I haven't actually seen Tron: Legacy, but I assume the film cannot possibly be as good as the Daft Punk album it came with.

111
sh.itjust.works

It's not. It's a subpar plot and some questionable acting carried by gorgeous visuals and a stellar soundtrack.

It's still my favourite movie of all time, but the soundtrack is stil better.

Honestly, Tron: Legacy is not that bad compared to Tron: Ares, which I was going to write down before I saw your comment.

24
missingnoreply
fedia.io

I haven't seen that one either, but I'll assume it's worse purely on the basis of not having Daft Punk.

12

it does have Nine Inch Nails though and Trent has done some phenomenal soundtrack work (though obviously not comparable to daft punk)

3
sopuli.xyz

Tron: Ares was not that bad either. The visuals were a clear upgrade from Tron: Legacy and a handful of clips I've seen from the original Tron movie. You can notice that that they put a lot of details in places like Ares' HUD, consoles, the proprietary 3D printer and the virtual red-coloured world whose name I can't remember right now.

The soundtrack does complement the movie, although I noticed that they repeated certain "melodies" across the movie more than I would've liked. It's obviously not at par with Daft Punk but it resembles the spirit of the Tron franchise.

The plot is a real rollercoaster in terms of quality and believability. The backstory and plot of the main protagonists feel solid and so is the interaction between each other. Somehow Jared Leto decently fits the role of Ares and his dialogues don't feel out of place or cringey. On the other hand, the story gives too much power to the antagonist to the point that it clearly feels unfair. Also some action scenes feel like they're happening just because they have to, and probably give material for the trailers to give the viewers something to look forward to while watching the movie.

If you have no qualms with the involvement of Jared Leto, I would recommend that you give this movie a try. It's certainly not a masterpiece, but it's surprisingly well made for a movie that that considered a flop by the users at Lemmy.

Those "repeated certain melodies across the movie" have a name. It's called a theme and is something that's pretty common in movies, opera, musicals, symphonies, etc. An entire work can have a theme that is modified, built upon, expanded or changed as the narrative progresses. Individual characters or places can have their own unique themes. Daft Punk's entire style is built on repetition, so it should be no surprise that their musical score work would highlight that.

Is that the current state of film sequels? The sequel from ten to twenty years ago that we all thought was bad is not nearly as bad as the latest sequel, what has happened to films?!

4

Thanks for the notice :) Yeah thats also a nice music video!

Im kind of a big daft punk fan :)

The Phatom Menace hits sooo much differently if you've read the books to fill in a lot of gaps that the movie itself doesn't take time to explain. I would say AotC and RotS don't suffer from this as much, but The Phantom Menace does stand out in this regard.

Spawn. The movie was laughably bad and I have banned it from my memory. However, the soundtrack is a collection of collaboration between metal bands and electronic artists and is really awesome.

Another good 90s movie soundtrack is the one for Judgment Night. Same concept as the Spawn soundtrack, but with callaborations between hiphop and metal. I have not seen the movie though.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AA8eEULzcY&list=PLN3IXyARrKqPDmud2Cc2AXOwh_4DLT-nW

Note that this is not some sort of official soundtrack; rather, it's apparently just a playlist of songs that appeared in the movie, uploaded by different users, which might mean that volume and encodings or maybe that versions are not consistent with those in the movie. I don't see an official soundtrack on YouTube Music; one might never have been released.

3

Considering the other super hero movies we had at the time I thought it was ok. The HBO animated series is much better.

2

That's more screen time than what they got in Interstella 5555, an actual album music movie

1

I was debating putting this. I see it's a popular comment. I don't think it's a bad movie, as I greatly enjoy it. The soundtrack is definitely what makes it excellent though and the album is worth a playthrough every once in a while

2
infosec.pub

Queen of the Damned was an abysmal movie with a surpassing solid soundtrack with some of the biggest names in music at the time collaborating.

Jonathan Davis of Korn wrote half the songs and sang in the movie, but his record contract stated that he couldn't appear on an album put out by another label, so the solution was to bring in guest artists to sing instead. Chester Bennington from Linkin Park, Wayne Static from Static-X, David Draiman from Disturbed, and Jay Gordon from Orgy. If you were a nuMetal fan back then, this was an all-star lineup.

Also, honorable mention to Batman & Robin for being absolute dogshit but having one of the Smashing Pumpkins' best songs on it.

28

No. I enjoyed it immensely. That’s just how good the soundtrack is; to be even better than that.

13

It's not a terrible movie. I think the main complaint about it is the use of the manic pixie girl trope.

Sometimes I am objectively wrong in things I've enjoyed. For example, the original Hitman video game adaptation movie from 2007. I enjoyed it when it came out despite it having an abysmal score on Rotten Tomatoes (currently sitting at 16%). I watched it several times and really enjoyed it. I recently rewatched it, maybe two years ago and... what was that guy (old me) thinking?

5

Came here to say this as well. Movie is kinda meh but the soundtrack is so solid I even like the Coldplay song on there! (and imo Coldplay is WACK)

3
piefed.social

I am super proud to be late to the party and still have one useful submission: Flash Gordon, the 1980 hot mess that George Lucas passed on to make Star Wars.

The soundtrack is not the finest work by Queen, but is worth a tenth re-listen nonetheless.

21

A Kind of Magic! I mean it's not really the soundtrack to Highlander, but it kinda is and it rocks

4
lemmy.world

Have to disagree. The movie is awesome, lots of lines to quote, lots of visual gags. It (and the comic) were formative for me and it's one of the few movies that I feel really understands the millennial gamer nerd culture. And of course the music is great, but I couldn't agree with better.

16
0opsreply
piefed.zip

It's one of my favorite movies, but one thing I've noticed about it is that you can really gauge people's interests by what they remember from the movie. I notice that a lot of people on the internet remember it for the video game references or the comic book editing and action, but to me it's always been a music movie.

3

Yeah, indie music, gamers, goths, vegans, movies, martial arts, queer subcultures... There's a lot of things to latch on to and think "this movie was made for me"

3

I'll concede that labeling it as "not bad" was too harsh/critical.

When the movie was released, the movie, the plot, the soundtrack, the special effects - were fantastic.

You're absolutely right, it did a fantastic job of capturing "nerd culture" for that time.

It's not that I feel the movie aged badly, but it's not as "unique" or relevant as it was in 2010. Other films have picked apart pieces of what made SPvW such a unique experience (for example: Free Guy).

Additionally, the current "nerd culture" has changed. You'll be hard pressed to find younger gamers play pixel graphic games (although, they are missing out).

Certainly, not all topics are outdated (ie: LGBTQ), but enough of is.

The film is a perfect nerdy time capsule for 2010, but the soundtrack with that dirty grunge sound will be around for a lot longer.

We are sex bob-omb. 1...2...3...4....

2

If you look into the details of the special (not visual!) effects the movie is even more awesome!

3

Yes, precisely. If you asked me in the 90s what I would think about present day Trent Resnor I would have probably called him a sellout but now I'm honestly just loving all the sweet jams he and Atticus Ross are putting out both as NIN and in their various movie soundtracks and scores.

4

Pirates of the Caribbean. The plot, characters, actors, and effects are fine enough. Specifically the plot is bland; it's deliberately a hodgepodge of everything piratey tossed into a blender. Johnny Depp's performance is excellent, but more because it feels the script was shaped around his eccentric dude persona rather than them stretching their skills. None of this makes the film bad just mediocre.

… but the score is a masterpiece. Instantly iconic, filled with layered motifs, carries the sense of adventure and perfectly shapes the mood of each scene. Both catchy enough to become an earworm, but orchestral and textured enough that it's not unwelcome as one.

1492: Conquest of Paradise. Very few people remember the movie (I still do and rewatch it regularly), but the soundtrack by Vangelis is an absolute banger.

In general, his soundtracks tend to be better than the movies. Alexander is another great example. Chariots of Fire and Bounty are fine movies, but still greatly enhanced by his soundtracks. Perhaps the only movie that stood on its own against a soundtrack by Vangelis was Blade Runner.

Most star wars tbh. It seems like no franchise catches more criticism than star wars, about plot, dialogue, acting, etc. But I've never heard a complaint about the soundtrack (for the main saga anyway). John Williams just doesn't miss.

7

Yes, Williams is the guy that brought leitmotifs to movies (or at least the one everyone's heard of).

There was a YouTube criticism of Marvel Super Hero movies that was basically going around asking people to hum themes from favorite movies, almost always John Williams: Star Wars, Jurassaic Park, Indiana Jones... then he´d ask people to sing people from a Marvel movie, ANY Marvel movie, and people who just mumble incoherently that they couldn't think of anything. All those characters, all those movies, and not a single damn theme identifiable with any of character or movie, just a bunch of music generically recycled for Action or Sad or Bemused. Biggest missed opportunity in music history.

There's also some good commentary about how themes that had definite meanings in the original trilogy got recycled and reused until they meant nothing specific. I think Luke's theme in the swamp became Generic Music for Using the Force.

8
piefed.social

To copy felsiq's comment, Sinners. The movie is phenomenal but the soundtrack? Holy moly.

8

Hmm. Idk about that one. For one thing, its a movie about music, or at least with music front and center so I think its hard to separate the two. But I thought the cinematography was beautiful and the action scenes were badass as well. And the story was great.

15

Fair enough, the visuals are also really top tier. IMO the most stunning parts are just where they filmed it (New Zealand?) tho, so I don’t see them as being quite as specific to these movies as the music is

2
sh.itjust.works

Yeah, New Zealand really is a magical place. Pretty cool they had all those old civilizations to film in. They must have done a lot of work getting Minas Tirith camera-ready after all those years. And it was especially cool of them to hire an indigenous Balrog instead of just setting a European actor on fire the way most movies do.

5
felsiqreply
piefed.zip

Lmao, that’s why I said the most stunning parts imo. The bits of the movies that make me stop and say “wow” are mostly just the mountain shots as the fellowship hikes and the green hills around the shire. Nothing against the rest of the visuals (like you mentioned, the cities were done really well), I’m just much more interested by nature personally

2

For me, the nature moments don't have too many musical tie ins with the exceptions of the herogasm helicopter shot for the full fellowship theme shortly after leaving Rivendell.

When I listen to the soundtrack I see Minas Morgul, and Weathertop, and Khazad-Dhum, the Argonath, the caverns below Khazad-Dhum....

Hence the existence of the word "synergy". LOTR is one of my all time favourite films exactly because the music matches the environment so well.

Edge of tomorrow has been on my to do list because that director is pretty good. So I'm thinking I will enjoy it once I actually get to it.

Eyes Wide Shut I think I've absorbed too much of it through cultural osmosis to appreciate the shock it seems made to illicit. You're right, though I might have liked it if I saw it in the 90's.

Pacific Rim theme song lives rent free in my head. An amazing movie. Also came out around the time I started paying attention to directors so it's my "first" Del Toro movie and I have watched everything he's made since.

I don't remember any of the music from Arrival so I guess it's time for a rewatch.

3

Fun fact! Arrival used On the Nature of Daylight by Max Richter to such powerful effect that it cost them a shot at the Oscar for Best Original Score. The Academy determined that this non-original-to-the-film piece of music had too much of an emotional impact and would cloud judgement of the actual original score, so the film wasn’t nominated in the category.

(That song is so beautiful. It gets used all the time in media because it so perfectly encompasses the feeling of hope in the face of despair. It was one of the first songs I listened to after the 2024 US election to try to make myself less catatonic.)

Frozen.

"Let It Go" is a banger and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise.

6
lemmy.world

Does anyone say otherwise? I feel like everyone agrees its a banger. There's a few other good tracks as well.

The funny thing is, the song kind of ruined the movie. Hear me out.

Originally the movie was based off of The Ice Queen, the old children's story. And the first act of the movie kind of stays true to that - Elsa runs away and she's going to be the villain of the story (and hot take but i think the first act of Frozen might be the strongest of any Disney movie, its up there at least imo).

But Let It Go was so compelling and sympathetic that it wins you over, which is a problem because now the audiance is pulling for the (soon to be) villain. So they basically had to rewrite the rest of the movie with a kind of weird fakeout villain, and Elsas arc is actually sort of backpeadaling away from the message of Let It Go, which is about never going back and leaving everything behind. As a result the movie is pretty messy in my opinion, although still fun for the animation and music.

3

Does anyone say otherwise?

I honestly haven't looked but I feel like I've a few downvotes on this one.

Fascinating learning on The Ice Queen and follow on and I fully agree on the disrobing of the villain with that moment.

For what it's worth, I know all the words to Let It Go and there is zero shame for me on that front. It has been banged out in our car well over a hundred times.

3

Put in my vote for _Flash Gordon _. Now, look, I love the movie, but the Queen album that goes with it is incredible.

Was Last Action Hero good? I never saw it, but the soundtrack is loaded with 90s music.

6

Last Action Hero is alright. It's an on-the-nose send-up of the action genre. AC-DC wrote a song for it, Big Guns.

It's a very...literal send-up of the action movie genre. if you're not familiar with it, a young boy ends up magically teleported into an action movie he's watching, and spends half of the run time of both films trying to convince the over the top action hero that it's a movie.

It's fun for what it is; I personally think True Lies does the "lol action movies, amirite?" thing better.

5

I enjoy Last Action Hero. I probably won't go so far as to call it "good", but it's fun, especially if you grew up watching 80s action movies.

I think part of the issue is that fewer movies and tv shows use licensed music anymore so most music in movies its just the score now. I blame it on streaming as it eats into profits, as can be seen by things like scrubs reruns not using the original music from the episodes.

Now that you mention it, that is part of why I found Deadpool and Wolverine to be so enjoyable. I know that other MCU movies also license music for their bigger productions, but Deadpool and Wolverine was over-the-top about it.

Mortal Kombat...I was in the target demographic for it when it came out, it was one of the few video game movies that seemed to resemble its source material at the time, that high energy techno theme song is iconic, and I associate it with "let's have some fun" nights. Those glorious evenings of renting a movie from Blockbuster, ordering a pizza, maybe inviting a friend over. It's not a fantastic film, but a generation of us associate that film with those simple, fun childhood memories, which you will NOT re-live watching it again.

3

Forrest Gump. The movie is exceptional. The soundtrack tho...

4
lemmy.world

This is not such an interesting question anymore because it's a trope to blow the budget on recognizable songs in a shit movie.

But if your looking for the biggest difference in quality, I'd say Singles (1992) Not that the movie is bad, just that the soundtrack is legendary.

EDIT: also because the best tracks are original recordings and not just a playlist of already popular songs.

4

Outside of the 1990's, I don't think there was an era when the movie industry relied that much on soundtrack albums as part of the revenue stream.

4

A great movie with an even greater soundtrack:

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. All of the TOS movies have great soundtracks, but The Voyage Home's score stands out among them. Just that title track, that plays over a flat shot of the fore credits over a starry sky, is this high energy, multi-movement overture that's more exciting than all Star Trek media made after 2008. We used to have potential as a species.

A shit movie with a legitimately good soundtrack:

Flashdance, of 1983. To quote Todd In The Shadows, "What most people remember about that movie is water, then Maniac right after that, and then about six hours of boring, and then What A Feeling."

Loved it for the memes, but now I'm coming back for the tunes.

Later: Wait. I already have every Offspring album. ;-)

Cutthroat Island (1995). The movie bombed the box-office so bad that the entire swashbuckling genre died out for several years, until the first Pirates of the Caribbean film in 2003.

The soundtrack, however, is one of the best of the genre

4

I saw this rather long retrospective on Pirates of the Caribbean that mentioned Cutthroat Island as the last big pirate movie attempted. The funny thing is, the narrator was talking over footage from the movie, which looked fine. The montage of scenes he put together looked well shot, high production value...yeah the movie's terrible.

2

Arcane, although the songs are placed perfectly with each scene so maybe not better but I still listen to it all the time

4

That King Arthur movie Guy Richie made is pretty bad, but the soundtrack is killer.

3

Man of Steel. Hans Zimmer goes hard. Zach Snyder goes hard for space dildo man capsules.

3

Here are my 2 cents:

  • Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain
  • Avatar

Not that those films are bad, but their OSTs are just great.

Annihilation.

It's all ambient, but gives one heck of an ambiance. Especially near the end.

3

I can only think of the following:

XXX: State of the Union, Stealth, Blade and Blade 2... and the first six Fast and the Furious movies.

The Conan soundtrack really is amazing.

(I haven't yet seen or don't remember the music from most of the other ones, so no comment)

2

Peaky Blinders, for sure. That soundtrack, wow.

I love Monsoon Wedding, but the music is better than the movie in that one too.

ETA: My husband adds Saturday Night Fever.

And another edit, one of my kids would like to add Sucker Punch to this list.

3

The Anna Taylor Joy Emma I though was great, and the soundtrack is amazing, but my wife only likes the soundtrack and not the movie.

2

Bugsy Malone

Movie is quite good but I think the music/singing is a bit better than the acting...

2

The Wing Commander movie by Chris Roberts (yeah, of Star Citizen scam artist fame).

It's loosely based on his older Wing Commander games, and I think he funded it with some of the money Microsoft gave him to develop Freelancer.

It's a deeply mediocre movie, but the soundtrack, in particular the main theme, was pretty darn good.

2

I know I'm putting forward a series but Blood of Zeus has one of the best soundtrack work I've heard. It feels epic, thematic and is actually tailored to each scene and the characters in it.

It's like Peter and the Wolf on steroids turned into a proper composed orchestra set in Greek mythology on every episode. Writing and voice acting is good enough but the show becomes one of my favorites because of the music.

Yes! I can't find that Thompson Twins mix on streaming any more. I may have to actually self-host just to play my own rip of it.

I dubbed it into a blank and then cut it into a loop so it'd repeat forever, and used that as tunes when I needed to walk somewhere really far. It's etched into my brain.

3

Im not sure but I have seen all sorts of alright or crap movies broadcast and then the credits play and its like. wow this movie had this song!

piefed.zip

I just checked my OST playlist and the “worst” movies I could find are:

  • Eye in th Sky
  • Hold the Dark
  • A Ghost Story
2

Dinosaur composed by James Newton Howard. Lovely opening melodie by flute and great epic action music.

2

My parents bought this on CD in the 90s, and I loved listening to it. Watched the movie recently, and was very disappointed.

lemmy.world

O this is an easy one. Bloodsport.

The OST was composed by Paul Hertzog and in my opinion is one of the best soundtracks ever made. It's what made the movie good in the first place.
