Lol MAGAts aren't doing what the meme says, they're cheering it on, because ThOSe DaMn DeMoCrAps are finally getting taken care of

182
lemmy.world

I don't see that at all. The only MAGA that I'm still connected to on Facebook hasn't posted anything about the Abrego Garcia situation since it happened. He's literally doing the Homer thing, and the shrubs are his other posts about the weather and stuff. He went from posting about Trump all the time to kinda pretending like he doesn't exist.

Meanwhile, the MAGAts around my parents' house in the middle of rural Indiana have taken down all of their Trump flags. They were already at a low ebb before the election; now there are only two houses with Trump signs up on my route to their house, and I'm pretty sure one of them is owned by an old woman who can't walk.

This just isn't happening on the ground. Only on Fox, as far as I can tell.

My MAGA friend just said due process is only for citizens. I stopped trying to debate with him, he’s too far gone. I’m depressed about it.

25
lemmy.world

Very disappointing. How does he say he's expected to prove that he's a citizen without due process? I've been wondering.

15
Stevereply
startrek.website

Unconditional trust in the MAGA authorities, plus unconditional disdain for all other authorities (trumps convictions are unjust politically motivated prosecution, he did nothing wrong). He turned his brain off years ago and just lets fox news think for him.

13

He doesn't actually have an answer? Even more disappointing.

"What if a socialist demonrat accused you of being a noncitizen? How would you prove them wrong?"

9
someguy3reply

You can ask how do you know he's not a citizen without due process?

7

Couldn’t answer coherently. Comfortably safe as the in group, confident that the others deserve their punishment.

9

If you’re ever forced to have a debate with him, I would love to know about a (actually, an honest) strategy:

Yeah I want him to have a third term too and be as effective as possible, but how will it work if the deep state gets Obama in for a third term and he sends all Republicans to Turkish prisons? Makes me wonder if we listen to the courts whether we can keep the DemonRats/DementedCraps from being their usual fascist selves 🤔

1

I live in a pretty maga area and I can say that maybe the support has dwindled a tiny bit around me? I dunno it's hard to tell. I can tell you for damn sure tho that there are still plenty of people incredibly happy with everything that's going on. Especially with the deportations. It seems a little less with the tariffs but even then a ton of them are very happy that America is finally standing up for itself. I'm pretty convinced at this point that there is literally nothing Trump could do that they would see as a bad thing.

12

That happened to a buddy in Florida before the 2020 election, people took down their signs all over. I noticed it in rural Washington as well. I guess they saw a black woman, got scared, and put them right back up.

My hardcore right wing neighbors have anti-elon stickers all over one of their Teslas, but are still the same. I think Fox has them fearful of "persecution". They highlight every act of vandalism or protest like they're some sort of oppressed minority so that makes them afraid to speak up, or they straight up know their viewpoints are shameful. Either way I think only the margins are changing as the truth never penetrates the core of the believers.

I think politics need to be interesting for people to vote. If the expected outcome is that everything only worsens a bit, you'll never get people to vote for you. So by leaning right, she basically tried to appease the conservatives, but made progressives lose interest. I don't think that anyone (or a substancial number) on the left tried to "own" her.

Democrats lost 6 millions voters in 2024 compared to 2020.

Republicans gained 3 million voters in 2024 compared to 2020.

Third parties stayed the same between 2024 and 2020 at 3 million total voters.

9 million people chose to abstain from voting in 2024 compared to 2020.

Even if you add up the some ~1 million uncommitted voters that voted Green or PSL in 2024, this pails in comparison to the amount of people that either switched parties or didn't vote at all.

Democrats did this to themselves. Kamala ran towards the Republicans instead of rallying to the Democrats' traditional strengths as well as making a coalition with progressives and leftists.

The more you blame Palestinian voters instead of Democratic party leadership, the more you wish for the destruction of all minority rights in this country.

2

To add to what you're saying, the Weimar republic was not a really a democracy when Hitler got in power; it was already ruled by decree, with a reactionary minority (Hindenburg, Papen, Schleicher and al) aiming to ignore parliament and preserve the nobility.

In early 1933 a German observer might have hoped the authoritarian trend was just a temporary thing and the presidential clique would have to bend to the parliament eventually, since they were continually losing support.

The hard truth is that fascists cannot be redeemed or convinced. He was quite popular among a good portion of the German population long after the war. Even into the 1950s a large portion of the population still didn't accept Germany's responsibility for the war. The truth is a lot of the generation that was most affected by the Nazi propaganda, the age bracket that really voted Hitler into power? Most of them never lost those Nazi ideals and kept them right until they died of old age. There's a reason so many works of fiction in the second half of the 20th century feature groups of old Nazis working one evil scheme or another.

He has had a work permit since 2019.

Even if I agreed with the idea of non-reform prisons, there have been zero trials held to prove they were actually criminals. We aren't sending convicted rapists to the desert, we're sending people to a foreign prison, based on nothing but allegations.

I just wanted to make sure you understood that 'Murica can't be used as an example of your ideals, because it sorta sounded like you were trying to say you were in favor of what's going on.

Rehabilitation based prisons are more effective than punitive prisons anyways, so it becomes very difficult to argue that inhumane prisons are good for anything. I'm a victim, and don't believe my rapist should be tortured. If we had such a system, I would probably be even less inclined to report, because I don't think anybody deserves this pain, not even the people who perpetuate it.

3
lemmy.ca

The way this works is they make you feel so afraid of criminals that you want someone cruel in power to protect you from them.

Problem is they need to keep you afraid and keep on being cruel to maintain power. So they will constantly be adding groups of people to the list. The eventual outcome is you may be added to the list and sent to a gulag. But maybe if you're lucky you won't and you merely live in fear that your government will execute it's cruelty on you if you ever speak out.

Living in a system dominated by fear and cruelty isn't how I want to live. Why do you want to live that way?

I'm fine with criminals being held in a prison in my own country and still having human rights no matter what crime they committed because I haven't been made to be afraid of criminals. 6

As I said not really. What I am talking about is semi related

Quick death isn’t the most horrible thing under the sun, pain is pain whether rape or torture but rape leaves holes in the soul that will never heal. It destroys you as a person.

On the outside you may still appear to walk, talk and eat but inside everything is dead, merely a shell remains. It is a death of sorts but without respite of nothingness

All three seem like just words here on the internet but behind all three are incredibly terrible stories that we are not able to truly comprehend.

-7

The problem with the prison system here in the U.S. is that in a majority of states the counties' budget relies on income from maxed out prisons. It's a for-profit system, but there are very few private prisons compared to public prisons. The private prisons are even MORE incentivized to max out their population.

I don't like the idea of non-reform prisons because they don't even give someone a chance to try to recognize what they did was wrong and be able to change themselves in a meaningful way. Not to say that it happens in "reform" prisons here, but it's at least a chance.

The U.S. wouldn't have such a huge prison population if it wasn't essentially for-profit and if the "War on Drugs" didn't happen, among other things.

But the issue right now isn't even what you're talking about. The U.S. is grabbing "illegal immigrants" off the street regardless of immigration status now and sending them to a prison in El Salvador. They are trying to declare all of these people "dead" in the Social Security "Death Master File" which essentially locks these people out of any bank accounts, credit, jobs, etc so they self-deport before being disappeared.

Once they have all "illegal" immigrants out of the country, then they will focus on what Elon Musk calls "parasites": people on disability or any kind of government assistance because these people (including myself) are seen as a drain on the federal government and since Trump can't stop the funding to these agencies he's going through the back door and looking for "fraud" but recognize that "mistakes will be made" thus causing all kinds of problems for legal U.S. citizens.

Then when he's done with them, he'll move on to people who don't identify with the gender they were born as. Technically he's already making their lives hell by doing things like requiring all government documents to show the gender a person was born as, not what they identify as, regardless if any transitions were made or not. For those who have already transitioned they are kinda of in limbo now because their documentation states something that they essentially aren't.

Are you guilty?' said Winston.

'Of course I'm guilty!' cried Parsons with a servile glance at the telescreen. 'You don't think the Party would arrest an innocent man, do you?' His frog-like face grew calmer, and even took on a slightly sanctimonious expression. 'Thoughtcrime is a dreadful thing, old man,' he said sententiously. 'It's insidious. It can get hold of you without your even knowing it. Do you know how it got hold of me? In my sleep! Yes, that's a fact. There I was, working away, trying to do my bit—never knew I had any bad stuff in my mind at all. And then I started talking in my sleep. Do you know what they heard me saying?'

He sank his voice, like someone who is obliged for medical reasons to utter an obscenity.

'"Down with Big Brother!" Yes, I said that! Said it over and over again, it seems. Between you and me, old man, I'm glad they got me before it went any further. Do you know what I'm going to say to them when I go up before the tribunal? "Thank you," I'm going to say, "thank you for saving me before it was too late."'

'Who denounced you?' said Winston.

'It was my little daughter,' said Parsons with a sort of doleful pride. 'She listened at the keyhole. Heard what I was saying, and nipped off to the patrols the very next day. Pretty smart for a nipper of seven, eh? I don't bear her any grudge for it. In fact I'm proud of her. It shows I brought her up in the right spirit, anyway.'
