'Scowling Void of Pure Nothingness': Critics Destroy $75 Million Melania Trump Documentary | Common Dreams

One particularly brutal review came from Nick Hilton, film critic for the Independent, who said that the first lady came off in the film as “a preening, scowling void of pure nothingness” who leads a “vulgar, gilded lifestyle.”

Hilton added that the film is so terrible that it fails even at being effective propaganda and is likely to be remembered as “a striking artifact... of a time when Americans willingly subordinated themselves to a political and economic oligopoly.”

I think we can officially conclude 2026 is The Year Of The Scowling Void Of Pure Nothingness

It was just a 75mil payment from Amazon to trump. Movie was just the means to do the transaction.

Coincidentally, Ratner just got greenlit for Rush Hour 4, which had been in development hell since 2018.

Jackie Chan is the best. Must be a little long in the tooth now.

Idk how you figure that. He is an actor, of course he's going to have relations to his home country.

1

He's always been a scummy fuck. He's good with kicks and punches, sure, and he figures heavily in the Panama papers. He's connected.

3

Yeah, but you wonder if he'd sign on to Rush Hour 4 now, knowing the director was in the Epstein files.

2

Even so, they had a massive budget, a competent director, and they didn't manage to produce something that paints her in a good light.

9

Don't get me wrong, he's scum, but he's an experienced director with several well-received movies under his belt. Both can be true.

2

The best way to launder money is to have a front that is legit. This way it pass the smell test if you just plug your nose a little.

I would assume bribes work the same way.

6

As usual, people are giving way too much credit to Trump. The money wasn't given to him, it was spent on making the shitty movie.

No. the 28M was for her per reporting. They still had to make the movie and advertise it.

This is becoming the new word that people just seem unable to get right and it is just as easy to understand as all the other common ones. It's seriously like there's a conscious campaign to make more and more people forget more and more basic words and grammar, and most of those that make those mistakes are American. You gotta be so dumb to not get this right.

1

I'm still flabbergasted how often people misspell "Epstein". Like, bruh, at this point...

What does that mean? I remember something on it's always sunny about that. I presume it's a smiting.

1

You know. Like that, almost laugh thing you do when something is just. Barely, funny enough.

Personally. I'm hoping when we fly these wax wings all the way to the sun and everything works out so great that a true artist and historian team up to make a mockumentary about the "Melania" production.

You have to sell the con or else someone might catch on.

Who makes a movie and then doesn't advertise it? Only fake movie and this is definitely not a fake movie. 😉😉

1

I hate that our country has become so fascist that this dumb bitch's movie failing feels like a victory.

46

Honestly I am shaken, if something this good could fail what is the meaning of anything?

I wish it was nothing, but for Canadians, America is a big scowling dictatorship of pure evil.

Take your fucking country back.

I love Canada, but this holier than thou mindset I keep seeing is getting tired. Remember Poilievre was polling ~20 points higher than Carney, until Trump started his 51st state horse shit. The entire world seems to be swinging right, and Canada just got lucky this time.

We are all in this together whether you want to be or not.

10

Indeed. All of europe will fall if we don't get popular reform to challenge the far right, now backed by the US and Russia, running themselves as reform and all other major parties captured by the establishments/oligarchies.

7

this holier than thou mindset

It's totally okay not to project. It's okay to just be concerned and worried and insignificant like the rest of us without alienating your best refugee destination.

2

Not with these democrats and these dumb motherfuckers still trust them. They are quite vicious about it too.

i assume some kind of hollywood accounting where they can write the unprofitable movie off their taxes

3

This is half of it. The other half is the $30M bribe rendered to the Trump family, effectively laundered under the guise of making a documentary. They'll make their money back coming and going.

7

The old story. Churches and other MAGA groups are buying blocks of seats. It's playing to "sold out" empty houses.

Mel brooks should do a Producers about Maga. Too soon?

the same way the Trump family obtains most things they want, fraud.

33

The only people that would go see this are Trump cultists, who are going to approve of it regardless of quality

7

Because the only people who'd ever see it are either members of the cult or reviewers being paid to see it.

1% of the audience being reviewers and the rest deciding that it's amazing before seeing it and not changing their mind when proven wrong sounds pretty plausible 🤷

6

They might be filtering out the deluge of bad reviews as anomaly or political.

5
lemmy.zip

These dumb shits don't get it. It was never supposed to be good. It was a bribe. Even wasting a second watching it to do a review is a waste of human effort.

What's the point in review-bombing when it's so obvious?

15

Nick Hilton... said that the first lady came off in the film as “a preening, scowling void of pure nothingness” who leads a “vulgar, gilded lifestyle.”

He's saying it's accurate then?

15

Remember when people tried to frame her as a victim? What stank of a person.

14

There’s no way this thing cost $75 mil to make. It’s a documentary.

12
lemmy.today

Why would movie critics go to see a money laundering attempt?

12
Nikeluireply
lemmy.world

Because it's their job? They can't just watch what they like.

11

No, the director is laundering money. The movie critic is the one stuck watching the crappy movies.

The funniest thing about this is she isn't even hot. She looks like every soccer mom in every suburban town everywhere.

12
Achreply

It's not an insult. I didn't say soccer moms are all-encompassingly unattractive, just that she ain't anything special. She's a "super model" who looks like every lady in front of me at the super market.

5
lemmy.today

She "was" a supermodel. Now she's just a woman who gets cheated on, publicly, by her husband.

5

Way worse. Those vapid all american soccer moms have that MILF next door vibe, Melania just looks like an Eastern European prostitute possessed by a lizard.

3

She looks like every soccer mom in every suburban town everywhere

More like every self employed sex therapist hanging around hotel bars.

1

That's also an accurate description of narcissism—a void of nothingness. Those people only live on the outside, because they don't exist within themselves

I guess the Mango Mussolini cult is just two and a half times as popular as the Tom Cruise cult 🤷

The 2025 version didn't have Tom Cruise

2

It had Ice Cube, and I can't, for the life of me, understand why the fuck people keep giving that man work.

Ghost of Mars, that horrible XXX sequel, War of the Worlds, shit... they are remaking Anaconda? That's going to suck, too.

75 million dollars. 75. Million. Dollars.

How much of it went to the crew and other people who actually made the damn thing?

Or even used for their benefit in other way, for that matter - I'm asking because apparently the crew did overtime hours with no food while the director lorded over the underlings and stuffed his face. (Don't do overtime if your boss isn't personally ordering you a ton of pizza, guys.)

10

I read somewhere that about $24 million of it went straight to Melania.

Unfortunately, boomer women have made it a box office hit.

8

I have zero doubts that MAGA money is being spent on buying out showings and that the propaganda machine is running at 110%. I also do not doubt that a lot of boomer and older Gen-X/Jones MAGA women in are going to see it. These are not.mutually exclusive things.

EDIT: the article is from The Hollywood Reporter, which is definitely not right leaning.

6

You'd like to think so, but my hardcore maga step mom and sister are all over fb singing it's praises on high. Some people are so invested in this shit, that they cannot admit the truth.

4

It’s like those religious movies where people buy up tickets en masse but no one actually goes to the movie. Or those political books where the party buys up boxes and boxes of them to get the book on the best seller list, but no one actually reads it.

3

Its official budget was $40 million (presumably before marketing), so I'm not sure that this can be called a hit on an $8 million box office

10

Just for giggles I checked my local theater yesterday afternoon. There were 6 seats purchased for the 6:30 show, and, as of 9:15, none for the 9:30 showing. On a Saturday night.

10
sh.itjust.works

I wonder if it's like book sales, where a publisher or other entity buys a ton of copies to make it a "Best-seller". Are the seats being filled, or are the tickets just bought out to make it appear more successful?

9

Yes. Conservative groups are buying out whole theatres that then show the movie to empty seats.

10

I loved the one from the Guardian comparing it to Zone of Interest. Utterly boring but makes you think about the off-screen horrors of the Trump regime
