Yet another reason to avoid the US as a tourist. Looks like hotels and airlines did not bribe Trump sufficiently.

Not yet rotten by algorithmic rot, I think as well. I see quite lovely comment sections and doesn't feel infested with bots.

Could be wrong though, if anyone has any insight please provide!

Tbh the fundamentally fragmented, federated model the fediverse uses as a core design element does seem like it’d be far harder to centralize and comprehensively corrupt.

Definitely agreed with that, which is why I like it so far but am just worried or hold back. Hope there is going to be more activity on the whole system.

2

I see it as a win-win. I only have to open the app for a bit while on the loo. I don't give a damn about hemorrhoids, this is my shitposting time!

Pre-sleep bedtime screentime is now reserved for Balatro (likely equally terrible to social media feed) or light reading (probably miles above those, but pales in comparison to paperback).

2

also less potential for AI slop too, reddit has been infested with so much bot, AI posts.

2

Wish there was far more clarity for any platform to see that. The dead internet theory isn't a wild concept anymore.

I personally know Canadians who are still going back to the Untied States for half the year and I'm confused as to how they're not deeply ashamed. Do they not know? Can they really be that oblivious?

7
lemmy.zip

Their right wing is trying to crib some (not all) notes from Trump, so I'd imagine those Canadians are the ones who think what Trump is doing is fine.

3

Is this 30% down in foreign tourist (like people crossing border with the intention of a tourist visit) or 30% down in tourist industry revenue?

If it's revenue that's huge. Because a lot of tourism is just Americans going to tourist destinations. Though I'm sure some of that drop is coming from Americans also not being able to afford vacations.

If it's 30% down of actual foreign tourist travel that's less than I'd expect too. But still beyond devastating to the tourist industry. Between that and the explosion of online gambling, I know Vegas is hurting so much right now.

Ok so if I have to travel to the US for work, I will now require my employer to give me a burner phone with a burner number.

How will they prove that I have any social media history?

73
floofloofreply
lemmy.ca

It depends on their relationship with the social media companies. There's a good chance companies like Meta have already given the authorities a lot of data on their users. US law enforcement might already know about some of your accounts based on your identity, and then claiming you have none might not work well.

46

Does this hold true if you don't use any meta apps? Or maybe no meta apps except WhatsApp or something which is not a public discourse medium anyway?

Have you heard about 'age verification' to 'protect the children'? You too will be age verified. They will know all your accounts. That's the whole point of age verification. It is to eliminate anonymity.

33

I am well aware of the bullshit that the politicians are using abused kids to push through.

14

Yes, only if you actually use it. But the question was: How will they prove that I have any social media history? the premise being that one can deny the existence of any history while actually using social media. Age verification will make this increasingly difficult and risky. If you use social media and deny it and they can prove you lied about using it, there will be consequences.

4

Every app that asks for my face I either don't sign up or turn on the VPN.

Although the airport takes a face scan now so maybe it's a moot point

1

If you can't prove Social Media history, you don't get in, they arrest you, and deport you without due process to a life sentence in an El Salvador torture prison where you'll never be heard from again.

Just tell your employer you're not going.

28

My employer issues us with a wiped laptop that we can restore from cloud storage over our VPN once we're in-country. Before we return, we back it up and scrub it again. When I go to the US, I always bring a low-functioning burner phone as well.

How will they prove that I have any social media history?

Hard to say what the US government knows, or admits to knowing, about your social media usage. I almost completely stopped using social media a few years ago, except for Lemmy, and overwrote all my posts with lorem ipsum, as well as never having accessed it before that without using a VPN and doing some other obfuscation, so it'd take some effort to associate me with anything but some boring Facebook and LinkedIn updates I maintain so that certain people can still get in touch with me.

accounts for political.news subs have a tendancies to be banned for one reason or another more than other accounts,.

1

Change every so and on to maintain some sense of privacy, it won't work against reddit or th US gov, but at least may avoi that people look too far in my comment history, then I had to deal with a ban... for telling people to move to lemmy

4

to spread out , risk mitigation of reddits tendancies to ban people. i had accounts for certain niches that doesnt want to interact more "controversial" subs. unfortunately this year around reddit filters targeted all accounts at once as potential spam, ban evasion.

4

Lots of mods will dig through your history and ban based on activity in other subs. Having themed accounts helps segment your content. I had separate accounts for hobbies, anything political, and local stuff. I don't want those things linked.

I also deleted accounts every so often to start fresh. Except for the hobby one, that was neutral enough that I let it stay until I completely left Reddit.

3

most of them wouldve been banned already, or become shadowban, if they suddenly became active. reddit now sees inactive accounts and new accounts as potential botting.

We have special cell phones for travel to China and the US. However all travel to those hellholes has to be approved by the CEO and will only be approved of it is absolutely necessary for contract negotiations.

I wish my employer did that. Instead, people go freely back with their company issued phones and notebooks. 🙄 All the security we have as certification requirements is moot when we bring these devices back into our network like it's totally fine.

And I suppose I'll continue my plan of staying the hell away until this administration is long gone

This feels pretty hard to enforce, are they gonna let people self select what they provide or are they perhaps going to give a list of services to give accounts for? The latter would have me looking either like a ghost that disappeared about 7 years ago (for most public social media) or one that disappeared about 3 years ago (if Reddit is included)

What happens to people who don't use social media at all? Are they going to be treated with suspicion?

We're probably going to find out eventually. For instance, I have never once in my life had any manner of account for any traditional social media. Just reddit (not anymore) and here. That's it.

If I'm not mistaken, people who said they don't have any are beeing held for questioning and interrogations, or maybe even denied access. I vaguely remember reading an article about this a while back, so it may not help you as much as you think.

They can (how long can they hold you based on suspicion alone?) and will cause you a lot of trouble if they don't like what you give them.

This is what I've been thinking about. What do they do with people that intentionally avoid social media? Is it simply presumed they're hiding something? To that end, would it make sense to run a 'fake' social media account where they just post and share the most politically neutral/milquetoast memes and commentary just so there's something in their history? I have always disliked the idea that one simply has to interact with social media or else be labeled an outcast/weirdo/suspicious person.

It feels like it comes from the same school of thought that the Internet and/or computers need to be used for everything...i don't like the way society continues moving away from "real" methods of paying bills and handling important personal affairs by replacing the old ways with "better" online alternatives. There are definitely benefits to both approaches, i just don't like when a "paper option" gets eliminated entirely in favor of electronic.

Just having a senior moment over here, please forgive my rambling 👴

What do they do with people that intentionally avoid social media? Is it simply presumed they’re hiding something?

Ding ding ding, now we're finally getting somewhere here.

I'm beginning to believe the point to all this is to, if you'll excuse the cliche, "literally become 1984". They want to normalize the idea of having your every thought and action recorded and monitored across state-surveilled social media platforms.

So if for some reason you take a weekend holiday up in New England and decide to keep that to yourself? Now it's suspicious. What were you doing in Vermont? Meeting up with other communists? Planning a revolution, perhaps? Detained.

2

Well now i wish i didn't ask, lol! That's terrifying! 🫠

Fully agree, though.

1

I've considered making a decoy account on some of these. Just keep it light and talk about sportsball, or discussion about hobbies. Nothing heated with rivalries either, just go team!!! And be very sportsmanlike when the other team wins.

2

I could see them detaining you simply for having linux on your laptop. If they can't navigate around it then you're obviously up to no good. I don't use a display manager and could see them cuffing me simply because you need to login to my machine via TTY and know which WM i'm using.

I've been sending emails to hotel companies and urging them to oppose this. I urge you to contact your congresspeople and also companies in the travel, hospitality and tourism industry and demand they oppose this policy and more broadly ask them to stand up to Trump because he's causing people to rightfully boycott the US.

Also to everyone who is boycotting the US thank you so so much, I'm really grateful and as are so many Americans who also hate what the Trump regime is doing. The more people who boycott the more pressure it will put on companies to finally stand up against the Trump regime.

🤦🏻‍♀️ What about the people who don't use social media? Or have used social media for less than 5 years?

Or people who disclose a suspiciously wholesome 5 years of social media use? Or use social media platforms that allow backdated posts - how well are those going to be scrutinised?

Why am I even asking? This is all so stupid. People only want to travel to places where they won't be immediately grilled on what they think of the dictator. (...Out of curiosity, what's the process like for North Korea? Strictly for comparison.)

15

I'm pretty sure the only posts I've put on Facebook in the past five years are all a version of, "Hey, I'm just checking in so y'all know I'm still alive." I haven't updated my personal information on there in about a decade.
