Meanwhile, being a cop isn't even in the Top 10 of the most dangerous jobs. Some lists don't even put it in the top 20. I've had two jobs that are always in the Top 5, and I've never gone around demanding respect because I had a dangerous job. In fact, I never even thought about the dangers, and didn't know they were considered so dangerous until years later, and saw a list of dangerous jobs. Even if I knew, I would have kept doing the job.

But cops want to remind literally EVERYBODY, literally every moment of the day. Fucking cowards.

“Nice” and “kind” seem mutually exclusive with “committed, conservative Christian”

and also with shooting a woman in the face for nudging you with her vehicle because you weren't following policy about not standing in front of vehicles while she was trying to turn around in an extremely stressful situation.

17
lemmy.today

I got my mother to understand the situation when I aggressively asked her what she'd do if a bunch of people started running at her car, screaming and pointing guns at her, telling her she has two seconds to decide, so decide RIGHT NOW!

She said she'd try to stop for the police, but I kept pushing her hard, asked if she was sure she'd hit the brake, or if she might hit the gas, and lurch a bit, and she said that might happen, and I said "BANG! BANG! You just got shot in the face. Did you deserve it?"

She gets it now.

16

Yeah, the shooter's phone video is available now and imo pretty much shows this. There's people walking around on all sides of her vehicle while she's trying to turn around. The shooter circled it completely. That kind of thing makes it really hard to keep track of where everyone is at. She also clearly doesn't point the wheels at him when she went forward but she did clip him (which if he was following policy wouldn't have happened). She fucked up but it wasn't a reason to shoot her. His actions are indefensible.

8

No, no, you don't understand. They're "nice" and "kind" to their own ingroup. It's impossible for someone to be bad when they act good around us!

74

If even 50% of "christians" gave a fuck about what Jesus said, we wouldn't be here.

16

But that's not really true. If you are a trinitarian then what Yahweh said is also what Jesus said. But even so people apparently haven't actually read their bible. Jesus was exclusionary, used racial slurs for tribes he didn't like, told everyone to continue the same barbaric treatment found in the Old Testement.

I would argue a true Christian would be considered part of the "radical left" and that conservativism is an anathema to chistianity.

11

Why did you skip the part where Jesus said he is here to fulfill the law, not abolish it. That we must continue the old law that told you how to get slaves from the nations around you and how to properly beat them, or to kill a woman if she doesn't bleed her first time. I think only those who haven't actually studied the bible would think Jesus was this great guy.

2
Hylactorreply

I actually am seriously claiming that the Spanish conquistadors were not Christian. As enslaving, oppressing, and getting rich, are counter indicated by the bible. The inconsistency is not mine, it is the "followers" of the bible.

4
Hylactorreply
sopuli.xyz

You seem pretty emotionally invested, so I will recommend that as I am not particularly invested, if it is easier for you, I give you total freedom to ignore my individual opinion. I'm just one man, feel free to ignore me. But what I've quoted is primarily direct quotes from Jesus (per the bible), or taken from Exodus, which is about as foundational as it gets Christianity wise.

I agree that the bible is a poor source of clarity. It is all over the map as far as rules, and not very consistent. But I'm not talking apocryphy here, I'm talking straight up 10 commandments shit. The core "do unto others", and "don't be greedy", and "be grateful", stuff that the whole thing is supposed to be based on.

I think ultimately we are arguing the same thing: That there is something to justify anything within the labyrinthian maze that is biblical logic. But where we diverge is that you are willing to call anyone who claims to be Christian, Christian. And I'm trying to highlight how an overwhelming majority of Christians are anything but.

My original point is that the brown shirt, class traitor, gestapo, murderer "christian" is just about as Christian as the king asshole there in the white house: ie, not at all. I'm attempting to call attention to the painfully paradoxical relationship between those who call themselves Christians and their estimation of the importance of things such as compassion, charity, humility, simplicity, community, and introspection.

6

But part of the issue is you are cherry picking WHAT JESUS SAID. You're literally justifying their actions by trying to pretend like their book doesn't give them justification.

Jesus said that you must continue the laws previously set by their god. His generic "be nice" message doesn't supersede the horrible treatment of others the rest of the book promotes. And the part you're missing is that all the shitty things people do now they can go back to the book and say "look, its says this is all ok. Even Jesus agrees" because it does say that.

This is what happens in all of the highly violent religions. There are good and bad parts and everyone wants to pretend like the bad parts aren't there. They want to say that people are manipulating the word to justify things when honestly they aren't. These books were created by people who wanted to justify their own actions, their own grabs for power. They invent gods and create stories to show that the horrible stuff they do is ok because their god says so.

The people you're saying aren't Christian are Christian. Sadly they most likely haven't read their own book, haven't actually studied it in depth. And the ironic part is that even then most of them still are following what the book says even when doing horrible things.

1

Just using the word tremendous (orange toddler special) to describe him, should tell us about the what kind of household he was raised in.

Yeah, I dislike when people moderate their beliefs and opinions around the most recent event that made them feel an emotion. If the person above advocates the death penalty for this guy, it implies they advocate for the death penalty in general, and that's mega fucked. But almost as fucked is the notion that their opinion changed entirely based on their emotion in this moment. It means they have little or no foundation for their own ethics and ideology. It means they're potentially reactionary, untrustworthy, or ideologically immature. It means that they cannot argue for or consistently demand a coherent vision for a better world. It's a huge liability.

The agent shot him in the back of the neck and killed him. Completely unjustified. He had lived in the US since he was 18. Undocumented but not a criminal, just dropped his kids off at school, worked as a line cook.
A sane country would have provided a path to citizenship or deported him back to Mexico instead of shooting him in the streets. No reason to escalate to a point where the agent is in danger and felt compelled to kill someone. Just let him get away and catch him at home. Worst case is that you don't and he continues to be a productive member of society and make food for people. Shit drives me nuts.
