I just researched its etymology the other day. Colonizers encountering these thought they resembled pinecones, and apple was a generic word for fruit. Many countries wisely took the native word "anana" (Frenchies, etc) but Englishers had to make it their own. Hence the head empty Linnaean naming.

A friend pointed out the pineapples are bromeliads. This "flower" demonstrates it.
