Not venomous or anything, but definitely not approving, and prone to prejudice. But he was never anything but an idol to her, even with her believing he was gay.
I think for some of those people that deep down dislike gays (or minorities for that matter) but have a friend who falls into one of those groups or are a fan like in this case just tell themselves “but (person) is one of the ‘good ones’”.
