In what possible way is the girl in the picture "ugly"? What the hell do these people want in their games? Supermodels? Porn stars?

What the hell do these people want in their games? Supermodels? Porn stars?

My guess would be they want both of those things. Related ice-cold take on the Horizon series:

lemmy.world

It feels like ppl that post these takes have been watching too much hentai: giant tits that defy gravity, waists with no ribs, attracted to ugly bastards that just exist, etc.

59

I looked at BGrizzy1989's tweets so no one else has to, and hooboy. Pro-Trump, transphobic, anti-woke, fat-shaming. As one might expect, it takes a pretty gross human being to freak out about less-than-supermodel looks on a video game character.

50

Probably the same people that mod those games to make the female character to look like overinflated balloons. I looked for interesting Horizon mods recently and a stupid amount of them were Aloy "enhancements" that defy realism in any way.

pjwestinreply

Based on this image and a similar one I saw...it's makeup. They want female characters to wear makeup. They either don't know that makeup is what makes them, "hot," or they realized that it's stupid for a space outlaw or a robot-apocalypse survivalist to be wearing a full face of makeup, so they have to say they're ugly. Either way, these people don't fuck.

31

LOL, yes, exactly. This is the kind of thing you learn about women when you have a girlfriend for more than a month. I think most of these guys don't realize they're telling on themselves when they complain about these, "ugly," characters.

21
XEALreply

Ehh... third pic happened to me with a coworker a few years ago. I've never commented on or thought much about her make up, but one day she got to work and her lips were much paler than usual, so I asked her if she was ok and she told me she hadn't put on her makeup yet.

-3
lemmy.world

I love that the pic on the right looks uncomfortable. That’s a customer service smile, an “a man told me to smile and I don’t feel like fighting him right now” smile, a “the photographer is really creepy but this is my job” smile

5
lemmy.world

And the one on the left is giving him the "why are you existing in my space" look.

5

Yeah but I figure he didn’t specifically create that character model. His idea of a beautiful woman still looks miserable

1
lemmy.world

The overall view of beauty in women is already heavily skewed in general.

I still remember when that cop got caught fucking half her coworkers and 90% of the comments about it were about how she was mid when she was actually quite pretty.

21
sopuli.xyz

90% of the comments about it were about how she was mid when she was actually quite pretty

I felt similarly. I know people are meaner online than in person. And I have personally known several people who just have ridiculously high beauty standards.

I didn't understand it. As a heterosexual man, most women look good to me.

8

I think it’s like Americans and sugar. So much of our food is sweetened that we have to add extra sugar to our desserts and we think things that have added sugar don’t. Like our bread is too damn sweet. In a society where women are expected to wear makeup, and where most women on tv are gorgeous to the point that beautiful women play “ugly” characters our balance is thrown off. Porn doesn’t help I’m sure, but when it comes to distorting beauty standards, it can’t compare to tv, movies, and influencers. When women groom only enough to be clean it’s treated as strange. It has well known harm for girls and young women and that aspect is spreading to boys and young men. But what we see here is a different form of harm, it’s the loss of taste for what is real and natural, and in the off chance these people find themselves waking up next to a woman they’re in for a bad time.

2
XEALreply

Actually... her face kinda looks like one specific softcore pr0n model.

I mean I saw a picture with the actual model side by side the game character looks ugly af

-9

You mean the game character doesn't have perfect makeup and hair? Almost like she's an outlaw on the run? Isn't that the whole point of the game? Sounds like you think any woman who didn't spend an hour preparing for you ahead of time is "ugly" lol

7

Personally I think the character above is ugly because she looks like she's (We're told it's a she; honestly looks like a 14 year old boy with 70's hair) made out of candle wax.

If they're going for a "realistic" style, they're achieving GameCube era results. If they're going with an "art style" look, they're just outright bad at it, they've splashed down in the river at the bottom of the uncanny valley.

Me? I wouldn't play this game simply because it's got a gigacorporation-owned license. There is going to be no creativity, artistry, or vision behind it, it's this year's bucket of marketably familiar copyrighted stimuli designed to channel wealth from humans to shareholders. Honestly, would anyone be interested in this game if it didn't have the branding and the sound effects library?

-14
lemm.ee

As a male gamer, I never would have played half-life if Gordon Freeman wasn’t so handsome.

60
programming.dev

Who cares about the face? It's the 130$ price tag that's really off-putting.

53

Damage control. The publishers want to put the incels on blast to divert attention away from the price tag backlash.

11
Crikestereply
lemm.ee

It is $70 for the standard edition, quit being disingenuous.

Collectors editions and the like have existed since the inception of video games.

3

70$ for a gimped version of the game. They deliberately took out content (season pass, 2 extra missions, etc.), make you wait an arbitrary amount of days longer to play and are not giving you the stuff that we used to get for free like art books.

Dont fall for their propaganda.

5

You stood in front of their manufactured outrage and now you must pay the price!

3
lemm.ee

To be fair that does look bad, not on a character design level, but because it looks like this character was rendered by a Dreamcast

51

It is a screenshot from a youtube video posted by someone who had an inherent interest in making the character look bad. If you have watched the trailer you will know the picture is not representative of how the character actually looks in game.

6
programming.dev

Which is usualy what pepole are really complaining about . But somehow instead of saying graphics look like shit pepole will complain that main character is ugly, probably beacuse they dont know any better. Its similar case with the little mermaid for example where first and foremost you will see that main character was black but when you watch a professional critic the first thing ypu will see is that the film is extremely dark. Sp dark that its hard to see shit and thats probably a bigger reason why pepole are complaining. Ultimately there is very little complains about race gender or whatewer the fuck is actually controversial at the moment when the movie is good.

-36
Kollireply
sopuli.xyz

As a person who has close relations with racism, this is lie and self-deceit.

16

Agreed, people weren't mad because Aloy wasn't ray-traced heavily enough, they were mad she matched the game's art-style and aesthetic instead of looking like the babe with huge cans from Underage Panty Quest XVII or whatever

7

I disagree. Alghtough it might be country specifc for me. But generaly pepole dont know shit and atrribute bad movies flaw to being 'woke' whereas truth is its quite often the writing or technical issue ( but lets not kid ourselfs. The reason they atrribute race as an issue is actualy because they are racist ).

Tomboy? She's super pretty. Get out of here.

-15

I think might be a discrepancy with the word pretty meaning femininess and tomboy-ness referring to handsomeness.

0

That's the cliche. I didn't make it up. FFS, I don't even believe in gender norms. Play your own character, not mine.

Eh, it happens sometimes. My boss (a woman) referred to a vendor's reps as "those broads" just yesterday, it made me crack up.

7

If I've told them once, I've told them a thousand times... Never call chicks, "broads".

1

Yesterday I was recreating my character for dragon's dogma 2 for new game plus, and I went to YouTube to get some preset characters because it's ng+ and I'm lazy, and there were tons of bimbo generic girls done by a female youtuber, who called them "hot chicks" constantly.

Gamer brain will gamer brain I guess. Anyway, their presets sucked in game, swapped it already lol.

1
lemmy.world

I’m not going to buy it because it’s overpriced, has season passes, and will almost certainly be infected with Denuvo malware… because Ubisoft just has to ruin everything they touch.

The MC looks awesome, though.

45

Don't play the game because it's gonna be some microtransaction bullshit not because you find the mc unattractive.

32
lemmy.ml

I've seen a couple of pics of the character and god damn she is soooooo my type. At that point I'm guessing every women that's doesn't look a 12 years old or have gigantic boobs and some asian baby face are considered ugly by "gamers"? Are all the gamer's mom ugly?

31

Soft butch pan women tend to really do it for me. Not a fetish or anything, just an observation about myself.

10

Right! My first thought was that this character (I know nothing about this game/franchise) is hot as hell.

Nobody is ever going to be everyone's type, so who cares if she's not "hot" to these gamerbros. The writers, artists and devs are focused on making a good character and a good game. It's not like this is a dating sim designed to provide fan service to a wide audience, I'm guessing based on the genre, this character is not there to turn you on, so who cares if she doesn't.

If you can't stand to play a game without a character you find hot in it, That's what cosmetic mods are for.

Let the rest of us have our sexy soft butch women, and our realistic examples of what women look like.

5
sh.itjust.works

Man, the number of times I, a male gamer, have played as an ugly dude...

30

No... He played as the ugly dude because he IS the ugly dude...

What is this woke bullshit. Late 70s/early 80s fashion has no place in star wars.

15
sopuli.xyz

Hot take: Others want games to be superhero stories and others want games to be normal people stories.

No need for conflict as people are different and seeking different things.

14

Yeah but the former is loud, obnoxious and misogynistic about it. Whereas the latter is only heard from to call out the former.

10
iegodreply

My Rocket League character is a normal super hero. The character development is fairly deep.

2
lemmy.world

yall really should be more upset that its an RPG type game in the star wars universe with tons of interesting aliens and races + new unknown main characters.. but no you have to play as a milk toast human again. for a 70$ i expect there to be at least the "human" aliens. for a 130 though it would have to have playable ithorians, hutts, and B'omarr monks

13

New low point... Intimidated by the chick that's actually interesting. Look how ugly shes is when piloting a spaceship and fighting bandits. No one could ever think that's hot, riiiiiight ?

I'd hit that any day over a wimpy bimbo bitch.

12

Wow.... Guess we are lucky PacMan is sexy AF otherwise no one would have played it.

11
fedia.io

Okay, so the hair isn’t doing her any favors, but so fucking what? That’s just personal opinion, and it’s no reason not to buy the game.

9
lemmy.world

I get that's the hype, but honestly, have you ever actually been called a bigot?

3
lemmy.world

This shit gets astoundingly spicy, multiple groups planting extremely firm flags against each other. Somehow an attractive female character is a sign of the culture war. Both having one and not having one, it's honestly very crazy and appears to be mostly a phenomenon on YouTube and Twitter/X.

But yeah, people be throwing every insult in the book at eachother, it was not uncommon to be referred to as a transphobic bigot on the last one of these (Hogwarts legacy). It's not uncommon to get referred to as a misogynistic bigot on this one.

I'm trying not to engage, and if I actually want to play something that's involved in one of these stupid fights (stellar blade now, Hogwarts then, or one of the games on the SBI detected group), I have to hide it on steam. Just cause I'm not sure if I'm gonna have to block one of my friends for being a fucking moron and both groups are rabidly angry at each other. Whether it's legitimate or not, I don't give a fucking shit!

-1
TrickDacyreply
lemmy.world

Yeah it's totally crazy anyone would call jk Rowling a transphobe! /s

3
lemmy.world

JK Rowling is for sure a transphobe, the backlash against that game (sales Numbers showed how many people have a shit about that connection) was stupid.

The arguments were just something you agree with, I just wanted to play the game without engaging in the ridiculous and over the top backlash.

It's all the same shit, someone doesn't want me to play a game cause they have some fucking issue, and I don't care what it is! Big tits, the involvement of story consultants, the writer of the original story went insane, none of those things affect the game for me.

-7
TrickDacyreply
lemmy.world

You gave a transphobe money and you don't care. That's what you just said. Yeah, shocker anyone could get upset about that

2

Yeah see, you are one of those terminally online freaks who actually engage in this fucking nonsense. No one cared, everyone still bought the game, they just agreed with you to not get in an argument.

Same with these freaks against sweet baby Inc, or people against stellar blade because of the model, or some idiot getting mad the main character has a natural bone structure.

This shit only plays on these spaces, including Twitter and YouTube.

Edit: in fact, I have a fun challenge for you. Now that most of the backlash has ended, ask howvl ever many of your friends have a steam account, who bought and hid it. You can hide them on steam, ask and see how many tell you the truth, I bet it won't be only 1!

-6

Yeah every game I don't buy screams "bigot!" As I scroll by it on steam... and the doctor says I need meds! Pfft

-1

That is one of the most idiotic reasons not to play a game.

9
lemmy.world

Less concerned with how the character looks than I am the email Ubi sent me making it look like a live service game.

Dunno if it is or is not, but if it is, I'm out.

7

Looking at a quick gameplay video, it doesn't look like one.

But then Ubisoft have done this bullshit since about AC Unity where they have a single player game, with maybe half a dozen multiplayer missions in it, advertises to both single player and multiplayer enjoyers, and manages to appeal to neither group.

There was one in FC6 you could do solo, and right near the end my PS5 disconnected from the internet and reset all my progress, so I never touched that fucking bullshit ever again. Shame, because it was an interesting dinosaur theme park level that wasn't present in the main game.

5

The ugly part is the price for the special editions. I'm sure there's going to be some ugly surprises post launch. I'll wait a few months and see what it's like then.

3
lemm.ee

Simps will always run the show with regards to gaming. It’s the only thing they feel they have control over. So when a game doesn’t have a 15 year old waifu with double D’s, it’s instantly trashed.

2
lemmy.world

Except they don't have any control over it and just whine loudly. At this point, it wouldn't surprise me if a game becomes popular because the makers push back against these losers.

1

They have enough control to cause a lot of developers to either not have women protagonists at all, or to make them supermodels just to cater to the neckbeards.

We’ve only just now gotten to the point where gender is becoming irrelevant in games. We’re decades away from the simps allowing normal looking female protagonists in “their” games without protesting/boycotting.
