I’m not dying for rich people that got power and decided to break literally every stabilizing thing in geopolitics so that they could make more money and then start a war to cover it up.

I might die because of them, but there’s no way I’m dying for them. If they draft, I’m running. call me whatever you want.

In totalitarian regimes—communism, fascism, religious fundamentalism—popular support is a given. You can start wars, you can prolong them, you can put anyone in uniform for any length of time without ever having to worry about the slightest political backlash. In a democracy, the polar opposite is true. Public support must be husbanded as a finite national resource. It must be spent wisely, sparingly, and with the greatest return on your investment. America is especially sensitive to war weariness, and nothing brings on a backlash like the perception of defeat. I say “perception” because America is a very all-or-nothing society. We like the big win, the touchdown, the knockout in the first round. We like to know, and for everyone else to know, that our victory wasn’t only uncontested, it was positively devastating. -Max Brooks, World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War

communism, fascism, religious fundamentalism

democracy

Point of order, democracy is a mechanism for selecting leadership, not an ideology of governance.

Democracies routinely produce Communist, Fascist, and Religious Fundamentalist leaders.

Like, I know it's a quote and all. But it's just a Baby's First PolySci view of how civilizations organize themselves. Not an ounce of Lockean Theory to be found.

That's before you get into the reality of Republican governance and practical enfranchisement. You can't go rolling up on Thomas Jefferson's slaves and announcing "Idiots, it's a democracy, why did you vote for this?"

democracy is a mechanism for selecting leadership

No, it's not. Or well, it's more than that -- especially ideologically. Quod omnes tangit, ab omnibus approbari debet -- "what concerns everyone must be approved by everyone".

2

what concerns everyone must be approved by everyone

Democracies don't function this way. Majoritarian rule regionally occurs in defiance of some portion of the public citizenry.

Depending on how the Democracy is organized bureaucratically, it may even be the majority of the citizenry.

Klinger's problem was slow reaction. Had he acted before they initially saw him, maybe. My dad was drafted in Vietnam and always told me to go right up and deep kiss the guy taking names. Although I don't think that would work as well now.

29

It would work, but only to keep you from getting drafted. You'd probably be in some sort of military brig for a good long while.

Much more effective* is to shoot the bastards. We all know how much americans talk about doing it...

*I'm not going to lie here, it's not more effective for you, just for everyone else after a few more follow your example. You'd be consigning yourself to death.

2

Don't worry, it's only a matter of time before they toss you in jail for attempting to draft dodge and forcibly detransition you, thus making you eligible.

24

"I became a terrorist and murdered an innocent person because I didn't agree with someone else's decision."

The draft will never occur in the U.S. because we already have way to many people in the military. They don't need to have a draft.

Now if we made education and healthcare accessible to everyone like we should, we might not have as many people volunteering to go.

Our military would grow to like 10x the current size if we had forced conscription like Israel or Korea.

We couldn't afford it.

-29
feddit.uk

By definition there’s no such thing as an innocent military member.

11
lemmy.world

So let me ask, do you think it would be proper to report this as a terrorist site. Choosing to murder a random person who has no choice to the military?

-17

Hul didn't you said theirs was no draft ? Try to keep ypur story straight little propagandist.

"immoral conscription" was the comment I replied to? Do you not know what those words mean? That's called a draft in the country we are talking about.

The number of "frags" near "U.S. commanders" is near 0. People like Pete Hegseth are stupid, but even they aren't stupid enough to choose to go into an active warzone

-3
Triashareply
lemmy.world

We have an effective volunteer military, for now.

When civil unrest reaches critical mass the elites stop thinking about the military as a tool to force other countries to do what they want and start thinking about it as a tool to force the rabble to stay in line. This is the primary purpose of most militaries in the world.

The failure of the war in Iran brings us closer to that point.

4
lemmy.world

Remember when everyone said Trump couldn't win the election*? And since when has not having the money for war stopped the US from going to war? They just borrow against their kids.

Although I will point out that Trump and Elon bragged about rigging the election, that's besides the point.

3
lemmy.world

If you think "it can't happen here", with regards to a draft, you're an idiot who has their head in the sand. Too many "it can't happen here" things have been happening.

7

It would bankrupt the country to add people we don't need... It would be like a sports team paying to have 10x the players and not be able to put any of them on the field.

Creating a draft would drive voters to increase the pay and benefits of soldiers as well.

So yes it could happen. But it is a near 0% chance of happening.

-3

Might wanna look up the origin of fragging, why it was A Thing and how the circumstances not only destroyed the draft, but the US presence in vietnam

Of course never would i EVER frag a commandant of the New Reich in his own tent with his own ordinance, trust me bro! Why would I, a humble conscript, ever lash out at the fascist regime that's rounding up so many of my loved ones for summary extermination? Golly that would be awfully mean of me, just too cruel of me by far, to return even the tiniest, barest fraction of the gut wrenching agonizing tragedy they inflicted on us all BACK to them. Goodness forbid.

Their kids have probably disowned them and cut contract, so they might be happy they are off to war to become "war fighters" and get testosterone shots

This is not a draft. Which is like 18-26ish typically.

BUT, that doesn’t mean the draft is fixed at those ages. BUT, I doubt they would ever need to draft up to 42 based on the US population and the willingness of psychos to want to a) kill people or b) get paid to kill people via promises of a better life later as a veteran (Baby killer)

Who knew Fallout would be right about the annexation but wrong about which way it went?

Haha annex. Love it.

There’s a good line from the TV show, I don’t think it was used in the games. It’s in reference to a character that has to travel from Canada to the USA, and someone tells them:

Most of war is getting things fixed or moving to the front line fighting. For every battalion fighting there is another fixing cars, doing laundry, cooking, or getting the paperwork in order for all of those. Doctors are just as important to an army as soldiers. None of those jobs is too much for a 35 year old getting 4 years of service in.

Ageist nonsense.

9

Except they just changed the enlistment (and by proxy draft) age to 42.

3

Nah we need the military as an option for poor 18yos with no job or education prospects after highschool. Which, despite the declining birthright, is still somehow a growing demographic.

5

Yeah, it should be, but 18-24 y/o's are much easier to indoctrinate and radicalize, as well as far more reckless in their tolerance for risky activities.

3

People don’t want to fight pedos war in Petey’s army so they expanded to recruit pool.

Training will have to be different. I am already to fed up with crap to have a drill instructor yell at me. They can give instructions and support, but I’m not getting “instilled” with anything. Or maybe not. We see MAGA incel man cult guys paying thousands to get tormented at knock off BUDs training camps.

18

I can't wait for the lawsuits around legally compelled detransititions for military draft or any government positions.

9

Low T won't save you as Hegseth wants to inject soldiers with T. Being trans also won't save you as they will happily change their tune on the trans military ban during a draft as an excuse to throw trans women into the meat grinder.

6

They won't refuse trans soldiers. They will just ban any action or expression which conforms to a gender identity not consistent with sex at birth, and selectively hand out corporal punishment for perceived infractions.
