eat in other peoples homes a lot. And it's just rude to not eat what they put in front of you. Eating out was just strange as well since I would just eat the protein and leave the sides. Or ask to substitute whatever it was with salad.

3

How is it punching down to make fun of someone for eating bland food?

Many people who eat like this are closed minded to trying foods from other cultures because they use flavors and spices that add richness to the food that they perceive as “unsafe”. This often extrapolates out to a weird form of xenophobia.

It’s not punching down to make fun of xenophobes….
