At least when I was a kid in Seattle we were taught about it in very positive (if somewhat sanitized) terms. I'd expect the Confederate states to be less excited about it.

Grew up in Alabama and was taught about the underground railroad in a positive way.

Despite what you hear, it's not still the 1860s here

12

It's not that long ago that "the War of Northern Aggression" was a thing, and there's plenty of people alive that physically fought against the Civil Rights Movement. We aren't nearly far enough away from slavery for me to give The South the benefit of the doubt.

16

Despite what you hear, in your own specific town, in your own specific school, you are a sample size of one - You can't just blanket claim that the American south has meaningfully progressed on behalf of all the fervent majority trump supporting states.

Also, "taught... In a positive way" is an extremely subjective assessment considering both the content itself and your recalling it from long memory. Many of us also thought we had the real version or the "right" version until we tried to actively learn the objective truth.

Maybe visit soon while you still have a chance.

Only partly joking. Wouldn't surprise me one single bit.

"What are you in for?"

"Human decency and compassion"

"Yeah, that'll do it"

Makes sense why the hospital fired her too. Can't afford do be associated with things like decency and/or compassion

Hope this good hearted lassie gets some local support and legal representation.

145

Ann Arbor is a generally considered a progressive college town. Odds are likely many locals have her back

lemmy.world

Legal support, sure. But in addition to being prosecuted, she was also fired:

Trinity Health fired Freeman and has refused to make any public statement on the events of May 28. [...] This non-profit is the sixth largest U.S. hospital system, with 125,000 employees, and one of several Catholic Church affiliated systems that operate dozens of hospitals across broad swathes of the country.

So this aspect isn’t just legal, or local.

59

Having previously worked for the "Catholic" hospital system Ascension, FUCK Catholic hospital systems. We used to be a local system (several hospitals in one city) that provided top-notch, academic, and ethical care. The nuns would walk around and hold motherfuckers accountable. I watched everything degrade quickly after Ascension took over. The nuns left, and slowly everyone in leadership, who used to be experienced doctors, nurses, and social workers, were replaced by people whose only experience was in business.

25

Nurses can walk into any hospital and get hired on the spot lol. Our medical system is crumbling and nobody wants to work in it anymore so they’re desperate for talent.

We need more people like Chloe Freeman.

Freeman’s employer did not see it this way. When police questioned her (thus collaborating with ICE), she openly said that she disagreed with ICE separating immigrants from their families. Trinity Health fired Freeman and has refused to make any public statement on the events of May 28. It is criminal that this and other hospital systems allow ICE and CBP agents to enter medical buildings.

The problem is that it's actually, literally criminal for them to deny entrance to the pigs.

Ohh! I love it when we LARP that we have some sort of legitimate legal / justice system!

We have an enforcement arm for the parasitic pedophile rapist class.

I'm an anarchist, brainlet, I just think it's embarrassing to try and get mad at the hospital about it.

You're just flat wrong though - the police do not have the right to enter a hospital beyond the public sections (generally, the waiting rooms) without a warrant or permission from the hospital. The hospital in this case gave the police that permission, and unless a statute exists in Michigan specifically allowing this (if one exists I haven't found it), they are absolutely at fault for doing so.

25

Trying to parse that last sentence. Who is at fault for doing what?

0
ani.social

Wrong. That's why the guy got away and she was able to assist him in the first place, specifically because they weren't barging into operation areas.

My goodness, am I really?

ICE agents accompanied him into the hospital but did not thoroughly guard him at all times. [...] Then, Chloe Freeman, a Registered Nurse working her shift, entered the CT room, spoke with O.B.P., and helped him walk through several doors, exit the hospital, and walk out free. He has not been recaptured. ^(emphasis^ ^mine)^

Oh - I'm terribly sorry, but you appear to be mistaken. ICE were allowed into the hospital, and as written did not accompany him into the radiology room (since personnel generally do not stand around CT scanners due to the radiation hazard this makes sense). So the hospital does therefore seem to have been at fault for allowing them to accompany the patient - but thank you for looking out for accuracy in comment sections!

6

I'm confused by the whole "fault" thing. I EMT'd for about a decade, and there were times we had police escorts, and they'd absolutely come all the way in and stay with the patient the whole time. Just my experience, and maybe I'm confused by the point you're making.

That being said, the hospital is private property. The hospital presumably has an understanding, and it may be written and memorialized in some sort of agreement, that cops are welcome on the property, in the same way just about anyplace that exists in society does. Maybe not a private residence, but anywhere public may go.

Pragmatic ones pick their battles instead of chasing martyrdom at the first opportunity.

-5
ani.social

Yep, and it's not even about picking battles or rEjEcTiNg aUtHoRiTy it's about not expecting a fucking hospital to lead the initial charge of the revolution.

Lemmy loves to shitpost about anarchism but I don't hear about any CEOs getting fragged on a weekly basis yet these lazy fucks think a corporate hospital admin team is supposed to hold the door.

-5

The vast majority of hospitals in the US do not allow police entry without a warrant, safety concern or an emergent situation (or a procedural reason - victim interviews and similar are sometimes done in hospital, as well as supervision of physical evidence collection (or the actual collection itself if the hospital doesn't have a certified forensic examiner (or legal/jurisdictional equivalent) on staff)), why are you just making stuff up you clearly don't know about dude?

kreskinreply
lemmy.world

disagree, its actually literally not criminal. They dont get to just barge onto private property and do whatever they want. They need a warrant. And no one is required to help them in any way. Their mission is their problem, not anyone elses in a private healthcare setting. They can wait in the waiting room with their thumbs up their asses like everyone else.

This is a catholic hospital. Shame on the catholic church for collaborating with fascism. again.

22

Catholic hospitals have pretty much nothing to do with the church today. They are exclusively businesses, and they pay less taxes because they operate as religious nonprofits.

5

Yeah, I just hope she's not harshly punished for it.

She probably will be. They want people to be too afraid to help each other.

Questioned by the police? It's time to shut the fuck up

Good on her though

I don't know. I heard of several nurses who didn't believe in masks or vaccines in and around 2020. Demoralizing, for sure.

Nurses can be absolutely bonkers. I say this after knowing many and teaching many in my paint and sip classes. Nurses have always been the absolutely craziest people I’ve experienced.

My wife is in healthcare. Met many nurses. In my experience the most batshit crazy people in healthcare are psych workers, nurses and certain types of specialists eg ENT or orthopaedic.

Edit: batshit crazy in a good way, generally.

4

I was going to say that psych staff at a decent psych hospital are probably some of the best people you'll ever meet in healthcare

3

And the more specialized their nursing expertise, the crazier. Wound nurses are insane.

And God forbid you come across one that's also a horse girl.

3

Absolutely untrue. There are many horrid people in the service that should never have been allowed to be a nurse. Same with the military.

5

Oh god no. I know many amazing nurses, but there are just as many fucking terrible nurses. The older nurses I've worked with are significantly more likely to not give a fuck about their patients or colleagues, and also be extremely judgemental. This is a generalization, but based on my experience.

That's courage, the magas and ice are cowards. Weak people who hide behind masks and cause suffering in the world. Courage wins over the cowards.

15

On September 29, federal prosecutor Jerome Morgan, assisted by FBI agent Jennifer Runyan, publicly charged a Michigan nurse with assisting the escape of a man held by ICE from a hospital.

That sure is a guy with a name and probably address.

10

This is what you like to see, not those who he let that man shot in the neck be released into ICE

6

I read the name as Chlora Foreman and thought, ‘what an unfortunate name for a nurse.’

It's not worth it to catch a charge over "fighting" the government. Gen z and millennials really are hell bent on ruining their lives over activism.

You have as many upvotes here as people on lemmy have charges for fighting the government.
