Meet Potential Language

Reply in thread

I think there are programming paradigms that haven't even been discovered yet. Rock music was "discovered" centuries after baroque music, and composers back then would have thought baroque music is the ultimate musical genre, which could not have been improved upon.

I've been working on a programming language recently that sort of programs itself. It's hard to explain how it works, since I approached it from a mathematical direction, but for a domain and range defined with a set of correct input-output pairs, there are an infinite number of functions which correctly maps one input to its corresponding output. If we define f_1 as all functions which correctly map the first IO pair, f_2 as functions which correctly map the second IO pair... Etc etc until we reach f_N, then the set intersection of all f_1...f_N is the set off all functions which satisfy our requirements. From this set of known correct functions, we can sort them by speed or some other trait.

But the devil's in the details there. I won't go into how I get f_1...f_N, but I'm having fun thinking about it & designing it. It may even be useful some day.

Child labour with 10 years of experience, 'AI-native' accepting 250k lines of Cursor code

From my experience, being "good" at vibe coding is more about being unable to detect flaws in AI generated code rather than being able to code well. Add AI to the workflow of someone who actually understands scalability and maintenance and that won't be able to get past a couple functions before they drop the AI.

Also, assuming this kid gets weekends off, he would be writing 12k lines of code each day. I don't think the average programmer could even review that number of lines in a day, so there's likely no actual supervision for what the kid is feeding into the codebase.

I'd estimate within four months the project will be impenetrable, and they'll scrap the whole thing.

If AI can now speak Italian, it can certainly replace us...

This might be happening because of the 'elegant' (incredibly hacky) way openai encodes multiple languages into their models. Instead of using all character sets, they use a modulo operator on each character, to make all Unicode characters represented by a small range of values. On the back end, it somehow detects which language is being spoken, and uses that character set for the response. Seeing as the last line seems to be the same mathematical expression as what you asked, my guess is that your equation just happened to perfectly match some sentence that would make sense in the weird language.

doge.gov got hacked

Oh boy, can't wait for DOGE to receive all the private info the government stores about me! I'm sure that hiring kids with no experience to program every single automatizable aspect of the government will turn out just fine! 🫠

Falamshar the Kalashtar

"Yes, okay, my name is... kllllaaaarrrrrg... i-ifer. Klargifer Caltrop."

"Klargifer is a strange name for a halfling."

"Yuh- yeah. Yeeesss. I suppose it is. That's why I hate my parents."

"Yeah? And what are their names?"

[Suddenly, a wizard or something appears and casts silence on everyone. So you can't ask that the question anymore]

I am the Rust programmer, I will rewrite everything in Rust.

Rust is the WORST programming "language."

  1. it is against the natural order for a PROGRAM to tell the PROGRAMMER how to fix an error. Fixes should ONLY come from PROPHETIC DREAMS.
  2. obfuscation should be done for FUN by PROGRAMMERS to SCARE python programmers. It should NOT be a MANDATORY feature of a language.
  3. Memory leaks are a GIFT given to us by GOD. Programmers will ALWAYS PRAY TO GOD for SOLUTIONS as long as there are MEMORY LEAKS.

Neurotypicals clearly have ESP

90% of social interaction is basically guessing what the other person wants to hear. Being 'good' at socializing is more about performance than actual substance. Small talk is the perfect example, you say a lot of words to say nothing in particular.

I’m autistic and non-speaking. Here’s what I want you to know

Supported typing/facilitated communication is widely regarded as a pseudoscience. Studies have shown that FC is unable to produce answers not known by the facilitator. FC proponents believe that autistic individuals have the same linguistic ability as neurotypical individuals, and difficulty speaking is merely a motor issue.

As someone with autism, I can tell you: my brain can barely keep up with conversation. It's not a motor issue. I have to actively think about appropriate word choice, how to structure sentences correctly, and neurotypicals don't. If I don't take enough time to finish the sentence in my head, the intonation is wrong, I'll skip words, put them out of order, and just generally be unintelligible.

FC, like many other 'theories' surrounding autism, are made by people who have put years into researching autism, but have never thought to ask an autistic person anything about their experience.

Anon does well in school

What's important to note is that there has been a big shift in the goals and techniques of education. This most famously occured with "common core" math in the US. It was a push to teach math in a more intuitive way, one that directly corresponds with what children already know. You can physically add things together by putting more of them together, and then counting them, so they try to teach addition with that analog in mind.

Prior to common core math, there was "new math," which anyone under 80 years old assumes has always been the standard. New math was a push to teach math in a more understandable way, one that gradually introduced new concepts to ensure children understood how math works. This was satirized by Tom Leher in his song "New Math." If you look up the song, you'll see that new math mostly was implemented by teaching students how base-10 positional notation works, and then using that understanding to present addition and subtraction as logical algorithms.

Prior to new math, the focus of math education was much more about getting the right answer, rather than the skills needed for problem solving using math. This allows for a higher breadth of education, as topics can be covered quickly, but each topic is understood in a shallow way.

T-Rex problems

People keep answering this in the most boring way. Here's a slightly less boring answer:

Wait for nightfall

Sneak up to the dino

Stab it in the eye

Run into hut

The T-Rex won't be able to remove the knife, so it will become infected and eventually kill it.

So, Neuralink got FDA approval for human trials, and a certain fanbase is VERY excited about that

The big issue I have with brain chips is longevity. How long until the electrodes degrade? When will the chips fail? Once they fail, will it be fail safe or fail deadly? Also, what will be the power source? Will it use inductive power, or battery power? They are both awful options. What if the chip overheats? The implementation is the real question here, but neuralink refuse to give any answers because it proprietary.

The Man of MATA pt1

It's interesting to see how propagandized the story is, according to the penguin & pufferfish. (I forget if they even have names) Apparently, they were apathetic cannibals who only left their bunker so they could eat more people and fuck up the world.

My best guess of the actual situation would be the mata inheritors were narcissistic and thought they would be the saviors of the destroyed world, quietly steamrolling all of the other survivors in their attempt to 'rebuild civilization' and essentially colonize the apocalypse.

Penguin & pufferfish, likely being descendants of the unmata survivors, inherited the original survivors' perspective on the events.

Loading like a 90's dell computer

This happens to everyone. It happens because your brain registers the other person saying something before it actually understands what is being said. And when most people don't know what someone said, they ask, "what?" without even thinking. Source: my intro to psych textbook.

Try one in your world today

Periapt of health: this is a small vial with a red liquid inside attached to a small chain. While wearing this, all diseases that you would otherwise contract enter the small vial instead. If the vial is broken, the closest creature will immediately contract all diseases contained within.

Deck of many things (used): the previous owners of this deck got all that they could have wished for. The remaining cards might not be the best.

Ring of mind shielding: the creator of this ring was a bit over-zealous. Along with the usual effects, this ring will censor violence, sex, and other uncouth things.

Cloak of the bat: along with the usual effects, wearing this cloak will also make you speak bat. You will only be able to produce high-pitched squeaks.

Portable hole: this portable hole is bottomless! Anything that falls down the hole is lost forever.
