That's a bit sad

They were kinda little time capsules of various corners of YouTube adjacent internet culture over time

The only good thing YT Rewind was for was finding out what kind of boring bullshit channels normies watch.

38

Yeah all you gotta do is open it in a private browsing window and see the stream of aI nonsense to know what most morons are watching, or at least clicking.

See they're running out of disk space though. Preserving history is so much less important than 58 minute video essays about [insert any banal topic].

Unlisting just means they're not shown in searches, the video is still available, so storage has nothing to do with it

Babe you've never unlisted your old (cringe) Minecraft tutorials. What a childhood lol

7

Lol I have actually do have some unlisted videos, I just forgot what that meant until I was reminded

I'm sorry Will, looks like it's no longer rewind time 😞

I gotta ask, is this a common thing? I've never seen any of that. Not that I don't believe it exists, but I have a hard time believing it's among the most popular topics.

go open youtube in a private tab and see how long it takes for an innocuous video to get a recommended video from the manosphere, rightwingtube, or magaworld. youtube pushes nazi shit hard. if they're not pushing it on you, it usually means their mathematical model for determining who right wing propaganda works best on indicates you're not a good target, in which case they'll mostly push meaningless drivel.

youtube and youtube culture have been dying a right wing nazi death for a decade now. all the best things people were doing are on patreon and nebula now

16

Christian shit too, it’s snagged my FIL recently too. The new Catholic movement has a lot of overlap with the MAGA Nazis

In early first trump presidency there was a very real and concerning centrist to nazi pipeline on YouTube

10

The shifts to the nazi right in america have been a decades long psyop.

You can never kill an idea.

And the efficiency to eugenics pipeline was always there, just waiting for people to lack long term vision and collective goals.

7

Bc plenty of participants of those videos are cancelled, right?

2

It was a great way of showing off YouTube talent. There were meaningful trends on YouTube for a while and these videos were a way to celebrate what went viral for the year.

That these videos are harder to make speaks a lot to how YouTube has changed as a platform.

I assumed it's probably due to some creators becoming, or later being discovered as, "problematic" and/or some sort of brand risk. It would look more strange to unlist a few of them, so better to unlist all of them.

To be clear: This is speculation based on zero information 🙃. Just a total guess based on how things tend to go between internet culture and corporations. I'm probably wrong. It would be cool if YouTube would communicate things like this.

It's unfortunate to see such cultural history hidden away. Though, tbh, this is probably the most that I've ever thought about YouTube Rewind, and I haven't thought about it in many years.

never been happier to have only followed the grace, hannah, mamrie, tyler, hank, john, and dan + phil youtuber scene.

Why is this even mildly infuriating? Who's that emotionally invested in a corporation and a bunch of influencers patting each other on the back?

49

More like preserved out-of-touch-ness, a reminder that youtube's been terrible for a long long time

0

Marketing videos, mostly. Ostensibly they're original videos showcasing some of the talent and content from the previous year. The last couple of years have been particularly bland, though, as I understand it.

They shouldn't exist because you don't know what they are?

-5

Maybe they just don't know and are asking for community context.

15
piefed.social

How os asking what they are the same as saying they shouldn't exist?

I'm so tired of all the bad faith bs on this site.

1
Tilgarereply
lemmy.world

Maybe it was my own misunderstanding.

Why have them?

If this doesn't mean, "why should they even exist?" what was it that you meant here? Because that's what you ask first, before you ask what they are.

3

mander.xyz

Why? They have a monopoly. They do whatever the fuck they want.

2

In the past the videos were always shit and people would thus shit on them in the comments/ratings, so it might be to hide how much shittier it's getting. For example if there is so much generated content that it would take up a chunk of the video, or it might even be that they've fired the talent who normally create the rewinds and replaced them with AI, which would be fairly obvious to detect if it was used for this kind of thing because it probably would do a shit job. *If they are not producing them anymore.

I think unlisted means they just won’t appear in search/recommended, but can still be viewed if you link directly to them

64
lemmy.world

Oh… maybe done so the new one is the only result? That makes this a hell if a lot less of an issue.

sh.itjust.works

Rewinds haven't been produced in like a decade

Half a decade *

I wanted to be right about rewind being dead to badly I guess.

17

That's because pewdiepie had to make a real one after the first flop and it ruined their motivation.

7

Wlep there it is....

I mean I'm still not touching it with a 10 foot pole featuring me beast, but hey, YouTube do YouTube.

0
sh.itjust.works

Maybe ones coming today or tomorrow…?

Your point is yet to stand, there could be a very valid reason it just changed today.

-1

They stopped making them because everyone laughed at the last one with will smith.

If one is coming, it's going to be AI slop. But I doubt it.

7

"Unlisted" means you can't find any of them via search or on the creator's page. But if you still have the URL, you can view them directly

Which includes public playlists other people have created

22

Fucken Markiplier is on like half of them. Nothing against the guy just kinda funny that he's been notable for so long, also some of those did not age well.

2
lemmy.world

I've been on YouTube from pretty much the start and have never seen a Rewind. Do only Americans get them?

12

They were a video published and produced by Youtube themselves, showing the most popular videos on the platform, making jokes, etc. It's the same video for everyone. It's not like the "rewinds" some companies do showing your activity for the year.

Here is 2013( I think this was the best one).

21
lemmy.ca

To this day I still have no idea what it is, and I don't wanna bother looking it up.

So they invite a select group of artists from the platform who made big gains that year to be a part of something like a YouTube holiday special.

The problem with it is corporate is so out of touch that in 2018 they invited mid-controversy Will Smith and a bunch of K-Pop stars to do the video, almost plays like their target audience is barely pubescent boys and girls. It became less about the community and more about promoting content for monetary purposes.

The YouTube Rewind videos are in the list of the most disliked videos of all time, with the 2018 Rewind being at 20 Million dislikes, surpassing "Baby Shark Dance" at just under 15 Million and "Justin Beiber - Baby" at 12 Million.

17

That was just about the time they got rid of public downvotes, unsurprisingly

8

Many moons ago, youtube partnered with the biggest content creators on there to make a video capturing what was trending throughout the year
