AI works, we lose our jobs.
AI doesn't work, bubble pops, we lose our jobs.
AI sorta kinda works, wages get depressed and things turn into a dystopian hellhole.
Not that much reason to be positive and he doesn't know how to fix it.
I guess it's implied, but he doesn't have a solution because for him it's not a problem, it's the intended result.
Like that time they asked Peter Thiel if he thinks the human race should survive, and there was this long pregnant pause.
Isn't the optimal situation here that AI doesn't really work but we all keep believing the bubble?
Wow the tech bros are just tryna save us
That's what they've been trying to do by coming up with the next new shiny thing to invest in. Remember Blockchain, NFT and the like.
Still, the layoffs are here, so even if the bubble gets its time extended it won't help the situation for many.
I'm not in the USA but layoffs happen all the time when the economy contracts, the thing is they always need an excuse, and I don't know is AI is really eating up jobs (I sort of doubt it, at least for now) but man is it the best excuse ever.
How I see the USA:
Henderson, how's the Q2 forecast?
Not good, we need $1M!
Just fire 10 people!!
Yeah, USA economy is stagnating or shrinking and it's just the AI bubble holding everything up.
Which means we can focus on the work we want to do, rather than the work we have to do... right?
Cue Sam Altman saying abundance every two sentences but never explaining how that would work.
O, oh... Somebody's worried about their investment...
Nvidia stock price has been flat since September. Almost 6 months. He's feeling the pressure.
Time to go down
Not to Jensen though
Absolutely to Jensen, before she took his last dime.
I can get used to the billionaires begging me.
Fuck AI
Okay, I’m positive it’s a waste of energy since it doesn’t work.
It does work for me. I use it and it is helping a lot.
Unless you are working on some engineering or scientific problem that needs these models to get to a solution, even if it works for you, it's still a waste of energy.
I had heavy problems to solve. Claude Opus could solve some. I could solve them too, but with claude it's faster. One recent problem would take around two days if I would do it, but claude did it in half an hour.
I'm not advertising claude, if it gives bullshit response I turn it off instantly. Like with every tool, you need to learn to use it.
Another example: In the app I work on, there's a huge list of city integration files. I had a loose set of specifications for a new city, and with claude I could roll out a new prototype in no time. It saved me about a month of work.
It's expensive and energy hungry for sure.
A tankie using AI, that's amusing. Could you explain why?
If I am the tankie you must be the lgbtq femboy. There's nothing wrong with it. We are here for different reasons :D.
Stereotypes aside, aren't you using one?
They are useful.
Who sets you those deadlines? This is just out of curiosity.
These are not deadlines. A task takes what it takes. We only provide an estimation.
It sometimes works for me. But the old computer truth of garbage in garbage out still applies. It's got the world's garbage to sift through.
If everyone's just gonna down vote this I'm not sure there's any room for understanding in this crowd
Looks like you're the one without understanding.
Even if I grant that there's a few super helpful uses that are good for humanity (and I don't grant that at all), it's still actively harmful to the other 99.3% of us.
Unless you're saying it can end cancer, keep us young forever, provide literally limitless energy, and instantaneous networking, all while giving us potential to explore the universe, then it's still not worth what it's costing us RIGHT NOW.
Until you can make it do any of that without being owned or pushed by CEOs for money, then it will never be worth it.
Sure it could be useful if it didn't cost anything and did everything, but that's about as far as I believe it.
It should stay in the research and theory phase until it's perfect. And it never will be, hence most people attitudes on it. No. 00000001% change of finding a good execution of a use is worth what it is costing us to try out.
The issue is people downoting him for stating a simple fact.
Like, I also use AI a bit, it can hepp productivity a lot too, and my opinion is still that overall if we had no ML at all the world woild be a better place than now, and that's despite the many extremely good use cases for ML and even LLMs.
Even having a conversation about that will take a while to happen because most people think that AI literally means something like ChatGPT.
I don't know enough about the other kinds to say much definitively, but I do completely invalidate generative AI being of any possible use as I understand it. Other than as a tech demo. Seeing what Sora could do was interesting as a matter of curiosity about what it was possible to get to happen with it current tech.
But I don't think it should ever be used as literally anything other than a demo of what is literally possible.
My point is the group here has made it quite clear there's no room for honest discussion. And that's pretty weak.
There would be, if it was any less black and white. Show something worth discussing and people would jump at that conversation.
Given that they're doesn't seen to be much coming up in that vein, there's no room. Room would be made of there was something to make room for.
Billionaire tech bros stole all of the information on the internet and are using to make CSAM. it’s making all our energy prices increase and using up all of our water.
If you really can’t understand why people aren’t into that I really don’t know what else to tell you.
You really just prove my point. Someone posted they found a good use for it and you just want to scream at them. That's not a discussion.
Except that no one screamed at them. Everyone posted a reasonable explanation as to why ai is a slop of shit. If that’s not a discussion then I don’t know what to tell you.
Now you can be sure.
Hell no, and Nvidia can fuck right off with this shit, right alongside MS, and anyone else who pulls this crap.
GenAI is a scam and I will continue to refer to it as such as long as free speech still exists in my country.
I smoked weed when it was illegal. I'll speak freely when it's illegal.
And one day I'll shit on Art Modell's grave. That's not really relevant to AI, but I'm still gonna do it.
just one more slop bro. I promise bro just one more slop and it'll fix everything bro. bro, just one more slop. please just one more, one more slop and we can fix this whole problem bro, bro cmon just give me one more slop i promise bro, bro bro please! just need one more slop
AI built on a very specific data set to help experts, researchers. health professionals, etc. I have no issues with people using it as a tool.
What I don't need, want, or like is AI being in my fridge, summazing a two line email, creating art, a glorified chat bot or anything outside of very limited and niche uses.
"[It's] extremely hurtful, frankly, and I think we've done a lot of damage," he said.
Weird, I didn't know both Jensen and I felt the same way about AI.
“It’s not helpful. It’s not helpful to people. It’s not helpful to the industry. It’s not helpful to society. It’s not helpful to the governments,”
Why? It totally sucks and is ruining the world in almost every corner. Fuck AI with a sharp stick.
He's one of the richest men in the world and you're harshing his vibes. Isn't that enough?
Good. I want his vibe harshed.
You don’t have to ask yourself that because it’s common sense. He’s being disingenuous about AI’s potential to harm society, and stating the intent is to suffocate startups…they’re not making a new instant messaging client. I want to smack him upside the head.
He's literally doing a 'think of the children' (startups).
Get rekt nerd.
It's destroying our economy, our ecology, our politics, our society. What's not to like?
Accelerationists have never been more bullish.
To be fair, capitalism is inherently incompatible with advancements in robotics and AI. Doesn't mean the technology is destroying the economics and society. The socio-economic system was already broken to begin with.
Mostly so that lonely losers can chat to a bot, have an AI partner or generate garbage.
Over 40% of the use is for completely stupid things and it seems those users have zero issues burning our planet so they can do dumb shit.
In a aociety where mental health is completely overlooked and treatments unavailable for most people and/or extremely expensive, it's a very easy way to get at least some respite for many people.
And sure, it can harm some people too, but it's understandable why it's used like that.
People: AI is cool, I could use it to get my work done faster.
Billionaires: Fuck you, we’ll just replace you completely.
But yeah, let’s stop complaining.
Even if I could find a use for it, I still wouldn't because of how error prone it is. If I have to double check the output, why should I even bother? Fuck of Jensen. Get bankrupt'd.
No. My negativity towards AI fuels my continued existence.
Oh no, not his feelings!
"Don't be like that guys, I want to make more money"
"I don't want the gigantic teetering tower of AI money to fall down and crush me."
Every f'ing day for the last two years I have had AI stores shoved in my face. Now I'm suppose to be happy about it?
I would have a lot less negativity around AI if the mag 7 and all AI companies agreed to sign a contract to be nationalized once they have automated a significant amount of jobs, with their profits to be used for a national basic income. I would be much more positive in that case, Jensen. Give it some thought.
Jensen Huang:
Yeah people. Stop being selfish fucks. Think of the shareholders for once in your life.
As the primeagen recently said : If it weren't shit, we wouldn't be saying it's shit.
That is a great way to make me start being negative about this Jensen guy
"Just pour money and we'll solve these little problems, trust me bro, just a few trillion more, we're almost there" vibes
I like LLMs and use them a lot for boring task. It's a nice tool, but I'd love to see it being marketed as such, and not as a panacea or a catastrophe. And gosh, I'd love people to stop shoving it down people's throats. No, Adobe, I don't need a summary, and I see it's a long document, stop wasting time and resources...
I see this issue similar to music industry.
Musicians would complain that modern mainstream music is crap and is ruining good music for years. Major Labels would say "fuck you, we do what we want" to them. Music enjoyers would support musicians. But vast majority of listeners wouldnt care about what they are listening to.
Now changing some words around:
Technicians/Programmers would complain that AI/LLM is crap and is ruining internet/peoples minds for years. Big Tech would say "fuck you, we do what we want" to them. Power users would support technicians/programmers. But vast majority of normie users wouldn't care about what they utilize/consume online.
Most of humanity doesnt care.
No thanks, I'm good
"Please drink my Kool-aid"
"and please don't be so negative about the cyanide and tranquilizers."
“It’s extremely hurtful”
Not enough tho.
Stop shoving it down our throats. You do not get to choke someone and expect them to like it, moron
We have a choice on how we feel about these scripts you guys call intelligent.
SlopVidia
Complaining about imaginary regulatory capture for non-existent regulations because 100 billion isn't enough blood money, also only CEO quotes no labor leaders.
Nah
He is also, obviously, an idiot.
AI = overhype. Start evidencing actual effectiveness, Stop / kill use to speed bullshit Stop / kill use to create CSAM
Oh, does it hurt? I sure hope so!
Sounds like the guidance you use to get in the 80s about finding a ditch to crawl into and covering yourself in leaves if the "bomb" gets dropped so you were easier to clean up.
He just wants people to go away quietly whilst he profits.
We can be negative about him, if he prefers that way: He's about as useful as his beloved AI, after all...
Yeah nah, the AI shit himself as well as the industry as a whole is peddling isn’t as useful as they say it is, even with the “revolutionary new Gemini 3 models”, which are just slop convo generators. The thing is, when AI is thrusted into a person’s line of sight, the label doesn’t make it so they impulsively rework their entire workflow to be the exact same in terms of quality but use an AI instead, most people brush it off as system bullshit they don’t need, and even if it could help with some things in some capacity, it’s marketed as a “feed everything into me and you can use me for everything” machines, when honestly more accurate, smaller and specialised models should be made instead, even if their purpose is also a bit dubious too.
And sure, it might seem contradictory, but I do use an AI, but it’s pretty much just for brainstorming and conversational shit for refining my ideas through just articulating them, but I really dislike how my computers are full of AI services for no reason, with a few of my laptops with copilot baked in, another with Gemini baked in, and what have you.
I suppose the only good thing that came out from LLMs would just be the increase from 8 to 16gb of ram on many machines, but then again, it had to drop again because of said AI companies.
Oh geez, so your electric bills go up a little bit. But in 4 more years they'll make so much money you'll never have to work any more, just party until the day you die!
Maybe he can take one of his overpriced GPUs, and use it to PositveGen. Similar to FrameGen, they're trying to push to customers, they can use it to run a local AI model that every 2-3 negative posts, his machine will hallucinate a fake positive post for him to see. It won't link to anything and it won't be backed by anything real, but think of the innovation! I see it as a win for him.
NEVER!!!
well stop shoving it in my face everywhere and I wouldn't be bothered enough to comment on it
We should be progressive enough to attempt to try and tackle the worlds problems but the best we can do, despite all of the upheaval, is sell shit to each other.
There is an AI angle that COULD work it's just unfortunate that nobody is using AI in this way.
Instead of replacing creatives the way it does now, it could be used as a tool to inform creatives.
For example, not linking the product because they aren't paying me to shill for them, but there is a brand of AI enhanced guitar amplifier. You use the prompt in the app to tell it what sound you're looking for and it will do all the amp and pedal settings to make that happen.
"jazz guitar tone with a touch of reverb" or even specific bands and songs.
You STILL have to be able to play the guitar, it's not going to do that for you, but it will save you hours of knob twiddling and pedal swapping to get the sound (or an approximation of the sound) you're looking for.
Applying this to other creative fields, a novelist could use it to generate character names, or an artist could use it to come up with a color palette. I don't think either of those would be objectionable because the creative still controls what happens after the fact.
It's when the slop starts writing, painting, or playing for you that it becomes a problem and that's where we are now.
Friendly rebuttal. I don't like this version either because of two reasons. First is that it is still using stolen material to do any of this "creative work". Second: the knob twiddling, mixing colors, and all versions of that are integral to the creation process. Happy accidents are why we have a lot of what we have in the creative world. Somone chasing a specific sound might discover their own sound while twiddling away for hours. They will be able to do that in a much more replicable and modifyable way than the black box that is "AI". But that's just my opinion as an amature creative.
It's part of the creative process, but it's also it's own rabbit hole. 😉 I do like having 42 simulated amps and 56 simulated effects pedals on tap without spending 10s of thousands of dollars, but fiddling with them is it's own deal aside from playing and is, apparently, never ending. LOL.
But OTOH, if I want to try my hand at a specific song, I can get there without having to research every last bit of tech that went into it.
You're right though, locking in "my own sound" is still do-able. The manual selection is all still there.
I quit all that tech & dozens of learning curves when I realized I was spending more time in the tech zone that than on music. Think how technically shitty that record 'Louis, Louis' was, yet it got covered thousands of times. Can't 'quantize' or 'EQ' or 'reverb' or 'mike arrange' or '24-track' a great song.
One of my favorite artists has his gear list on his website:
https://smither.com/etc/gear-bag/
"Pickup
Who knows what they put in those things?
DI
Who cares?"
LOL.
Reading the other day a June 2011 Elec. Musician mag. Story on Moby in it, he'd collected hundreds of old analog boxes, after digital came along. Used to make his 'Destroyed' album.
Knowing how to use your e.g. amp and different effects is as much an artistic skill as being able to play. Knowing how to select the color palette is as much a skill as doing the painting itself. What you're describing is no different than me (with zero painting/drawing skills) being able to get a great detailed idea for a visual design and just using AI to get it in to existence.
