Conservatives are organizing a national anti-AI protest on July 18th
The political right hates AI a little less than the left, but not by super much, and some forces from the emerging America First movement are getting ready to protest AI's invasiveness and capacity for manipulation. The org is called Humans First, and they're trying to have a 50501-style nationwide protest about it on July 18th. If both sides cooperate on this one, good things can actually happen, so this should get talked about. A lot. https://www.humansfirst.com/

Man, even when they're doing something good, they still have to frame it as "I come first!"
Conservatives categorically lack the brain capacity to consider others, never mind put them first.
Seems more like a lack of empathy than brain capacity. Moral and intellectual defects are not the same.
Actually there's a fair amount of emerging neuroscience that shows that the brains of people with conservatives worldviews have lowered activity in the regions that process empathy, lowered activity in the regions that engage and resolve conflicts , and biased towards feeling threatened in a safe situation.
they have a higher fear center.
Of course moral reasoning shows up in a brain scan if materialism is true. The important point was about something a person is responsible for versus not.
thier protests will likely fail, because its more about themselves than the greater good of a group.
We do though. The entire lexicon of racism is ripe to be repurposed for shit-talking AI, because clankers literally aren't people and they actually do make society worse. For the first time in human history, there is something out there that it is morally correct to be bigoted at. I think the slogan also carries the subtle implication that the people behind AI aren't totally human too, which is great. Fuck clankers.
Sure, but "clankers" aren't a thing. AI isn't sentient, the humans creating and pushing AI are. They're our real enemies. Being angry at "clankers" is like seeing a guy coming at you with a knife and punching the knife.
I thought "clankers" were the people using the slop machines.
"Sloppers" is also a good word for them.
Ah, in that case we're on the same page. I thought "clankers" was a term people were using to "put down" AI clients themselves, as if they had the ability to feel bad. Still, though, it means that the "humans first" idea breaks down, because it's still just humans vs other humans.
I think you were right about clankers referring to the AI. It’s clear in the root comment that’s what they mean when they say “they literally aren’t people”. Also, it is common slang for robots in various media including, I think, Star Wars.
Isn't it also slang for people who fuck robots?
I guess it might be used both ways? Which is silly, the chatbots aren't going to get their feelings hurt by name calling.
Yeah, that's why I always thought it was a strange term. I like the term "sloppers" to refer to the people using AI, though. Makes more sense to me.
So it's settled, Sloppers on one side, Neo-Luddites on the other.
I personally believe that sometimes to get a message across you have to leave morality behind to appeal to the base who is recieving the message.
I know its bad if I call elon musk a "retard", or if I embrace racisim when I use words like clanker.
But one of the biggest lessons I think we all missed is that during the alt right pipeline around like 2012 was created by embracing the energy of edgy kids. Those kids are adults now and the ones who still are living in gamer gate culture war bs. Those are the people who get pysoped into believing in whatever trump says because they're just tapping into emotions they got trained to get rage baited by when they where 15, and learned all the shitty talking points that they Still repeat 20 years later.
I'm going to say its bad praxis to try to educate someone when instead we should be taking the low hanging fruit and just dunking on them as if we are going back to the age when we called things "gay." We have for force a cultural normity of bullying people for trying to say dumb racist things, as apposed to this momish/teacher lecture that we can't help ourselves from doing. I'm doing it right now.
Embracing terms like clanker and just straight up bullying ai defenders is good praxis IMO.
...And yes I understand local Ai is different and kind of cool, but you have to understand you are like 1% of the people who even use Ai. When the world as a whole says "Ai" they are thinking of the corperate giants who run LLMs like claude or chatgpt. If the term Ai has to get hijacked and turned into this vauge watered down word that refers to LLMs, then Ai as a whole has to get smeared and you have to accept the fact we are rarely ever talking about you. Running a local Ai model is probably infinitely less problematic, and if there was some socialist automation revolution it would come from someone like you using local Ai models.
Sure. Does the use of a word cause harm? Okay, bad word to use.
Does the use of a word alleviate harm? Great word.
its thier " the only moral abortion is my abortion" type of behaviour
How amazing would it be if our hatred for AI slop is what finally unites the working class against the billionaires?
In a sense, it will
There was a guy who started talking about how they used AI in their ads and noticed way less conversion rate. They decided, fuck it, like write on cardboard and do something real and human. Waaaay better results.
I think the big wigs are going to realize they're getting ripped off by AI, told it's the future and that they need to invest and adopt before anyone else, and they're now realizing they're spending millions to save thousands.
Considering it's the festering carcass of capitalism manifest, every capital generating human stands to fucking hate it.
This is what always gets me.
US dems will throw their leaders under the bus in a split second, or fry them over the slightest past scandal.
Even those that won't will criticize them over specific issues.
Most Republicans, no matter what, cannot blame Trump.
He is objectively, full-throated pro Big Tech; he invited them all to Washington. He is talking about a national OpenAI stake, he is talking up data centres, he literally brought Elon Musk into his cabinet. He's publicly received hundreds in millions of dollars in donations from Tech CEOs! Repeatedly.
Yet even this movement simply cannot bring themselves to say "maybe he's wrong on this one?"
One of the big common themes of conservatism is following the leader. They all want to bend the knee. They love hierarchy.
Well, the flip-side is there doesn't seem to be nuance or waffling, either.
To Republicans, he's either with them, or not; regular folks who break with Trump over an issue seem to renounce him entirely, from what I've seen.
...Hence I'm positing this could be a breaking point.
I think some Trump supports who join this movement, and start watching his actions closely, are going to hit it. Some already did over Epstein, but this is an issue with broader direct impact in peoples' lives.
Because once that last straw hits, they stop willfully ignoring everything else and the cognitive dissonance collapses.
Musk was never in his cabinet, that requires Senate confirmation.
Turns out you don't need to be in the cabinet to completely fuck the country up
First of all, LOL
Secondly, the calls are coming from inside the party, dipshits.
Donald J Trump, convicted rapist
Didn't he even recently say that he loves inflation? Lol
That doesn't sound anti-AI to me.
The cool new shill tactic is to pretend to be anti-AI or "concerned about AI" so they can hijack the conversation and re-direct people's focus away from actual change and regulation. They bring up do-nothing solutions like "Local LLMs" or a there being a "public stake" in the industry.
Lemmy is absolutely thick with these cockroaches.
Wonder if they consider libs are everyday people 🤔
They absolutely don't. See also all the outrage about "taxpayer money" funding abortion and transition as part of Medicare/Medicaid -- they don't even consider that women and trans people are also taxpayers.
Honestly. It reads like they want the government, specifically their dear leader, to do a hostile takeover of the AI companies so they can control it.
It's your bog standard reactionary populism
Is it that abundance thing? If so, that is people betting that llms will be the next oil and they want stock.
That's a sane route. "AI" isn't inherently bad, if it's truly free and open source, with free and open source data and models and algorithms.
Yeah we have those already. The problem is capitalism.
The sane route is to implement socialism. Your AI girlfriend is secondary potatoes.
"IT'S AFFECTING ME NOW!!!!"
Think they'll beat the living fuck out of some cops and attempt to murder some politicians? Seems to be the standard for their "protests".
Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Anti AI, anti cops, and anti politicians is a threefer.
Me, with my broken digital clock: 🤔
It's 88:88 somewhere.
The enemy of my enemy...
Can then fight my enemy, but that doesn't make us friends
Fuckin hope so tbh, it'd be amazing to see it happen for a good cause for once
Fake ass protest. Conservatives love AI.

It's fake concern all right. In Florida, DeSantis is term-limited out after this next election (YAY!), and Trump's hand picked candidate is Byron Donaldson.
This week he started running anl campaign ad in which he shows concern for data centers, and has some utility rate protection he's pushing. It makes him sound a bit anti-data center, so I looked it up.
Turns out he LOVES data centers, he's just doing this one little thing so he can sound like he's pushing back against them, and ease the biggest worry of MAGAs - higher utility bills. They don't care if it destroys the environment, they just don't want to pay more for it.
I think Conservative$ love it. But the "conservative base" doesn't.
Yea the usual suspects are running something called plzdontkillus out of Berkeley this month which is an “anti AI” hype house. They are trying to hijack the message.
Or will only have issues with the datacenters and electric bills, but still want their free slop machine from those corporations.
Apparently DOGE was just a hallucination.
Yeah they are called liberal zionist
what? it’s coming from your own people
yeah the GOP will produce an edict about how AI is good and they'll probably fall in line.
Well, except the ones paying more for everything - hey wait a minute, that's what we get with everything GOP what the fuck
Makes sense. Both the Harkonnens and the Atreides were anti ai.
Like other commenters are saying: it’ll be sweet if anti ai sentiment unites people but the entirety of human history suggests people will cooperate until the threat is over and then they’ll break upon lines of who wipes standing or sitting or some other dumb shit.
The only people who wipe standing are extreme fatasses who can't get to it otherwise.
Wow. You didn't even wait for the threat to be over before proving @[email protected] right! You're a winner!
I do a weird half squat thing, mostly because I've accidentally touched the water too many times.
The problem with standing is the cheeks close together, and shit gets everywhere.
I'm glad my mom taught me to do it the right way.
What do we want? No assholes! When do we want them? We don't!
Wow!! Who invited big AI to DC??
::: spoiler Tap for spoiler :::
It’s a big club and you ain’t in it
Is that the Epstein Island Sports team? Smells bad man
Woke AI companies are making all conservative men super gay.
AI keeps being woke, which is a problem
There was a lot of conservative outrage over early image generation models because the system prompts told them to be racially inclusive, so they wound up generating black people when told to generate something like "medieval European king and queen". If only people had realized then that these machines aren't actually sentient and are just doing what they're prompted to...
A backwards clock is right more frequently than a stopped one.
A calculator is a clock sometimes.

It's funny to me when their supreme leader keeps using ai generated videos to "own" his enemies. Did you all see the one of him as a doctor diagnosing TDS?
When you have trained your brain to accept any nonsense you choose to be the truth, then this weird propaganda becomes accepted as real in your brain.
Lefties should co-opt it
No. Co-opting shit is one of the worst tendencies that comes out of the left
But they could go and support it. Imagine organising a conservative anti-ai rally and getting met not with a counter protest, but with a horde of left/progressive people supporting your core message. It would be a head fuck and maybe enough to make you start questioning your reality and allegiances.
Supporting it is co-opting it
I would interpret "Co-opting" as taking it over from the inside and changing it's aims internally.
I wonder how many years until they find out what their legislators have been doing to promote AI?
A lot of them only recently found out that Bush admin gave Epstein a plea deal and that Reagan is largely responsible for the IRGC being sponsored by and alligned with China.
I'm not sure I've ever heard someone convert a commercial arrangement into sponsorship and alignment before.
Do go on.
Then, Reagan sold guns to the Contras in Iran who opposed Hezbollah in Lebanon and Sandinista in Nicaragua. This was a volatile time for Iran which had at this point lost trust in both sides of the cold war as the USSR declined and the US-backed regimes were dead and buried, so they really didn't like the CIA fucking around gun smuggling in their back yard AGAIN.
Now, Iranian guns and bombs come from China and Russia. They use those guns and bombs on westerner allies in the region. Sure, you can call that a "transactional relationship" but I doubt the anybody involved would say it's politically unmotivated. Xi Jinping has even paid them multiple personal visits to speak about the various regional affairs.
One could argue that without Chinese support the IRGC would have collapsed long long ago and that China uses Iran as a puppet state.
One could argue, but it would be a stupid argument.
China buys oil from Iran. This is not "supporting the IRGC". This is "buying oil because China needs fucking oil and is willing to circumvent bans to get it". China uses about 16 million barrels of oil PER DAY. 70% of that is imported. The Arab states are locked tight by the USA and its allies. So China buys from whoever is left. Which, realistically speaking, means Iran.
China sells military equipment and satellite time to Iran. This is not "supporting the IRGC". This is "selling goods".
Are there political motives? FUCK yes! There's political motives to any trade anywhere between any two countries. But it's a HUGE stretch to go from "China sells weapons and buys oil" to "China is using Iran as a puppet state". (For starters, why the flying FUCK would China tolerate a puppet state taking actions that threaten its own energy reserves? If Iran were an actual puppet state, the Strait of Hormuz would have been opened right the fuck up. The Chinese government really doesn't like the unrest that sudden price increases across the country causes.)
Let's shift the nations involved and test the sound bite:
See how idiotic that sounds, especially given that Denmark and Canada both are rather pissed at the USA and are pushing sanctions and boycotts?
When you see Chinese soldiers on the ground in Iran, perhaps as "advisors" or as "instructors" or the like, then maybe we can talk client state. When you see Chinese frigates patrolling the coast of Iran on its behalf, then maybe we can talk client state. When Iranian naval vessels do drills with Chinese ones in the China Sea, maybe we can then talk about client state. When there's Chinese military bases in Iran, then maybe we can talk about client state. Until then any talk of client state is geopolitical gibberish.
Lmao yeah okay it's okay to murder innocents and drink their blood as long as it means they don't have to agree to fair trade practices with the west. Maybe skin a couple of infants just for kicks. All is justifiable to prevent western
mutually beneficial commerceImperialism. The "drinking blood of children" thing is attached to Jews by bigots, not Chinese. Keep your bigotries straight, would you?
I note with interest you didn't actually address anything I said. Could it be because you've got nothing to say so you reach for your reflexive bigotry?
I'd wager it's both. That's the real crux of the issue here, is that I'm capable of condemning evil and you're only willing if it benefits your narrative.
This feels super weird. Would they turn liberals away if they showed up? (Or at least tell them to go protest across the street because "this side is for anti-globalists" or whatever.) I dunno, just seems odd to try to create a popular movement specifically by alienating people who would agree with them on that particular issue.
doubtful, since conservatives are almost always protesting out of selfishness, they voted for this to happen and just now they dont like it because its literally on thier doorsteps.
I'm going to see if my DSA Chapter can get some people to these protests and hand out lit.
Occupy Wall Street taught us one thing; trying to cooperate with conservatives is like trying to fuck a cactus. In theory, it could fit in that hole. In practice, it'll do more damage than anything else.
Tbf, the "damage" is state employed agitators showing up to sow demographical division because coming together against the 1% is too close to actually doing something and we need to be distracted lest something start to actually change, and the fallout from that.
But yeah, fair.
Holy shit that site is cancer, both visually and politically. I would love to be involved in a mass protest against AI, but I'd rather not feel obligated to punch a Nazi in the process.
Maybe the USA has finally found an issue to get behind and unify itself against?
I hate AI because I don't want some rando easily doxing me for no good reason anytime they want. I assume the other side wants the same. They don't want us to find out about all the little nasty evil things they do. I can get behind that, I understand.
Am... am I about to go to a conservative protest? That was not on my bingo card.
Edit: I'd be curious to hear from the AI data center fanboys down voting me.
Shit is gonna get weirder before it gets more normal. The end might be in sight but the ride ain't over. I'm pretty sure America First is what most Trump voters thought they were voting for. Not especially friendly on social policy but not controlled top-down like MAGA and the Tea Party. More American, less 'murica AFAIK
The end is only near if workers are on the same side. This might be the thing that does it.
Thanks for the list of targets. The enemy of my enemy isn't my friend, if they also explicitly consider me to be less than human
Your enemy is the capitalist class, not uneducated proles with a false sense of class solidarity.
¿Porque no los dos?
"The enemy of my enemy is my enemy's enemy. Nothing more."
Guess I'll have to ask AI to draw the state lines in on that map....
Good! Conservatives are KNOWN to Vote for Politicians that SUPPORT their Interests INSTEAD of voting for Literally whoever has an R by their name REGARDLESS of Policy! THIS will SCARE their Representatives STRAIGHT!
They are the easiest to rile up, and require the least evidence to be proven for the case you are making. You just have you sound passionate and constantly repeat how you want a better country for working class Americans and it all falls in to place. Say shit like we are getting cucked by Bibi, and big tech. Throw them a few freebies and talk shit about some safe ones like bill gates or mark zuckerberg. When they say something like Facebook bans you for not being woke just nod along and remind them that Ai is the tool doing that. systematically being used to take away your freedom of speech, and is the catalyist to why everyone needs their ID to even make a comment.
Sometimes you don't shy away from something because don't like it or are to thin skinned to let another persons opinions get in the way of your beliefs.
Sometimes you want to occupy "right adjecent" spaces and make them a little gay. Be the voice that interjects and calls out bullshit but does it in a way that appeals to that audience. Like maybe don't unsub from a channel you like once you learn their political beliefs, just be part of the community and try not to shit where you eat.
You gotta be the little ear worm in their ears. Whether it be a relative, a YouTube comment, your friend, whomever. Tell them the same facts you spout off on reddit, just add a little right wing twist to it. Maybe don't even make it about trump. Which is becoming less of an issue now. I don't know if you guys have noticed but the people I work with that are right wing are actually agreeing with me now when I say trumps a pedo or bring up Israel.
I think even the younger republicans who are on tiktok and weird live streaming apps are saying to vote Democrat almost as a punishment to their own party. The whole maga movement feels like its breaking down, and republicans as a whole are getting their brains melted and are very vulnerable to new ideas right now.
When they really sit down and think about it they want the same thing as us. They just have a filter that prevents them from being able to absorb certain shaped info. As soon as you find info that can get through just fucking flood it, and eventually it will all just snap and they'll get it.
“What!!! AI is helping men become pregnant?!?” /s
Nah I would go with something like "Prager U ai that is being forced into schools is teaching the kids that men can and WILL be forcibly pregenated by dom tops"
Then I would go on to say how the rich don't want ai in their schools and instead pay hundreds of thousands to go to private schools with no computers only 1 on 1 class sessions. I will go on to say how some how Prager U is stealing your tax payer money and making your kids more dumb and teaching them woke gay stuff, because the ai is dumb and made by israel.
I can AdLib this kind of stuff all day.
The whole thing kind of reads like a Progressive1 attempt to dress progressive ideas2 in traditionalist aesthetics in order to appeal to Conservatives.
Footnotes
More like Gray Tribe, actually ↩
Kind of weird that the current frontier of technology is considered conservative and opposing it is considered progressive - but here we are. ↩
lefties should use it as an opportunity for solidarity.
Nobody should show solidarity with those who voted for a pedophile.
then you will actually divide as a nation, theres no way around it. i'm personally not against that as a Canadian who doesn't want you invading us but I hope your prepared for what that will actually intale when the devide happens.
The United States has been divided for a long time now, even more so since 2016.
Ideologically yes, but not literally.
That divide has already happened. These people chose to support the worst pedophiles in modern history, they don't get to walk away from that. They need to carry that shame for life.
I don't care about the divide, I welcome it. As these people live their lives before they die, I want them to remain a cautionary tale for younger generations. Those generations will contain the same creeps that became Nazis and KKK and MAGA, and they will try to rise again in the future.
Those future generations need to remember back to what the MAGAs did back in the early 21st century, and slap them down hard when they get froggy again. Growing up seeing the old MAGAs get treated as pariahs will help them resist the new ones.
This is rich coming from a Canadian. Do you have solidarity with the Maple MAGA creeps trying to take your country in the same direction ours went?
You actually don't understand what I'm saying at all do you. I'm simply clerify what will happen, I in no way support the separatist movement your government started, but you didn't even think about that did you knee-jerk.
The people you are telling me to have solidarity with want me dead and want my country to be even worse than it already is. Oh, and they're the ones who want to invade yours. I'm not sure you understand what you're saying.
you act as if this single protest isnt out of selfishness, it is, they only care now because the AI DC are in thier counties with no restrictions. when since did the cons ever protested with "THE LEFT" on the more important things that happened recently. by the way its always been left vs right+ center right since reagan came around.
if a person responce is 'we will never be friends' to something like this then the end point of such a decision is inevitable. Get off your soup box you dork.
Yeah, like what Von Hindenburg and the liberals did in 1930s Germany, right?
Well, you already know that the logical outcome will be then, weather you want to hear it is another matter...
Too many gray areas (bodies of water) on that map with no red anywhere near them. The people there are going to be really surprised to learn that they've been living on some tech company's water all their lives, and that their local water board all retired and left the state at the same time.
When I was a kid back in the 1970's both the conservatives and the liberals were anti-AI. /s
Nobody will show up for that, because it means going against their orange pedo-daddy, and they are incapable of doing that.
Protest are for goverments that listen. These chuds chase cars.
