Uuuh... I mean, even putting aside the AI aspect, they are taking one of their most known and trusted brand names and ... changing it into one of their absolute worst.... ? What kind of mental gymnastics is this?

Next quarterly report: "Usage of Copilot has increased 500,000% in the last quarter"

67

This, right here. This is EXACTLY what happened.

36

I mean that was far dumber. That's on par with some other manufacturers who recently ditched their century old logo to go with a boring font. Name brand recognition is a thing, and they have experts in their PR that can tell them that.

19

Literally no reason to worry about branding when Word is synonymous with word processor and Excel is synonymous with spreadsheet. The only real competition is Google Drive, but they are shoving Gemini into everything too so...

It reminds me when augmented reality was the tech buzzword (lasted only a few months, but it did happen) and you'd go at those tech conferences and absolutely random companies would try shoving AR in their banners, so you'd see stuff like "AR/VR light switch" and as bizarre as that was it meant they got more investor money lol

Or blockchain, internet of things, smart everything, big data, 3D TVs, wearable tech. The cycle never ends.

The difference with the AI bubble is that it’s at the scale of the dot com bubble now.

6

This is actually good news to me. I assumed the AI bubble was WaAY larger than the dot com bubble already.

1

I mean, this is the same company that came up with the naming conventions for the Xbox, so it's about par for the course.

scribe.disroot.org

Microslop's naming scheme has always been completely insane, its like their marketing department is a six year old child. You give them the new word you want to show up often, and instead of thinking of natural ways to implement it, they just fucking shove the word everywhere.

"Copilot" is the word now, so "Microsoft 365 Copilot", a sequence of words that mean absolutely nothing, replaces "Microsoft Office" which is one of the most well known and memorable software names ever.

45

That's cheating, you stopped when it got hard.

Xbox series M

Xbox Series G

Xbox Series 2

Xbox Y

... Or something like that.

3

Before that wasn't it "365" of everything? What's next, "Office 365 Copilot Windows 11"?

11

I'd go with Slop-a-lot. Where does the "a" come from you ask? Just hallucinate it being there ofc!

The 365 helpfully lets know know how many days a year it produces slop. Except during leap years, when it's named 366 Slopilot.

Imagine if Office '97 was officially named and sold as 'Clippy' back in the day.

ROFL Pathetic, Microslop pushing this hard and pathetically to get people generating more slop is so sad. The promises they couldn't keep are catching up with them, any sane company would've given up by now. Sadly, a core group in Microsoft Execs have been prompt injected with AI hope-posting and might never recover. Remember everyone, never talk to computers, not even once!

Please bro please just don't call it slop please I'm begging you please bro

I think this is dumber than renaming twitter to X.

Renaming twitter to x - at least it was a straight rename.

Office to Copilot? They already had a product named copilot, so now what is the old copilot? Microsoft 365 Copilot Copilot? I just want to use Microsoft 365 Copilot Excel without Microsoft 365 Copilot (formerly Microsoft 365, formerly Microsoft Office) Copilot

Imagine trying to explain what "Copilot" is to your 70 year old grandmother

Had Microsoft been good at naming things? Remember there was one Xbox One X box in your closet?

7

it's the one where the console plays itself so you can get back to fixing errors in the excel file you had opened from earlier which copilot decided to edit for some reason.

2

I think this is dumber than renaming twitter to X.

But not as dumb as renaming Remote Desktop to "Windows App".

3

Interesting, I did the whole rigamarole about a year ago to downgrade to a non-AI version of Office (for a cheaper sub too), I wonder how this will impact that.

I have used FOSS alternatives in the past but seeing how I use Office apps at work it's just what I'm more familiar with. I'd like to move off of it but we are also sharing a family sub with some others.

ETA: Our current one is 365 Family Classic and so far it doesn't say anything is changing. Love how they don't advertise that option to new sign-ups, you literally have to agree to one of the slop tiers and then 'downgrade'.

18

Based I hate Microsoft and i am praying for their downfall.

I have a simple excel file I need to add one line to it every day. Despite having already other xls files open, it takes about 20sec to open! File is totally local, I have 32GB and SSD. This is not going to get better isn't it?

13

Libre Office starts in like 1 second and works with about 99% of all standard Excel Sheets (the ones without macros or heavy cross-linking to sharepoint)

9

I'm going to tell my wife that we can now use open office since word doesn't exist anymore.

8

Any bets on who wins the rebrand war?

People stop calling it Twitter first or people stop calling it Office first?

In Vancouver, Science World was technically renamed like 20 years ago.

I still call it Science World.

3

The museum was branded as Science World at Telus World of Science under a naming rights agreement with sponsor Telus Corporation from 2005 to 2020 before it reverted to its original name.

Well, you're back to being technically and factually correct now.

4

How soon before Windows is renamed to the 'Microsoft 365 Copilot OS' and the ability to install and run it locally at all is discontinued, and it's turned exclusively into a cloud-based OS that you have to pay a subscription to access?

6

Introducing the "Microsoft 365 Slop app"

What about schools/universities that ban using AI, they will have to ban using Sloffice 365.

5

Crazy how a company like this can't understand that something like the name office is forever associated with people as the office product. Doing this will guarantee less sales due to people having no idea what this is. Confusing the basic person is incredibly easy. I guess their loss.

5

Windows 11 is going to be a live service subscription required product to continue usage.

Edit: this story was apparently blown out of proportion but I still stand behind what I said above

5

Desperation has set in. They literally renamed a once-popular product just so they could claim X more people using Copilot.
